  • Estimating Employer Labour-Market Power and Its Wage Effects
    Making their own weather? Estimating employer labour-market power and its wage effects∗ Pedro S. Martinsy Queen Mary University of London & NovaSBE & IZA & GLO December 30, 2019 Abstract The subdued wage growth observed over the last years in many countries has spurred renewed interest in monopsony views of the labour market. This paper is one of the first to measure the extent and robustness of employer labour-market power and its wage implications exploiting comprehensive matched employer-employee data. We find average (employment-weighted) Herfindhal indices of 800 to 1,100; and that less than 9% of workers are exposed to concentration levels thought to raise market power concerns. However, these figures can increase significantly with different methodological choices. Finally, when controlling for both worker and firm heterogeneity and instrumenting for concentration, wages are found to be negatively affected by employer concentration, with elasticities of around -1.5%. To date, there are 19 species (plus one form) of zodariid spiders known from Portugal. Key words: Amphiledorus, Zodarion, description, faunistics, distribution, Azores, Iberian Introduction With more than 750 species described so far, the family Zodariidae Thorell 1881 is one of the fifteen most species rich spider families. Representatives of this family are distributed over all continents, except Antarctica. Only four genera, Amphiledorus Jocqué & Bosmans 2001, Palaestina O. P.-Cambridge 1872, Selamia Simon 1873 and Zodarion Walckenaer 1826, with about 80 species occur in Europe. One third of these species is restricted to the Iberian Peninsula (Platnick 2005).

    Forest fire emissions under climate change: an air quality perspective Carvalho, A., Martins, V., Miranda, A.I. and Borrego, C. 1 Abstract The effects of forest fires emissions are felt at different levels: from the contribution to the greenhouse effect to the occurrence of local atmospheric pollution episodes. In a changing climatic scenario forest fires can become an even larger source of air pollutants to the atmosphere. A statistical analysis was made in order to establish the relationship between forest fires occurrences in Portugal, area burned and air pollutants concentrations in the atmosphere. Historical datasets of area burned, number of fires and ozone maximum concentrations and particulate matter daily average concentrations were evaluated from 1995 to 2005. Significant Spearman correlation coefficients were obtained between ozone maximum concentrations and particulate matter daily average concentrations and area burned and number of fires, at district level, over Portugal. The ozone maximum concentrations are highly correlated to the area burned and number of fires reaching 0.70 and 0.72, respectively, at Porto district. Area burned projections for the SRES-A2 climate scenario suggest substantial increases in several Portuguese districts leading to considerable amounts of pollutants released to the atmosphere. Forest fire emissions register substantial increases mainly in the North and Centre districts due to increases on area burned. CO 2 equivalent emissions point to a considerable contribution of these emissions to greenhouse effect. Introduction Each summer season wildland forest fires burn a considerable area of south European landscape, due to persistent extreme fire conditions, particularly critical in Portugal, where the area burned and number of fires in the last 26 years (1980-2005) was 461 685 ha and 2 714 574, respectively (EC, 2006).

There would be so much to debate about those concepts, so often criticized for having led to the entrapment of entire peoples in geographic territories, holders ofa unique and an immutable identity. Stereotypes were thus created about these people, far from their social and cultural reality. In opposition, we intend to think about the Leiriaregion as a symbolic space in permanent identity construction, seeking its affirmation in Portugal and in the globalized world. This fact, together with the unquestionable democratic value associated with the act of voting, leads to the discussion of the issue and emphasizes the need for additional investigation concerning the portuguese context. Particularly, it is crucial to identify the characteristics of citizens who vote, to better understand the phenomenon and think about solutions. This work aims to identify the most significant sociodemographic variables in explaining voter turnout in continental Portugal and describe the relationship between those variables and voter turnout, including the geographical variation existing across the municipalities. Data related to sociodemographic variables are provided from population census 2011, and turnout results concerns the legislative election of the same year.

Easier said than done…. but after digging and delving through old family papers, books, letters, documents, and speaking to family members, I was astonished about the amount of interesting information I managed to gather ! I have always loved History, but when it comes to studying your own family history it’s even more exciting! Below I attempt to write a résumé of George Croft’s life and memories By Ana Croft de Moura Possolo George Croft 37 I will begin to explain a little about the family history and then talk about his role in Portuguese Society of the 19thcentury. George Croft was born in Manchester on the 15th of May 1808, and died in Lisbon on the 26th January 1874. He is buried in the British Cemetery in Lisbon. His parents were Thomas Croft Esq. and Sarah Simpson. George had a brother, Frederick, and a sister, Sarah. George Croft was married at St. George’s Church in Lisbon on the 21st June 1834. According to St. George’s church records of the time, they state that his brother Frederick Croft and cousin William Croft were witnesses to this marriage. He married a Portuguese lady, Maria Luciana de Oliveira, daughter of the Barão de Barcelinhos, ( Manuel José de Oliveira and his wife Luciana Maria de Oliveira, owners of the Palácio de Barcelinhos, previously the Convento do Espirito Santo da Pedreira in the Chiado, in Lisbon.).
