  • The Eiffel Tower Paris, France the Architect
The Eiffel Tower Paris, France The Architect ©Shutterstock Born on December 15, 1832, in Dijon, Gustave Eiffel was an exceptionally gifted engineer and builder. He graduated from the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in 1855, the same year that Paris hosted the first World’s Fair. He spent several years in southwestern France, where he supervised work on the great railway bridge in Bordeaux. In 1864, he set up in his own right as a “constructor,” specializing in metal structural work. Eiffel would go on to build hundreds of different types of metal structures all around the world. Bridges, and particularly railway bridges, were his favorite field of work, but he also won renown for his metal structural work and industrial installations. His career was marked by a large number of fine structures and buildings, two of the most outstanding being the twin edifices of the Porto viaduct and the Garabit viaduct in the Cantal region of France. Equally outstanding are the other structures where the pure inventiveness of Eiffel’s company was allowed free rein, such as the “portable” bridges sold around the world as “kits,” and the ingenious structure of the Statue of Liberty in New York. His entrepreneurial career culminated in 1889 with the completion of the Eiffel Tower. Two years earlier, in 1887, Eiffel had agreed to build the locks of the Panama Canal. It was an immense undertaking, but the project was badly managed and went on to become one of the biggest financial scandals of the century. After clearing his name, Eiffel retired to devote the final thirty years of his life to scientific research.

  • Geometry/Labor = Volume/Mass?*
Geometry/Labor = Volume/Mass?* DARCY GRIMALDO GRIGSBY This is a story about geometry and engineering and also modern hubris. If someone, besides myself, is to be blamed for my title, it is Charles de Freycinet, although to be fair, he is merely an especially useful representative of late-nineteenth- century France.1 An engineer and graduate of the École Polytechnique, he like so many other engineers of this period was a successful politician during the Third Republic. Freycinet was Prime Minister four times between 1879 and 1892, senator for more than forty-three years, and coauthor of a key project for the national con- struction of some eighteen thousand kilometers of railway crisscrossing France. He also wrote a book on modern Egypt and a small lovely treatise called De l’Expérience en Géométrie (Of Experience in Geometry).2 I begin by quoting the latter at length: The bodies of Nature, particularly solid bodies, are the origin of the fundamental concepts of Geometry. First we distinguish volume, that is to say the portion of space or the extension occupied by the body. To give it a concrete representation, one can imagine that the body is replaced by a very thin envelope which exactly reproduces the exterior form. The first abstraction made by Geometry consists therefore of retiring from the body its own * This essay represents aspects of my new book, Colossal Engineering, and was funded by an Andrew W. Mellon New Directions Fellowship and a U.C. Berkeley Townsend Center Initiative Grant for Associate Professors. I would like to thank Professor Kathleen James-Chakraborty, architectural historian, for her suggestions as well as the engineers at U.C.

  • DUE O TRE COSE CHE SO DI LEI 4 Due O Tre Cose Che So Di Lei a Cura Di Eusebio Trabucchi Un Poster Di Grande Effetto Del 1905

  • Kindertagesstätte in Buhl
Not only is Buhl the birthplace of a renowned visionary without whom two world-famous landmarks would probably not exist, the Alsatian municipality is also rather unconventional when it comes to current building projects. For the panning of a day care centre, the administration of Buhl commissioned architectural practice Domi- nique Coulon & associés from Strasbourg – and hoped for a new building. The result is an institution with a distinctive cubic volume and an offensive colourfulness – both externally and internally. von • by Vera Cramer as bekannteste Werk des französischen Bildhauers Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi ist die DFreiheitsstatue auf Liberty Island.

MUSEE BARTHOLDI - 2e étage - Les Salles américaines CAGE D’ESCALIER Deux grands tableaux : LA CALIFORMIE DE JADIS (A) LA CALIFORNIE NOUVELLE (B) Huile sur toile, environ 150,00 x 200,00 cm chacune. N.s. [A. Bartholdi] – n.d. Musée Bartholdi. Inv. (A) : 2004.0.14 ; (B) : 2004.0.15.
