THE STUDY AREA - 84,935 acres The Clover Mountains WSA (NV-050-139) is located in southern Lincoln County, Nevada, approximately twelve miles south of Caliente, Nevada, in the western Clover Mountains. The WSA contains 84,935 acres of BLM land with no split estate lands or private inholdings. Along the southwest side, from the intersection of Pennsylvania Canyon and Meadow Valley Wash southerly, the boundary is formed by the Union Pacific Railroad tracks or the adjoining access road, whichever is more easterly, except for a tract of private land. At the private land, the boundary is formed by a combination of the private land and the access road. The southern boundary is formed by extending a line easterly from the midline of Section 3, T.8S., R.67E., approximately along a ridgeline, to the approximate center of Section 4, T.8S., R.68E., at map elevation 4,671'. From there the line extends southeasterly, point to point, to the northern slopes of Garden Mountain, thence northerly and easterly across the lower slopes of the Clover Mountains, point to point, to a point about one mile north of Sam's Camp Well. -

Affected Environment/Impacts of MSHCP & Alternatives Chapter 4 Affected Environment and Impacts of MSHCP and Alternatives 4.1 Setting Clark County is located in the southernmost tip of Nevada, as shown in Figure 4-1. It is bordered on the north by Lincoln County, Nevada; on the east by Mojave County, Arizona; on the southwest by San Bernardino and Inyo Counties, California; and on the west by Nye County, Nevada. It covers approximately 7,880 square miles, or about 7 percent of the state’s total area. It is Nevada’s most populated county, with an estimated 1997 population of 1,170,113, or about 67 percent of the state total (Clark County Department of Comprehensive Planning 1997). Elevations within Clark County range from 450 feet above mean sea level along the Colorado River to 11,918 feet at Charleston Peak (see Figure 4-1). Much of the county has features that are characteristic of the Great Basin, such as mountain ranges that extend in a north-south direction and erode laterally to long, narrow desert valleys. The mountain ranges are generally steep and composed primarily of bedrock. Wide alluvial fans or aprons extend from the base of the mountains and level out to basin lowlands. The basin lowlands have been continually filling since the mountains were originally formed and have a surface generally composed of fine sand, silt, and clay. The Las Vegas Valley extends in a northwest-southeast direction with the Spring Mountains to the west; the Pintwater, Desert, Sheep, and Las Vegas Mountains to the north; Frenchman Mountain to the east; and the Bird Spring and McCullough mountain ranges to the south. -

D., Dean, Graduate School August, 2013 i Abstract A new zone was created for the SIMulating Patterns and Processes at Landscape scaLEs (SIMPPLLE) model for vegetation simulations in the hydrologic Great Basin. Current parameterization is designed to use LANDFIRE data as input. Three separate mountain areas were considered for this study: the Clover Mtns., the Sheep Range, and the Snake Range. Fire histories for each area were based on an eleven year period (1986-1996), and were acquired from the National Fire Occurrence database. Ten-year calibration simulations were performed for each mountain area using 1999 vegetation data to initialize the run. Vegetation data from 2008 was used to assess the simulated end states. Model pathways were adapted to the Great Basin ecosystems, successional stages, disturbance processes, and ecoclimatic features. The model performed well at predicting vegetation type, but was inconsistent predicting canopy cover density and canopy height. -

278 Vol. 61 NOTES ON THE OCCURRENCE OF BIRDS IN SOUTHERN NEVADA By GORDON W. GULLION, WARREN M. PULICH, and FRED G. EVENDEN Southern Nevada is an arid, desert area, lying on the north edge of the Great American Desert and just south of the Great Basin. Its general elevation ranges from about 2000 to 4000 feet above sea level and slowly rises to the north toward the 5000 to 6000 foot elevation characteristic of the valleys of the Great Basin. On the south and east sides of southern Nevada is the Colorado River system, with its two large reservoirs, lakes Mead and Mohave. This river system flows in an canyon whose pre- dam floor was at about 500 to 600 feet above sea level. Rising from the desert floor are numerous mountain ranges. Most of these ranges seldom exceed an elevation of about 8000 feet, although the peak of the Charleston Mountains (Spring Mountain Range) reaches 11,910 feet elevation. Vegetation types in southern Nevada range from the cottonwood-willow (Populus- S&r) association along the banks of the Colorado River to the white fir-bristle-cone pine (Abies concolor-Pinus uristutu) belt high on Mount Charleston. However, most of the notes from which this paper was developed were obtained in the mesquite (Prosopis j&flora) bosquesalong the major drainage systems, in the farming areas of the Virgin, Moapa, Pahranagat, and Pahrump valley areas, or from the xeric desert shrub areas on the large alluvial fans between the desert ranges and the valley bottoms. The vegetation on these fans varies from a rather hostile creosote-bush-bur-sage (Larrka trident&u- Frunseriu dumosu) environment at lower elevations (2500 to 3500 feet elevation) to a somewhat more favorable and highly diversified mixed shrub environment on the higher slopes (3000 to 4500 feet elevation). -
