Trip Report – RBL , & Zambia - Overland I 2017 2 ______Tour Summary

Our first day of the tour started in Namibia’s capital city, . After breakfast, a few of us headed out and birded along some of the acacia thickets just outside of the hotel we were staying at. After two and a half hours of birding, we managed to get a good species count, considering the time spent. Some of the highlights we witnessed included Cardinal Woodpecker, Rosy-faced Lovebird, Barred Wren-Warbler, Diederik Cuckoo and Swallow-tailed Bee-eater. By lunchtime, the entire group had arrived and we went to visit Joe’s Beer House, which was on the way to our first official stop of the tour.

During lunch, the rain started to pour down and it continued as we made our way to Avis Dam; thankfully, by the time we had arrived, the rain had stopped. One of the first to greet us was the beautiful Crimson-breasted Shrike, and in the distance, we could see one African Fish Eagle. At the edge of the car park, we had a good number of acacia- dwelling species arrive, such as Pririt Batis, Yellow-bellied Eremomela, Long-billed Crombec, Ashy Tit, Acacia Pied Barbet, and a Shaft-tailed Whydah. As we walked along the Pririt Batis by Gareth Robbins dam wall, we saw Greater Striped Swallows, House and Rock Martins, African Palm Swifts and Little and White- rumped Swifts too! The dam itself had filled up nicely with all the late rain and, due to this, we managed to get a look at South African Shelduck, Red-knobbed Coots, Red-billed Teal, Black- necked Grebes, as well as a Wood Sandpiper and a few Cape Wagtails.

On the other side of the dam wall, we were presented with some more Acacia Thicket, and here we saw White-browed Sparrow-Weavers, Fork-tailed Drongo, Black-faced and Blue Waxbills, Southern Red Bishops, Red-backed Shrike, Common Scimitarbill, Grey-backed Camaroptera and an African Paradise Flycatcher. We walked towards the rocky cliffs and here we saw Rock Hyrax, Short-toed Rock-Thrush, Mountain Wheatear, Rattling Cisticola, Cape Bunting, Black-chested Prinia, Pale-winged Starling and we also got a lovely view of an Icterine Warbler. We then decided to make our way back to the tour vehicle and we had a brief look at a Bradfield’s Swift as it flew over us.

Our first full day of the tour started with a few more Bradfield’s Swifts flying over us as we packed the tour vehicle and met Willem – our local bird expert and driver for the tour. We made our way to Daan Viljoen Game Reserve, which was located a few kilometres just outside of Windhoek. As we started to get near the reserve, we were surrounded by acacia trees and immediately we started to view some new birds, such as Jacobin Cuckoo, Brown Snake Eagle, Verreaux’s Shaft-tailed Whydah by Judi Helsby Eagle and Monteiro’s Hornbills. Before entering, we

Trip Report – RBL Namibia, Botswana & Zambia - Overland I 2017 3 ______drove parallel to the reserve and we saw the subspecies of Southern Giraffe called the Angolan Giraffe. At the same time, we succeeded in getting a decent look at a pair of African Hawk Eagles and had one quick look at a Black Cuckoo flying over the road. As soon as we entered the main road leading to the reserve, we saw two Great Spotted Cuckoos.

We entered the reserve and along the way to the new restaurant area, we saw Gemsbok (Oryx) and Giraffe in the distance. We made a stop at the reception area to really appreciate a Purple Roller through the spotting scope and had a very nice close look at a Familiar Chat and before commencing with the walking to the dam. En route to the dam, we came across Long-billed Pipits, Red-billed Spurfowl and the beautiful Violet-eared Waxbill by Gareth Robbins Violet-eared Waxbills. We then caught up with Willem and continued to walk to the old restaurant area. From this section, we could see the dam within the rocky habitat and it did not take us long to locate a few Mountain Wheatears, Golden- tailed Woodpeckers, more Chestnut-vented Warblers, as well as a Black-Chested Snake Eagle. All of a sudden, a rather special bird jumped into the tree ahead of us and this was one of our target birds for the day: the Rockrunner! At first, we did not get to view this bird well so we walked around to the top of the dam wall and from here we saw it pretty clearly. From this vantage point, we were also successful in spotting Pale-winged Starling, Rock Kestrels, as well as two Klipspringers. As we were about to leave the reserve, we noticed a few Eland down in a valley, and just outside the reserve, we saw Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill and a Booted Eagle. By this point, it was midday, and we still had to cover another 200km along the C26 dirt road, which would ultimately lead us to our guest farm on the top of the Spreetshoogte Pass.

It did not take us long at all to start finding a whole new variety of birds, such as Rufous-eared Warblers, Burchell’s and Wattled Starlings, Lappet-faced Vultures, Green-winged Pytilias, the charismatic White-tailed Shrike, Sabota and Monotonous , Long-tailed Paradise Whydahs, Chat and Spotted Flycatchers, Namaqua Dove, Cinnamon-breasted and Larklike Buntings, Northern Black Korhaan, the huge Kori Bustard, Pale Chanting Goshawk, Mountain Wheatear, Bokmakierie, Namaqua Sandgrouse, Grey-backed Sparrowlarks, Red-backed and Lesser Grey Shrikes, Southern Fiscal, Scaly-feathered Weavers and two Tawny Eagles. There was so much water around, that we were also able to see a Black-winged Stilt and a Three-banded Plover.

One of the main highlights of the day was coming across a colony of Chestnut Weavers which are not commonly seen so far South in Namibia. We passed a few private farms where we saw Common Ostrich, Gemsbok, Blesbok, Springbok, Impala and Mountain Zebras. We finally Chestnut Weaver by Gareth Robbins

Trip Report – RBL Namibia, Botswana & Zambia - Overland I 2017 4 ______arrived at the lodge and were greeted by a few more -like Buntings, as well as Blacksmith and Crowned Lapwings. We quickly dropped off our luggage in our luxurious rooms on the mountain and headed back to the main farmhouse for dinner, where we had a fantastic traditional Bobotie and Malva Pudding. On our drive back, we looked at a few constellations and we were very fortunate to see a Caracal sitting on the rocks near our rooms.

At sunrise, we packed our bags and made our way to the main farmhouse for breakfast. Just before we went into the house, we took a very short walk in the front garden and came across a Karoo Scrub Robin, a Groundscraper Thrush and an African Hoopoe. At the same time, the Crowned Lapwings were sounding very distressed and, suddenly, we spotted a large bird of prey in the tree above us, which turned out to be a Eurasian Honey Buzzard. After a delicious breakfast, we made our way down the 1000m high Spreetshoogte Pass. Unfortunately, the wind was blowing and this made the birding rather difficult, but fortunately, around halfway down the pass, we heard Black-chested Snake Eagle by Gareth an Orange River Francolin calling, and after a long Robbins period of searching, the bird stood out in the open for all of us to have a look at.

We then proceeded down the pass and came across another large Chestnut Weaver colony at the bottom. We then drove into the Namib-Naukluft National Park and here we managed to see Rock Kestrel, Pale Chanting Goshawk, as well as plenty of Lark-like Buntings and Grey-backed Sparrowlarks. We then took a short detour to the smallest town in Namibia, Solitaire, and here we refuelled and got ready for our long drive to . Along the way, we saw Black-chested Snake Eagle, Secretarybirds, Double-banded and Namaqua Sandgrouse, Booted Eagle, Greater Kestrel, Karoo Chat and many Stark’s Larks. Towards the latter part of the day, we had a fantastic sighting of a Karoo Long-billed Lark, and we even managed to experience a small amount of precipitation in the desert.

On the last stretch to Walvis Bay, we were very fortunate to see Tractrac Chats, Grey’s Larks and one Rüppell's Korhaan. We finally arrived in Walvis Bay, and just before checking into our hotel, we spotted a few Hartlaub’s and Kelp Gulls, and a Great White Pelican on the shore. We left our hotel in the dark and made our way to Rooibank, as this is the best-known area to find Namibia’s one endemic: the Dune Lark. We arrived at our destination early and waited for first light. During this waiting time period, we had a thorough look at Jupiter and the Scorpius constellation. We also heard a Spotted Eagle Owl call and successfully Double-banded Sandgrouse by Gareth Robbins

Trip Report – RBL Namibia, Botswana & Zambia - Overland I 2017 5 ______managed to locate it. As the light was coming up, we made our way into the dunes, and as we neared the back dunes, we heard a few Dune Larks calling. We eventually saw our first bird and by the end of the walk, we had seen six different birds.

We then drove back to our hotel and had a very good breakfast. After breakfast, we took a drive along the lagoon and the salt works, where we saw many Lesser and Greater Flamingos, Great White Pelicans, Hartlaub’s, Kelp and Grey- headed Gulls and many terns, such as the Sandwich, Common, Great Crested and Caspian. We even saw a lady wearing a pink outfit modelling as a flamingo in the lagoon! We entered the Salt Works, where we saw many White-fronted Plovers, Curlew Sandpipers, Little Stints, Sanderlings, Grey Plovers, Bar-tailed Godwits, Whimbrel, Cape Teals and a Black- winged Stilt. We then had lunch at our hotel and before visiting the Swakopmund Salt Works, we Greater Crested Tern by Gareth Robbins viewed some Welwitschias, Cape and White- breasted Cormorants, Red-capped Lark and a Common Ringed Plover. We ended the day by finding some Orange River White-eyes at the hotel’s restaurant. On the mammal side of things, we saw a few Afro-Australasian Fur Seals and Dolphins in the bay.

After a big breakfast at our hotel in Walvis Bay, we did a quick bout of birding in and around the hotel gardens. Here we spotted Orange River White-eye and two Willow Warblers. We then drove to Swakopmund and stopped at a coastal viewpoint where we saw a few Ruddy Turnstones, Whimbrel, Common, Sandwich and Greater-crested Terns and White-breasted Cormorants. We then made our way to the Spitzkoppe Mountains and here we had to work really hard to get a fabulous sighting of two Herero Chats. We also saw Layard’s and Chestnut-vented Warblers, Carp’s Black Tit, Acacia Pied Barbet, many Mountain Wheatears and Pale-winged Starlings.

After an incredibly successful visit, we drove towards the Erongo Mountains, stopping at the Kahn River. It was here that we saw such great birds as a couple of Rüppell’s Parrots, Damara Red-billed Hornbill and a Pearl-spotted Owlet. We then drove to our beautiful lodge in the mountains and heard and briefly saw the Hartlaubs’s Spurfowl. We thoroughly enjoyed an exquisite dinner, which was accompanied by the sounds of the Western Barn Owl and Freckled Nightjars in the background. After a large thunderstorm during the night, Great White Pelican by Gareth Robbins we started the day with a pre-dawn walk in

Trip Report – RBL Namibia, Botswana & Zambia - Overland I 2017 6 ______search of the Hartlaub’s Spurfowl. It was not long before we heard the first calls of the bird, and after a long-distance sighting, we had a close view of a male and female Hartlaub’s Spurfowl on a large granite boulder next to the path. We continued our walk and saw Barred Wren-Warbler, Carp’s Black Tit, Monteiro’s Hornbill, familiar Chat, Rosy-faced Lovebirds, Peregrine Falcon and an Acacia Pied Barbet. We then went for breakfast and here we had incredibly close views of the breeding pair of African Paradise Flycatchers, as well as more Rosy- faced Lovebirds. Some of the mammals that were seen from the breakfast table were Rock Hyrax, Chacma Baboon and Dassie Rats.

After breakfast, a few of us decided to head out in the direction of Brandberg. As we made our way down to the car park, we saw a White-tailed Shrike. We then drove parallel to the Erongo Mountains and stopped briefly at the Kahn River, where we had our best Herero Chat by Gareth Robbins sighting yet of a Marico Sunbird! Further along the way we stopped and had another look at a Pearl-spotted Owlet, Grey-backed Camaroptera, Black Cuckoo, Common Scimitarbill and a pair of Cardinal Woodpeckers. As the vegetation became more sparse and dry, we began to see a good number of Northern Black Korhaans and Temminck’s Coursers. We also had a few brief views of some Red-crested Korhaans. We came across a patch where we saw Spike-heeled, Stark’s and Sabota Larks.

It was then past midday and we still had one bird to look for, and after a short stop, we heard our first Benguela Long-billed Lark call. We got out the tour vehicle and approached the bird by foot and we actually got two very good sightings of this bird. Victorious, we drove back to the lodge where, en route, we got excellent views of Meerkats, Giraffe, Common Buzzard and better views of Red-crested Korhaans. As we arrived at the lodge car park area, the heavens opened and we experienced a small storm. After it cleared, we were collected and taken back to the lodge and we were fortunate to see a Rock Kestrel on the way back. During dinner, we got great looks at Freckled Nightjar sitting on a nearby boulder.

Our day began with breakfast at sunrise and we enjoyed a wonderful meal, with great views of Rosy-faced Lovebirds sitting in the tree in front of the restaurant. After breakfast, we made our way to the tour vehicle and proceeded towards . Our first stop was at a camping site in the small town of Omaruru, where we saw two Violet Woodhoopoes as well as brief views of a Woodland Kingfisher. Along the way, we saw a good variety of mammals, ranging from Black-faced Impala to Springbok, Red Hartebeest, Blue Wildebeest, Greater Kudu, Mountain and Plains Zebras, Giraffe and Oryx. We also saw a few birds, such as Lilac-breasted Rollers, Fork-tailed Drongos, Cape Crows and Namaqua Doves. Furthermore, a couple of young Leopard Tortoises were seen along the roadside, as well as some Dung Beetles moving their dung across the road. We finally arrived at our lodge in the Dolomite Mountains, and had dinner during a large storm. Today we left our beautiful lodge in the mountains and made the long journey from the Western side of the Etosha National Park to Okaukuejo Rest camp, which is more centrally located. Our day started with Lions roaring at first light but by the time we got to the waterhole below the lodge, the lions had moved on. We Hartman’s Mountain Zebra by Gareth Robbins continued with the 192km drive, managing to locate large numbers of Springbok, Red Hartebeest, Common Wildebeest, Giraffe, South African Ground Squirrel and Steenbok. We also managed to see one large Elephant bull in the distance! Our first new bird for the day was an Eastern Clapper Lark and whilst we were watching the bird displaying, we saw a large group of Double-banded Coursers congregated around one small, rocky area. We continued to make our way across the reserve and paid a visit to a number of waterholes. Unfortunately, due to so much water being available, the have too many choices, meaning that the waterholes are not very popular.

By the end of the day, we entered some semi-desert habitat and were very lucky to see a few Pink- billed Larks. Throughout the day, we had sightings of Northern Black Korhaan, Kori Bustard, Red- crested Korhaans, Lapped-faced Vultures, Tawny Eagles, Bateleur, Scaly-feathered and Red- headed Finches, Shaft-tailed Whydahs, Monotonous and Red-capped Larks, Black-winged Kite and a single Secretarybird! One of the more interesting sightings we had was of a female Boomslang that had got into a Sociable Weaver colony, and posed gracefully for us. We finally arrived at Okaukuejo Rest Camp and made our way down to the waterhole, where we saw absolutely no animals apart for the resident Sociable Weavers, a Crimson- breasted Shrike and an Ashy Tit. After our buffet dinner, we re-visited the waterhole and had a few decent looks at some Rufous- cheeked Nightjars catching insects attracted to the large floodlights. We went to bed with the faint calls of the Lions in the distance and the screeching calls of the Western Barn Owl flying above our rooms. Eastern Clapper Lark by Gareth Robbins

We stopped a few times at some eroded sand banks and watched Red-faced Mousebirds, Grey Go-Away-birds and Emerald-spotted Wood-Doves eating soil from the sandbank. Birds eat these sand particles to assist with digestion in the gizzard section of the stomach. We also saw African Darters, Reed Cormorants, Western Cattle Egrets, Hamerkop, African Fish Eagle and plenty of African Marsh Harriers.

We then made time to stop at a small inlet, where we saw one Long-toed Lapwing in and amongst a few Blacksmith Lapwings, as well as two Allen’s Gallinules. Shortly after this, Willem suddenly pointed out a Pel’s Fishing Owl that was sitting quietly in the tree near the edge of the bank. We decided to park the boat and get a closer look, which we all did, and indeed we got excellent views of this normally hard-to-see bird. This was definitely one of the top birds of our trip! Just before dinner, we took a short walk out to the first wetlands and saw Senegal Coucal, Rufous-bellied Heron and African Openbills, and had excellent, close views of Square- tailed Nightjars. We left our lodge in the Mahango Game Reserve Hippopotamus by Gareth Robbins and drove across the wetland, successfully managing to get more looks at Lesser Jacana, as well as African Openbills, Luapula Cisticola and a murmuration of Black-winged Pratincoles. We also got great views of Meyer’s Parrots as we neared the turnoff leading back to Divundu. Just before entering the Bwabwata National Park, we had our last look at the Okavango River from the bridge, managing to get better views of Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters. We then headed back downstream and when we got back to our lodge, we were welcomed by a Yellow-breasted Apalis and Hartlaub’s Babblers.

After lunch and a short break, we went out on a game drive and tried our best to find some form of wetland. Unfortunately, due to the continuous rising in the water levels, we only managed to see Coppery-tailed Coucal, Common Greenshank, African Stonechat, Squacco Herons, Cape Wagtails, Common Waxbills and Brown Firefinches. After the game drive, we arrived back at the lodge and took a short walk, and managed to get much better views of Collared Sunbird. We then met at dusk and got fantastic sightings of Swamp Nightjar as it flew right past the entire group.

We left our beautiful lodge on the Zambezi River after breakfast and made our way back to the tour vehicle using the lodge’s boats, and got the best views of Rufous-bellied Heron on the trip. We then boarded the tour vehicle and drove back to Katima Mulilo, where we visited local woodland and had superb views of two Racket-tailed Rollers Bradfield’s Hornbill by Judi Helsby as they put on a display for us before one bird perched in the tree for us and we all managed to get some great photos and scope views of the bird. On a track further along the way, we were also able to pick up views of Kurrichane Thrush, Crested Barbet and a brief view of an African Hobby as it flew above us. We made our way to and Zambian Borders and after a few hours with some interesting queuing situations, we were eventually in Zambia.

Our next challenge was to get through the next 100km of extremely shocking road conditions and bone-shattering potholes. The only advantage of the potholes was that we were able to drive slow enough to view some birds, and along the way, we saw Great and Intermediate Egrets, White- winged Widowbirds, Swainson’s Francolin and Levaillant’s Cuckoo. We finally neared Livingstone and were delayed by many road blocks, so we ended up searching the best locally-known spot for the Collared Palm Thrush. It did not take us long to see a bird sitting right at the top of the palm before landing in a nearby tree, and then we were visited by another bird. We then checked into our hotel in Livingstone and had a wonderful dinner and completed the checklist as a group for the last time. Today was our last day of the tour, and visiting Vitoria Falls would be the best way to end it! After breakfast, we drove down to the “meaning of Victoria Falls” and boy did it live up to its name! It was about time we benefitted Water Thick-knee by Judi Helsby

Trip Report – RBL Namibia, Botswana & Zambia - Overland I 2017 14 ______from the masses of water we had encountered throughout the tour. Trumpeter Hornbills, Red- winged Starlings and African Black Swifts were seen at the falls and after our memorable experience, we headed down to a lodge where we saw a Little Sparrowhawk sitting in the tree. After a brilliant morning, we drove back to the hotel and were transferred to Livingstone Airport, where we bid our farewells and went our separate ways.
