And to begin with South Africa is a multi-party democracy. Currently parliament’s National Assembly consists of 14 political parties. Parliament even has a specific committee representing woman from different political parties called the Multi-Party Woman Caucus. One of the issues it address is gender responsive planning, budgetary framework. At the end of August there was also a special woman’s parliament which was convened under the theme “Gender and Institutionalism: towards strengthening the national gender machinery” as a response to addressing gender based violence in South Africa, which included a 25 year review of the Woman’s Charter for Effective Equality.
