PTILONYSSUS ECHINATUS BERLESE Y TROUESSART, 1889 (ACARI, MESOSTIGMATA, RHINONYSSIDAE) NUEVO PARA LA FAUNA ESPAÑOLA: ESTUDIO MORFO-BIOMETRICO DE LA DEUTONINFA Y LA PROTONINFA M. B. Rodríguez, J. M. Ariza * RESUMEN Se presenta un estudio morfo-biométrico y una primera cita en España de las hembras de Ptilonyssus echinatus Berlese y Trouessart, 1889, utilizando dibujos de la morfología dor- sal y ventral así como una biometría completa. Asimismo, se incluye una amplia descrip- ción morfológica y biométrica (nueva para la ciencia) de la deutoninfa y protoninfa de esta especie. Los ácaros fueron recolectados de las fosas nasales de Hirundo rustica L. y Deli- chon urbica (L.) (Aves, Passeriformes, Hirundinidae) capturadas en la provincia de Gra- nada (España). El estudio de la variabilidad morfológica de los ejemplares obtenidos en Hirundo rustica y los de Delichon urbica nos lleva a pensar que las diferencias existentes entre ellos son sólo el producto de una gran variabilidad de la especie, que presenta tipos morfológicos distintos según el hospedador que parasita y la procedencia geográfica del mis- mo, y por tanto, se considera que dichas diferencias morfológicas en ningún caso pueden llevar a la creación de nuevas especies o subespecies tal como habían indicado algunos auto- res. pará- Palabras clave: Ptilonyssus echinatus, Acari, Rhinonyssidae, variabilidad, biometría, sitos nasales, aves, protoninfa, deutoninfa, España. Box 6037 Honolulu, Hawaii 96818 ABSTRACT The external parasites of native and exotic birds captured in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are recorded. Forty-nine species of mites in 13 families were recovered from 10 species of birds. First records of Harpyrhynchidae are given for 'Amakihi and 'Apapane; Cytodites sp. (Cytoditidae) is recorded from the Red-b'illed Leiothrix for the first time in Hawaili. Two undescribed species of Cheyletiellidae, 1 undescribed species of Pyroglyphidae, and 19 undescribed feather mites of the super- family Analgoidea are noted. RECOMMENDATIONS Information presented in this report is primarily of a pre- liminary nature due to the incomplete state of the taxonomy of mites. This data will add to the basic knowledge of the stress placed on the bird populations within the Park. The presence of Ornithonyssus sylviarum in collections made of the House Finch provides a potential vector for viral and other diseases of birds, including various encephalides and Newcastles Disease. -

Abstract: Rhinonyssidae (Mesostigmata) is a family of nasal mites only found in birds. All species are hematophagous endoparasites, which may damage the nasal cavities of birds, and also could be potential reservoirs or vectors of other infections. However, the role of members of Rhinonyssidae as disease vectors in wild bird populations remains uninvestigated, with studies of the microbiomes of Rhinonyssidae being almost non-existent. In the nasal mite (Tinaminyssus melloi) from rock doves (Columba livia), a previous study found evidence of a highly abundant putatively endosymbiotic bacteria from Class Alphaproteobacteria. Sampling requirements have prevented deeper analysis. Rhinonyssids have been explored in a few host specimens per species, leading to undetailed morphological descriptions and inaccurate epidemi- ology. We explore the relationships established between these parasites in two Columbiformes urban birds (domestic pigeon (Columba livia domestica) and Eurasian collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto)), assesing 250 individuals of each type in Seville (Spain). As expected, Mesonyssus melloi (Castro, 1948) and Mesonyssus columbae (Crossley, 1950) were found in domestic pigeons, and Mesonyssus streptopeliae (Fain, 1962) in Eurasian collared doves. However, M. columbae was found for the first time in Eurasian collared doves. This relationship could be common in nature, but sampling methodology or host switching could also account for this result. An additional unknown specimen was found in a Eurasian collared dove, which could be a new species or an aberrant individual. The collection was found to consist mainly of three genera: Laelaps, Androlaelaps and Ptilonyssus. This fauna is discussed against the backround of similar studies in Nigeria. Introduction The fauna of mesostigmatic mites parasitic on wild verte brates and birds in the Ethiopian zoogeographical region is relatively poorly studied. Present knowledge of this fauna is based mainly on studies in Southern Africa, Angola, Zaire Sudan and Egypt. The fauna of the West Africa subregion has remained comparatively less well known, although some contri bution to studies in this subregion has been made from Ni geria between 1968 and 1979 (OKEREKE 1968, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1979) Ghana (PAPERNA et al. 1970) and Liberia (FAIN et al. 1 974) . The present report based on a collection from Liberia is, therefore, of particular interest. The mites were collected by Dr. J. VOELKER between 1968 and 1971 during his studies of the helminths of Liberian mammals and birds at the depart ment of the Tropical Institute of Hamburg in Bongtown near Monrovia. -

(Received 18 September 2012; Accepted 3 October 2012) ABSTRACT Birds are host to a wide assemblage of parasitic arthropods, including mites (Acari), lice (Phiraptera) and fleas (Siphonaptera). A new species of nasal mite, Sternostoma zini n. sp. (Mesostigmata: Rhinonyssidae), collected from the Common Cuckoo, Cuculus canorus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Cuculiformes: Cuculidae) from Leningrad province, Russia, is described and illustrated. Sternostoma zini n. sp. is most similar to Sternostoma cuculorum Fain, 1956, which was also described from Cuculus canorus. These two species are distinguishable by several characteristics, such as the shape of the opisthosomal and genital shields, as well as opisthosomal and hypostomal chaetotaxy. Key words: Rhinonyssidae, Sternostoma zini, nasal mites, Cuculiformes, Cuculus canorus INTRODUCTION Mites (Arachnida: Acari) are one of the most diverse and common associates of birds, with at least 3,000 described species and 40 families of mites reported from birds (Proctor and Owens, 2000). The nature of symbioses between these mites and their hosts is variable, in that some species are highly detrimental parasites, such as the rhinonyssid nasal mite Sternostoma tracheacolum Lawrence, 1948, while others are commensal associates, such as most feather mites (Astigmata: Analgoidea, Pterolichoidea, Freyanoidea) (Proctor and Owens, 2000).
