Ten taxa were recorded, and their taxonomic positions are shown in a table. Key words: ticks, mites, birds, Wild Animal Medical Center, Japan Epidemiological surveys are an essential conservation tool for fully understanding infectious diseases. In 2004, we began an investigation of avian parasitic diseases at the Wild Animal Medical Center of the Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine of Rakuno Gakuen University, Japan (Asakawa 2010; Asakawa et al. 2002, 2013; Hirayama et al. 2013). This paper summarizes the findings of seven publications on avian ticks and parasitic mites (Nakamura et al. 2003; Uemura et al. 2010; Yoshino et al. 2003, 2009a, b, 2011, 2013). During submission of a publication for the proceedings of the 14th International Congress of Acarology, Kyoto, taxonomical inconsistencies, including invalid names or synonyms for mite species, were reported to us. -

PTILONYSSUS ECHINATUS BERLESE Y TROUESSART, 1889 (ACARI, MESOSTIGMATA, RHINONYSSIDAE) NUEVO PARA LA FAUNA ESPAÑOLA: ESTUDIO MORFO-BIOMETRICO DE LA DEUTONINFA Y LA PROTONINFA M. B. Rodríguez, J. M. Ariza * RESUMEN Se presenta un estudio morfo-biométrico y una primera cita en España de las hembras de Ptilonyssus echinatus Berlese y Trouessart, 1889, utilizando dibujos de la morfología dor- sal y ventral así como una biometría completa. Asimismo, se incluye una amplia descrip- ción morfológica y biométrica (nueva para la ciencia) de la deutoninfa y protoninfa de esta especie. Los ácaros fueron recolectados de las fosas nasales de Hirundo rustica L. y Deli- chon urbica (L.) (Aves, Passeriformes, Hirundinidae) capturadas en la provincia de Gra- nada (España). El estudio de la variabilidad morfológica de los ejemplares obtenidos en Hirundo rustica y los de Delichon urbica nos lleva a pensar que las diferencias existentes entre ellos son sólo el producto de una gran variabilidad de la especie, que presenta tipos morfológicos distintos según el hospedador que parasita y la procedencia geográfica del mis- mo, y por tanto, se considera que dichas diferencias morfológicas en ningún caso pueden llevar a la creación de nuevas especies o subespecies tal como habían indicado algunos auto- res. pará- Palabras clave: Ptilonyssus echinatus, Acari, Rhinonyssidae, variabilidad, biometría, sitos nasales, aves, protoninfa, deutoninfa, España. Box 844, Ames, Iowa 50010, 1 Department of Entomology, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minnesota 55108, and 4 Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, Okeechobee, Florida 34974 ABSTRACT: Thirty fulvous whistling-ducks (Dendrocygna bicolor) collected during 1984-1985 from the Ever- glades Agricultural Area of southern Florida were examined for parasites. Twenty-eight species were identified and included 8 trematodes, 6 cestodes, 1 nematode, 4 chewing lice, and 9 mites. All parasites except the 4 species of lice and 1 of the mites are new host records for fulvous whistling-ducks. None of the ducks were infected with blood parasites. Every duck was infected with at least 2 species of helminths (mean 4.2; range 2- 8 species). The most common helminths were the trematodes Echinostoma trivolvis and Typhlocoelum cucu- merinum and 2 undescribed cestodes of the genus Diorchis, which occurred in prevalences of 67, 63, 50, and 50%, respectively. Only 1 duck was free of parasitic arthropods; each of the other 29 ducks was infested with at least 3 species of arthropods (mean 5.3; range 3-9 species). The most common arthropods included an undescribed feather mite (Ingrassia sp.) and the chewing louse Holomenopon leucoxanthum, both of which occurred in 97% of the ducks. -

Box 6037 Honolulu, Hawaii 96818 ABSTRACT The external parasites of native and exotic birds captured in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are recorded. Forty-nine species of mites in 13 families were recovered from 10 species of birds. First records of Harpyrhynchidae are given for 'Amakihi and 'Apapane; Cytodites sp. (Cytoditidae) is recorded from the Red-b'illed Leiothrix for the first time in Hawaili. Two undescribed species of Cheyletiellidae, 1 undescribed species of Pyroglyphidae, and 19 undescribed feather mites of the super- family Analgoidea are noted. RECOMMENDATIONS Information presented in this report is primarily of a pre- liminary nature due to the incomplete state of the taxonomy of mites. This data will add to the basic knowledge of the stress placed on the bird populations within the Park. The presence of Ornithonyssus sylviarum in collections made of the House Finch provides a potential vector for viral and other diseases of birds, including various encephalides and Newcastles Disease. -

MELLIS, ANNA MARIE M.S. Spatial Variation in Mammal and Ectoparasite Communities in the Foothills along the Southern Appalachian Mountains. (2021) Directed by Dr. Bryan McLean. 66 pp. Small mammal and ectoparasite community variation and abundance is important for monitoring the transmission rate of zoonotic diseases and informing conservation efforts that maintain host and parasite biodiversity in ecosystems facing global climate change. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors driving variation in small mammal and ectoparasite communities in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. I took an approach to sampling that allowed me to test predictions from island biogeography theory; namely, that host species richness varies with distance from the main Appalachian mountain range. I also examined how ectoparasite species richness varied with small mammal richness as well as ecological variables. Finally, I analyzed ectoparasite abundances at the community- and individual-host levels to understand how changes in host species richness may affect infestation rates. Comprehensive field surveys and ectoparasite screenings were performed across four field sites, two isolated from the Southern Appalachian Mountains and two along the Southern Appalachian Mountains. I found that these field sites were characterized by a mix of high and low elevation mammal species, and that community structure varied with degree of isolation for mammals, but not ectoparasites. Habitat type was a significant driver of species variation within and among sites. I found decreased abundances in ectoparasite compound communities when host species diversity was highest, which is consistent with predictions from a dilution effect. However, when evaluating abundances of individual ectoparasites, only one (Leptotrombidium peromysci) of four species displayed patterns consistent a dilution effect. -
