The first of a trilogy of films dealing with contemporary French society concerns how the wife of a composer deals with the death of her husband and child. Nominated for 3 Golden Globes. 98 mins. November 29 “Whale Rider” (New Zealand) 2002. Director: Niki Caro. Drama. Stars: Keisha Castle-Hughes, Rawiri Paratene. A contemporary story of love, rejection & triumph as a young Maori girl fights to fulfil a destiny her grandfather refuses to recognise. Oscar nomination. (Member ‘s suggestion). 101 mins. December 13 “The Artist” (France) B&W. 2011. Director: Michael Hazanavicius. Silent Comedy/Drama Stars: Jean Dujardin, Berenice Bejo. A silent movie star meets a young dancer, but the arrival of talking pictures sends their careers in opposite directions. 5 Oscars.
