Central Avenue Bus Lane launches Oct. 8

Dedicated transit lanes have been successful in cities across the country, by providing more transportation options, improving safety, and encouraging sustainable transportation choices. In December

2019, CATS and CDOT implemented the City’s first Shared Bus-Bike

BUS Lane. With the success of the 4th Street bus/bike lane pilot, CATS and

Y ONL CDOT looked for other opportunities to implement dedicated transit corridors in Charlotte.

On September 8, 2020, Charlotte City Council approved a dedicated bus lane pilot along Central Ave from Eastland Transit Center to Eastway Drive. Road work began September 21 and includes lane restriping, signal work, and signage installation. CATS staff is also evaluating increasedONL busY frequency along Route 9. The official completion of the pilotBUS lane is October 8. This means only bus and bikes can travel in the lane.

With the success of Phases 1 and 2, the two lanes could eventually be connected during a Phase 3 extension from Eastway Drive into Uptown.

Find more information about the project and a survey about the lane on the CATS website. CATS is currently in Pre-Project Development and conducting Early Scoping of the LYNX Silver Line in collaboration with the Federal Transit Administration. The LYNX Silver Line is a proposed 26-mile light rail project from the City of Belmont in Gaston County, through Center City Charlotte and the Town of Matthews, with a potential extension into Union County.

CATS is refining the proposed alignment, or locally preferred alternative (LPA), and evaluating different alignment options to create a buildable project. An important part of the process is community feedback - that’s why we need your input!
