“Safe from Destruction by Fire” Isabella Stewart Gardner’s Venetian Manuscripts Anne- Marie Eze Houghton Library, Harvard University ver a decade ago the exhibition Gondola Days: Isabella Stewart Gardner and the Palazzo Barbaro Circle explored the rich Pan- OEuropean and American expatriate culture that fl ourished in Venice at the end of the nineteenth century and inspired Isabella Stewart Gardner (1840–1924) to create a museum in Boston as a temple to Venetian art and architecture (fi g. 1). On this occasion, attention was drawn for the fi rst time to the museum’s holdings of Venetian manuscripts, and it was observed that in her day Gardner had been the only prominent American collector of manuscripts to focus on Venice.1 The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum’s collection of Venetian manuscripts comprises more than thirty items, spanning the fi eenth to eighteenth centuries. The collections can be divided into four broad categories: offi cial documents issued by the Doges; histories of the Most Serene Republic of Venice—called the “Sereni- ssima”—its government, and its patriciate; diplomas; and a statute book of 1 Helena Szépe, “Isabella Stewart Gardner’s Venetian Manuscripts,” in Gondola Days: Isa- bella Stewart Gardner and the Palazzo Barbaro Circle, ed. The Gardner’s collection not only charts the evolution over three centuries of Venetian book production, but also provides a wealth of sources for the study of the history, portraiture, iconography, genealogy, and heraldry of the Republic of Venice. -

1 Bernard Berenson at Harvard College* Rachel Cohen When Bernard Berenson began his university studies, he was eighteen years old, and his family had been in the United States for eight years. The Berensons, who had been the Valvrojenskis when they left the village of Butrimonys in Lithuania, had settled in the West End of Boston. They lived near the North Station rail yard and the North End, which would soon see a great influx of Eastern European Jews. But the Berensons were among the early arrivals, their struggles were solitary, and they had not exactly prospered. Albert Berenson (fig. CC.I.1), the father of the family, worked as a tin peddler, and though he had tried for a while to run a small shop out of their house, that had failed, and by the time Berenson began college, his father had gone back to the long trudging rounds with his copper and tin pots. Berenson did his first college year at Boston University, but, an avid reader and already a lover of art and culture, he hoped for a wider field. It seems that he met Edward Warren (fig. CC.I.16), with whom he shared an interest in classical antiquities, and that Warren generously offered to pay the fees that had otherwise prevented Berenson from attempting to transfer to Harvard. To go to Harvard would, in later decades, be an ambition of many of the Jews of Boston, both the wealthier German and Central European Jews who were the first to come, and the poorer Jews, like the Berensons, who left the Pale of Settlement in the period of economic crisis and pogroms.1 But Berenson came before this; he was among a very small group of Jewish students, and one of the first of the Russian Jews, to go to Harvard. -

Poor Susan & 11 Grace passed most wretched nights, & were pretty well exhausted when we reached here 12 in the early morning. 13 Mackay came most pleasantly from the Hague to be with us here, & we have 14 enjoyed these two days greatly. 15 The Cathedral tower is one of the noblest pieces of Gothic construction & 16 proportion that I know. It dominates the picturesque & prosperous city, reinforcing its 17 character, turning its pleasant, cleanly, streets into pathways of poetry, & redeeming even 18 the vulgarity of the petty tradesmen. I begin to wonder when Americans will ever build 19 anything half so fine. 20 Rubens is in great force here. His pictures positively compel intrude upon you, 21 however quietly disposed you may be. -

This program supports the artistic development of students demonstrating unusual accomplishment and/or evidence of significant artistic promise. The ADF program represents Harvard’s deep commitment to arts practice on campus and provides financial support for the creative and professional growth of student artists. Carpenter [ORCID iD: 0000-0001-9336-6367] INTRODUCTION In 1991, at the opening of an exhibition to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Houghton Library, Roger Stoddard related “How Harvard Didn’t Get Its Rare Books and Manuscripts”— why Harvard has no library of medieval manuscripts, no major European literary archive, and no early library. Most of us in what is now Houghton Library’s Edison and Newman Room were saddened to learn that Harvard almost came into possession of the Si Thomas Phillipps collection of manuscripts, a major European literary archive, and a sixteenth-century library.1 Yet another collection that Harvard almost acquired is a portion of George Washington’s own library, which is housed instead across the river at the Boston Athenæum. Although the Harvard-connected scholars who took the lead in negotiating for the library first turned to Harvard to acquire it, their major goal was to keep the books in the United States. -

THE ALUMNI MAGAZINE OF ADAMS HOUSE, HARVARD COLLEGE GALAXY GAZER William Liller '48, Adams House Master, 1969-73 The year 1944 was notable for various reasons: D-Day, Rome was liberated, the war in the Pacific was finally going well, FDR got re- elected for a fourth term, and although we didn't know it at the time, the atom bomb was almost ready to be dropped. (Alas, the Red Sox, with Ted Williams now a Marine pilot, finished fourth; the hapless Boston Braves finished sixth.) 1944 was also the start of my connection with Harvard, a couple of weeks after the invasion of Normandy. After attending public schools in my home town of Atlanta, I was shipped off "to finish", and I spent my last two high school years at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania. When senior year came around, I had only a vague idea of going to Harvard, known to me mainly for its football team and a world-famous astronomer, Harlow Shapley. My father, a successful adman, had no input in my decision; it was my best friend, Shaw Livermore, who talked me into applying. His dad had a Harvard degree; mine was a UPenn dropout. My grades had been only slightly better than average, but somehow, I got accepted. Maybe it was because the southern boy quota was unfilled, or maybe it was that that Harvard was scraping the barrel in those grim Bill Liller in Chile, 1996 WW II years. Whatever the reason, I got lucky: I had not applied to any other university. We began our Harvard experience in July of 1944. -

Harvard Confederates Who Fell in the Civil
Advocates for Harvard ROTC H CRIMSON CLUB MEMBER VETERANS As a result of their military service, Crimson warriors became part of a “Band of Brothers”. The following is an illustrative but not exhaustive listing of military oriented biographies of veterans whose initial exposure to non-family “brotherhood” were as members of various social and final clubs as undergraduates at Harvard. CIVIL WAR - HARVARD COLLEGE BY CLASS 18 34 Major General Henry C. Wayne CSA Born in Georgia – Georgia Militia Infantry Henry was the son of a lawyer and US congressman from Georgia who was later appointed as justice to the US Supreme Court by President Andrew Jackson. He prepared at the Williston School in Northampton (MA) for Harvard where he was member of the Porcellian Club. In his junior year at Harvard, he received and accepted an appointment to West Point where he graduated 14th out of 45 in 1838. Among his class mates at West Point were future flag officers: Major General Irvin McDowell USA who was defeated at the 1st battle of Bull Run, General P.G.T. Beauregard CSA who was the victor at the1st battle of Bull Run as well as numerous other major Civil War engagements and Lt. General William J. Hardee CSA who served in both Mexican War and throughput the Civil War. After West Point, Henry was commissioned as a 2nd LT and served for 3 years with the 4th US Artillery on the frontiers border of NY and ME during a border dispute with Canada. He then taught artillery and cavalry tactics at West Point for 5 years before joining General Winfield Scott’s column from Vera Cruz to Mexico City during in the Mexican War. -
