Barcelos Barcelos is a small town in known for its pottery and the most widely-recognized symbol of Portugal, the Barcelos Cockerel. A 13th-century legend says a pilgrim en route to Santiago de Compostela stopped in Barcelos and was wrongly accused of theft and sentenced to death by hanging. He was spared when he stated that to prove his innocence, the roasted rooster that the judge was about to eat would get up and crow. It did, and since then, brightly painted ceramic cockerels are sold throughout Portugal as symbols of good luck. The main reason to visit Barcelos is for the largest weekly market in Portugal (and one of the largest in Europe) on Thursday mornings, in Campo da República. It is a vast square with a Renaissance fountain, where almost anything is for sale, including traditional ceramics, rugs, clothes, vegetables, fruit, cheese, fresh bread and cakes.

Braga Capital of the Braga District in northwest Portugal, Braga is the oldest Portuguese city and one of the oldest Christian cities in the world. Founded by a Celtic tribe called Bracari and later occupied by the Romans, Braga became the seat of a large archbishopric and the country's religious capital in the 11th century. It is also one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, with a number of impressive Baroque monuments, including one of the country's best-known sights, the Bom Jesus Sanctuary. Cascais Cascais is a coastal town, 30 kilometers west of Lisbon, Portugal. This formerly quaint fishing village became a popular resort favored by European nobility and kings in the early 20th century. It has the ruins of a castle, an art and sea museum, as well as parks and the charming cobbled streets of the historic center. Just outside the town is the famous Boca do Inferno in which the rough sea often hammers into the rock and creates a booming noise and a spectacular spray, thus creating its name which translates to "mouth of hell".

Coimbra Coimbra served as Portugal's capital during the First Dynasty (12th Century) and remains home to the University of Coimbra, the oldest academic institution in the Portuguese-speaking world and one of the oldest in Europe. The city contains important archeological remains of structures dating from the time when it was the Roman town of Aeminium. In the Late Middle-Ages, declining as the political center of the Kingdom of Portugal, Coimbra began to evolve into a major cultural center with the foundation of the University of Coimbra in 1290. Today this impressive university is still one of the world's most illustrious and the city's biggest attraction. Lisbon Lisbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal. Perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon is one of the rare Western European cities that faces the ocean and uses water as an element that defines the city. Lisbon enchants travelers with its white bleached limestone buildings, intimate alleyways, and an easy going charm that makes it a popular year round destination. Nazaré Today, Nazaré is Portugal's most famous fishing village, having always drawn visitors to its beach and truly colorful life. Many locals still wear their characteristic traditional costumes -- the fishermen have check shirts and trousers, and the women wear several layers of petticoats. Located on the Atlantic coast, Nazaré's long sandy beaches are considered by some to be among the best beaches of Portugal and are very popular with tourists in the summer. The town consists of three sections: A Praia, along the beach; O Sítio, an old town atop a cliff; and Pederneira, an old hilltop town.

Óbidos What makes Óbidos one of Europe's most romantic medieval villages are its incredibly picturesque cobblestone streets lined with colorful houses filled with geraniums and bougainvillea, Gothic doorways and windows, whitewashed churches, flowerpots and dazzling tiles, all encircled within the walls of a 12th century castle. The best way to admire this picture-perfect panorama is by scaling the city's 13m- high medieval walls.

Porto Porto, also Oporto in English, is Portugal's second largest city and capital of the Norte region. The city was built along the hills overlooking the Douro river estuary, and its historical center was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1996. Among the architectural highlights of the city, Oporto Cathedral is the oldest surviving structure, together with the small Romanesque Church of Cedofeita, the gothic Igreja de São Francisco, the remnants of the city walls and a few 15th-century houses.
