1. We do a lot! I have been very impressed by the vitality and variety of the programs that Menu: our synagogue provides. Using the online form or you can contact the office at As is true in any community, there are things we [email protected] - 407.647.3055 could do better. Communication is fundamental to the health and well-being of this kehillah. We can and must do a better of job of getting the word out to our members and the greater community as well. And communication, to be effective, must be a two-way street. We must strive to be clear, consistent and timely with our message, both from the leadership and from congregants. If you have an idea – share it! If you see a program you want to attend, invite others who may share your interests. I look forward to continuing to be a part of our synagogue and thank you for the opportunity to be a part of the staff this past year.

Why do we eat dairy foods on Shavuot? There are many explanations for why we eat dairy foods on Shavuot. Here a few adapted from “The Jewish Book of Why” by Rabbi Alfred J. Kolatch: 1. Words of Torah are sweet – “honey and milk under your tongue” (Song of Songs 4:11) 2. From Exodus 23:19 – “The choicest first-fruits shall you bring to the House of the Lord. You shall not cook a kid in its mother’s milk”. The first- fruits refers to Shavuot. The second sentence of this verse then cautions about milk and meat – therefore tradition has it that a dairy meal should be consumed first. 3. According to legend, when the Israelites returned from receiving Torah there was no time to prepare a meat meal (slaughtering and preparing meat takes a longer time), therefore they ate a dairy meal.

However, I also have an idea – everyone deserves an excuse to eat cheesecake!

GERMANS TO WELCOME ORLANDO TORAH SCROLL

WHERE ITS PERISHED CONGREGANTS ONCE USED IT - written by Arlene van de Rijn Berkach Village Synagogue At the end of this month, a delegation of members from Temple Israel will accompany Temple Israel’s “Goold Torah” to Berkach, Germany, for the 160th anniversary of the opening of the building which housed the then-newly- built Berkacher Synagogue (1854). This Torah had been written especially for the synagogue’s opening by Hirsch Hessberg, an ancestor of Lothar Goldschmidt who eventu- ally saved the Torah from destruction by bringing it to Tem- ple Israel after fleeing the Nazis. Thus, the scroll will be welcomed back to the place where it was used for decades and where its people had to either flee, face deportation, or were murdered. The presence of the historical Berkacher Torah Scroll at the 160th Jubilee of the inauguration of the synagogue was via invitation by event sponsors to lend the Torah to be part of this commemoration on June 1. Bringing the Torah into the synagogue building should provide an especially meaningful moment. The highlight of the jubilee will be the reading from the Berkacher Torah Scroll during the memorial ceremony. In 2010, Temple Israel had the Goold Torah restored by sponsoring a months-long Torah restoration project. It is used regularly during Temple Israel’s religious services. The initial inauguration of the synagogue was on the beginning date of the festival of Shavuot. This memorial event nearly coincides with the beginning of Shavuot in this year of 5774. Thus, the 19th century dedication of the synagogue and the 160th jubilee are closely bound to the central theme of Jewish belief in the profound gift of the Torah. Singh Khalsa, a member of the Jewish community in Thuringen and one of the organizers of this event says, “Our local association has made it our purpose to stimu- L to R, Daniel Wise, Harry Rein & Rhea Rein late a revival of Jewish social, cultural and religious ac- with the Goold Torah. tivities in remembrance of the 19th century atmosphere and conditions of Jewish life in the village. This is our appeal to the International Jewish Community for assis- tance and participation in increasing awareness for the reinstating of the quality of Jewish life in the village of Berkach.” Those who will be personally delivering the Goold Torah to the Berkach Village Synagogue building are Harry & Rhea Rein, Daniel & Lori Pearson-Wise, Sylvie Wise and Richard Crane. This year marks the 60th anni- versary of Temple Israel, another aspect to this event and a special feature to those making the trip.

If you would like more information about the Goold Torah, please contact the Temple Israel office at 407.647.3055 or [email protected].

Sisterhood and Women’s League is all about building relationships and this is done through working together towards common goals. It has been my pleasure to serve as your President for the past year and I am glad to continue on for the upcoming fiscal year which is July 1 to June 30. The complete slate for the next year is as follows:

President Cathy Swerdlow VP – Programming Mollie Savage VP – Education Nancy Stern VP – Fundraising Sheri Denberg VP – Membership Nicki D’Amato & Patty Rose Recording Secretary Fanny Sernik Corr. Secretary Sandy Oser Treasurer Roberta Schreiber Immediate Past President Valerie Kahn

Voting on the slate will take place at the congregational Town Hall meeting on Sunday, June 1st. Please be sure to attend this important synagogue meeting. The Sisterhood Board is re-instituting our Woman of the Year program after a 9 year hiatus. Previous honorees include Lee Sami, Laurie Feenburg, Val Kahn & Robin Reilly. We are using the same system of nominations that is used for the Simchat Torah honorees for the synagogue. Please send me your nomination of a deserving Sisterhood member. You can email it or give me a call (407.862.2374). Nominations should be received by June 1st. June 8th is our annual Installation of Officers. This year our luncheon will be held in our beautiful newly renovated Roth Social Hall with Catering by TinaMarie. There will be fabulous entertainment, raffle drawings and acknowledgement of our Woman of the Year. Our Mitzvah project for the luncheon is in support of Community Based Care of Central Florida, a local organization that assists teens and young adults who have “aged out” of foster care and are unable to afford many of the necessities to live on their own. Keri Flynn, Community Relations Manager, will be our guest. Please bring gift cards, such as to Wal-Mart or Target, or a general gift card such as AMEX or VISA. Any amount is greatly appreciated! Please make sure the amount of the card is clearly indicated on the card or its folder.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the Luncheon!

Cemetery update

Dear Congregants, The Cemetery Committee wanted to take this time to provide you with the latest improvements either completed or scheduled for completion. An upgraded electronic board to help locate grave sites is set for installation. The upgrade will also include a light- ning protection device. This is the first improvement made since its installation some five years ago. With the un- predictable weather and lightning storms, the system required major improvements. Behind the caretaker’s home, in Section 10, the weeds are gone and new sod has been installed. Under the excellent supervision of Laurence Morrell, we are constantly striving to green up the entire cemetery, remove the many mounds of ant beds and address the ever present need for weed control. A new and lighter lawn mower was pur- chased which should help in our beautification program and remove the ruts caused by a heavy piece of lawn mow- ing equipment. Several of our dedicated benches have been re-set and moved due to ground shifting and expanding tree roots. Recently a congregant purchased two mausoleums in our soon to be Temple Israel Mausoleum Park. These should be completed and the area landscaped by July 1st. In March, a scout earned his Eagle Badge by hand cleaning our bronze markers. His name is Samuel Charles and his Troop Master is Mark Kluger. In closing, I have saved the best for last. Permanent seating has been ordered for the Yank Frank Chapel. This will be a wonderful addition and will enhance the beauty of the chapel. I am most grateful for Julian Meitin chairing this program. The seating should be completed prior to the High Holidays. Your committee welcomes your attendance at our quarterly meetings and we are always interested in knowing how we can address congregant concerns. As of March 17, 2014, we now have a permanent office located at 235 Maitland Avenue. Bernie and Roz Weinstein were most gracious in providing us an office with a separate door and tremendous facilities. Thank you to the Tem- ple for loaning us several unused chairs for our new home. If you happen to run into Max Mogul, please thank him for all the years he extended courtesies to Temple Israel Cemetery. Temple Israel is fortunate to have such a hard working board and for that I say, “Thank You.”

Temple Israel’s Keepers of the Flame Not surprisingly, our membership dues do not cover Temple Israel’s expenses and without generous dona- tions we would be unable to fulfill our mission of building a sacred community. Thus our basic dues represent a member’s minimum financial commitment. Recognizing that there are many members who have the ability and the desire to provide greater support in addition to their basic dues, Temple Israel created a membership category called Keepers of the Flame to provide a mechanism for this increased level of giving. The generosity of our current and future Keepers is vital to the sustainability and growth of Temple Israel.

In appreciation of this increased dues level of commitment, Keepers of the Flame are welcome at all Temple Israel sponsored Shabbat dinners, synagogue Seders and program events without additional charge. Only a reservation is required. Additionally, there is a designated “Keepers of the Flame” seating area at all of the High Holiday services.

The following giving levels are suggested:

 Benefactors $15,000 and up  Pillars $10,000 to $14,999  Defenders $7,800 to $9,999  Guardians $5,300 to $7,799  Protectors $3,300 to $5,299  Preservers $2,400 to $3,299  Kindlers $2,000 to $2,399

If you would like to be counted among our Keepers of the Flame, please send your giving level to:

Temple Israel 50 S. Moss Rd., Winter Springs, FL 32708-3002
