This dissertation is now done and I hope it contains slightly more than just the quality of being done. As I am finally writing this, perhaps the most fun part of the dissertation, I must risk repeating another cliché and say this dissertation is a co-creation of many individuals who guided, mentored, and encouraged me along the way. First I want to thank my chair, Ramón A. Gutiérrez, who sustained my whole research and writing process through his unyielding support and firm conviction in my abilities. He spent many thankless hours meticulously reading my drafts and gave both far-reaching and detailed advices on how to improve them. Ramón has been a role model not only for historical research and writing but also for how to organize life and manage time. My readers, Matthew Briones and Amy Lippert, offered crucial guidance and mentorship far beyond the capacity of a dissertation committee. Training I received from Julie Saville and Jim Sparrow in U.S. history seminars also proved indispensable throughout my scholarly pursuits. I would have been a very different scholar without the inspiration and insights I drew from all of them. Sullivan Specialist in Latin American Affairs November 27, 2012 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov RL30981 CRS Report for Congress Prepared for Members and Committees of Congress Panama: Political and Economic Conditions and U.S. Relations Summary With five successive elected civilian governments, the Central American nation of Panama has made notable political and economic progress since the 1989 U.S. military intervention that ousted the regime of General Manuel Antonio Noriega from power. Current President Ricardo Martinelli of the center-right Democratic Change (CD) party was elected in May 2009, defeating the ruling center-left Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) in a landslide. Martinelli was inaugurated to a five-year term on July 1, 2009. Martinelli’s Alliance for Change coalition with the Panameñista Party (PP) also captured a majority of seats in Panama’s National Assembly. Panama’s service-based economy has been booming in recent years – with a growth rate of 7.6% in 2010 and 10.6% in 2011 – largely because of the ongoing Panama Canal expansion project, now slated for completion in early 2015. The CD’s coalition with the PP fell apart at the end of August 2011when President Martinelli sacked PP leader Juan Carlos Varela as Foreign Minister. Varela, however, retains his position as Vice President. Tensions between the CD and the PP had been growing throughout 2011, largely related to which party would head the coalition’s ticket for the 2014 presidential election. Despite the breakup of the coalition, the strength of the CD has grown significantly since 2009 because of defections from the PP and the PRD and it now has a majority on its own in the legislature.

John Sutter was trapped in an endless cycle of great triumph and failure throughout his life. As a Swiss immigrant to North America, Sutter was an influential figure in the history of the American Frontier, Mexican California, and the California Gold Rush. He was the quintessential foreign-born pioneer of the American West. Despite the antagonistic social, geographical, and legal forces, Sutter never lost his determination. Although he was one of the central agents in the start of the California Gold Rush, he was ultimately unable to capitalize on his findings. Ironically, the unearthing of gold at Sutter's Mill was the origin of his tragic downfall.

Farnham ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to explore the ways in which working-class Kānaka Hawai’i (Hawaiian) immigrants in the nineteenth century repurposed and repackaged precontact Hawai’i strategies of accommodation and resistance in their migration towards North America and particularly within California. The arrival of European naturalists, American missionaries, and foreign merchants in the Hawaiian Islands is frequently attributed for triggering this diaspora. However, little has been written about why Hawaiian immigrants themselves chose to migrate eastward across the Pacific or their reasons for permanent settlement in California. Like the ali’i on the Islands, Hawaiian commoners in the diaspora exercised agency in their accommodation and resistance to Pacific imperialism and colonialism as well. Blending labor history, religious history, and anthropology, this thesis adopts an interdisciplinary and ethnohistorical approach that utilizes Hawaiian-language newspapers, American missionary letters, and oral histories from California’s indigenous peoples.

To date, there has been limited recognition of this practice’s influence on the development of British Columbia. The historical works that do exist on the subject argue that the practice was not established in the colony owing to the Colonial Government’s allowance for Mining Boards, a representative institution, by The Gold Fields Act, 1859. To the contrary, this thesis looks at the different ways that miners’ meetings and miners’ customary law were expressed and adapted to conditions in British Columbia before and after the passing of The Gold Fields Act, 1859.
