CKS NEWSLETTER Fall 2008 Center for Korean Studies, University of California, Berkeley Message from the Chair Dear Friends of CKS, Colleagues and Students: As we look forward to the thirtieth anniversary of the Center for Korean Studies (CKS) in 2009, we welcome our friends, colleagues, visiting scholars, and students to a year of new programs that we have scheduled for 2008–2009. In addition to continuing with the regular programs of past years, we began this year with the conference “Places at the Table,” an in-depth exploration of Asian women artists with a strong focus on Korean art. We presented a conference on “Reunification: Building Permanent Peace in Korea” (October 10) and a screening of the documentary film “Koryo Saram” (October 24). “Strong Voices,” a forum on Korean and American women poets, is scheduled for April 1–5, 2009. We are in the early planning stages for a dialogue on Korean poetry between Professor Robert Hass of UC Berkeley and Professor David McCann of Harvard, in conjunction with performances of Korean pansori and gayageum (September 2009). Providing that funding is approved by the Korea Foundation, an international conference on Korean Peninsula security issues (organized by Professor Hong Yung Lee) is also planned for next year. The list of colloquium speakers, conferences, seminars, and special events is now available on the CKS website. (See page 2 for the fall and spring schedule.) We welcome novelist Kyung Ran Jo as our third Daesan Foundation Writer-in-Residence. Ms Jo, whose novels have won many awards, will give lectures and share her writing with the campus community through December of this year. -

Korea’s Literary Tradition Bruce Fulton Introduction monks and the Shilla warrior youth known as hwarang. Corresponding to Chinese Tang poetry Korean literature reflects Korean culture, itself and Sanskrit poetry, they have both religious and a blend of a native tradition originating in Siberia; folk overtones. religions Article The Unificationist Funerary Tradition Lukas Pokorny Department of Religious Studies, University of Vienna, 1010 Vienna, Austria; [email protected] Received: 22 April 2020; Accepted: 17 May 2020; Published: 20 May 2020 Abstract: This paper explores the distinctive funerary tradition of the Unification Movement, a globally active South Korean new religious movement founded in 1954. Its funerary tradition centres on the so-called Seonghwa (formerly Seunghwa) Ceremony, which was introduced in January 1984. The paper traces the doctrinal context and the origin narrative before delineating the ceremony itself in its Korean expression, including its preparatory and follow-up stages, as well as its short-lived adaptation for non-members. Notably, with more and more first-generation adherents passing away—most visibly in respect to the leadership culminating in the Seonghwa Ceremony of the founder himself in 2012—the funerary tradition has become an increasingly conspicuous property of the Unificationist lifeworld. This paper adds to a largely uncharted area in the study of East Asian new religious movements, namely the examination of their distinctive deathscapes, as spelled out in theory and practice. How have modern Korean writers grappled with this question? Moving from early twentieth century to the present, we will cover major literary movements, their key works and authors, and techniques of close reading and analysis. We will explore how the search for the modern self intersected with processes of colonialism, enlightenment, nation building, migration, urbanization, industrialization, liberation, war, national division, democratization, neoliberalism, and virtualization. By the end of the course, students will have enhanced their aesthetic responsiveness to literary works and know how to contextualize them within modern Korea’s broader socio-historical trajectory, through eras of Japanese occupation, the Cold War, and post-democratization. No background in Korean language, history, or culture is required. Unhyeongung Collection
Unhyeongung Collection 2003 Director’s Message The collection of the Seoul Museum of History consists of items donated by individuals from Seoul and the other parts of the country, items obtained through regular acquisition activities, and the relics from Unhyeongung Palace, which are revealed to the public in this catalogue. Donated relics and acquisitions have been introduced to the public and related specialists through the standing exhibition, special exhibitions, and general exhibitions. The Unhyeongung relics, however, are being presnted for the first time. This catalogue, Unhyeongung Palace Relics I, is the second published by the Seoul Museum of History on relics in its collection following Korean Wood Furniture , which was published in 2002. Sharing information on its collection not only with related specialists but also members of the general public is one part of the museum’s efforts to make itself a relevant part of the lives of the citizens. Though Unhyeongung is diminished in comparison to its heyday, many major buildings still remain, including Norakdang, Noandang, and Irodang. The palace was the private residence of the Prince Regent Heungseon Daewongun and the place where his son Gojong was born and raised till the age of 12 when he ascended the throne. In total it served as the home for five generations of royal family members including Yi Jae-myeon, Yi Jun-yong, Yi Woo, and Yi Cheong, and thus has an important place in the modern history of Korea. The Seoul Metropolitan Government acquired the Unhyeongung relics in 1993 when it purchased the palace, and in 1998 it transferred management of the relics to the Seoul Museum of History. -

In an increasingly global context, it’s almost impossible to imagine the world without a mediating language (lingua franca) or the aid of translation. The process of translation is one of making of translation choices. There are many cases where two languages do not have identical ways to express the same concept and a translator has to find a way to close this gap. Especially when dealing with cultural, social or institutional terms, there may be no equivalent in the target language. How a translator chooses to solve such issues may depend on the target audience, the text type, the purpose of the translated text, understanding of the message or simply the preference of the translator.
