Hintzen, Chair My dissertation examines entanglements of race, place, gender, and class in Puerto Rican reggaetón. Based on ethnographic and archival research in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and in New York, New York, I argue that Puerto Rican youth engage with an African diasporic space via their participation in the popular music reggaetón. By African diasporic space, I refer to the process by which local groups incorporate diasporic resources such as cultural practices or icons from other sites in the African diaspora into new expressions of blackness that respond to their localized experiences of racial exclusion. Participation in African diasporic space not only facilitates cultural exchange across different African diasporic sites, but it also exposes local communities in these sites to new understandings and expressions of blackness from other places. As one manifestation of these processes in Puerto Rico, reggaetón refutes the hegemonic construction of Puerto Rican national identity as a “racial democracy.” Similar to countries such as Brazil and Cuba, the discourse of racial democracy in Puerto Rico posits that Puerto Ricans are descendents of European, African, and indigenous ancestors. -

I stumble and have to think before answer- ing. That’s not because I have a bad memory. I’m just not sure what counts as Latin America. Outside of my predominantly Dominican neighborhood on Manhat- tan’s Upper West Side, the first Latin American “country” I ever visited was Puerto Rico. I went to a Casals Festival there in February 1967, enjoying the tropical sun and melodious classical music. But Puerto Rico’s not precisely a country. And it’s not a state either. The ambivalent nature of its status mingled with my perception at that time that Puerto Rico was entirely too gringo. While my Dominican neighbors were insist- ing on selling milk to me at the bodega in Spanish, my tourist experience and San Juan’s high-rise buildings gave me the impression that Puerto Rico was very American in the U.S. sense of the word. The people were wonderful and the music was great, and I fell in love with the taste of piononos, but all in all, I came away feeling that Puerto Rico was Latin Lite. Flash forward many, many years to my second and third trips to Puerto Rico, both of them for international confer- ences in the 1990s. I’d lived and worked for more than 14 years in Latin America by then, and Spanish was very much second nature. -

A Brief history of the Afro-Borincano By Tony (The Marine) Santiago Black history in Puerto Rico initially began with the African freeman who arrived with the Spanish Conquistadors. The Spaniards enslaved the Tainos who were the native inhabitants of the island and many of them died as a result of the cruel treatment that they had received. This presented a problem for the Spanish Crown since they depended on slavery as a means of manpower to work the mines and build forts. Their solution was to import slaves from Africa and as a consequence the vast majority of the Africans who immigrated to Puerto Rico did so as a result of the slave trade. The Africans in Puerto Rico came from various points of Africa, suffered many hardships and were subject to cruel treatment. When the gold mines were declared depleted and no longer produced the precious metal, the Spanish Crown ignored Puerto Rico and the island became mainly a garrison for the ships. Africans from British and French possessions in the Caribbean were encouraged to immigrate to Puerto Rico and as freemen provided a population base to support the Puerto Rican garrison and its forts. The Spanish decree of 1789 allowed the slaves to earn or buy their freedom. However, this did little to help them in their situation and eventually many slaves rebelled, most notably in the revolt against Spanish rule known as the "Grito de Lares“. On March 22, 1873, slavery was finally abolished in Puerto Rico. The Africans that came to Puerto Rico overcame many obstacles and particularly after the Spanish- American War, their descendents helped shape the political institutions of the island. -

Professor Herndndez demonstrates the ways in which the U.S. race ideology is slowly startingto resemble the race ideology of much of Latin America. The evolving U.S. race ideology is a multiracial matrix made up offour precepts: (1) racial mixture and diverse racial de- mography will resolve racialproblems; (2)fluid racial classificationschemes are an indicatorof racialprogress and the colorblind abolition of racial clas- sfications an indicator of absolute racial harmony; (3) racism is solely a phenomenon of aberrantracist individuals;and (4)focusing on race is itself racist. -

Introduction The impact of race on economic outcomes is a topic that has received enormous attention among labor economists over the years. In the United States, hundreds of studies have examined the divergent economic opportunities on the basis of race and the mechanisms through which race affects earnings, employment, etc. [see the surveys by Cain (1986) and Altonji and Blank (1999)]. Similarly, there is a growing body of work on the connections between race and economic outcomes in Latin America, including research on Mexico, Bolivia, Brazil, and many others [Psacharopoulos and Patrinos (1994), Lovell and Wood (1998), Lam (1999), Patrinos (2000), Florez and Medina (2001), and Oakley (2002)]. By contrast, there has been very little analysis of how race and racial discrimination affect income and labor market performance in the Caribbean. -

Acknowledgements President Barack Obama once said, “if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own.” I believe this wholeheartedly. I know that I worked hard to become the first person in my family to go to college and earn a PhD. However, I recognize that many other people believed in me and have been invested in my success. Without them, I would not have reached this milestone or the many smaller ones that came before it. I am so fortunate to have cultivated a community that uplifts me. First, I would like to thank my family who have cheered me on in this process. I’m not sure they always understood what graduate school entails but they watched my Youtube video on Afro-Puerto Rican socialists and sent me good luck texts for every job interview. I am lucky to be the oldest of seven, and I have no doubt everything that comes with being the eldest—assertiveness and multitasking, for instance—have been assets in my career.
