TR~S NOVAS ESPÉCIES DE DENDROPHRYNISCUS JIMÉNEZ DE LA ESPADA DAS REGiÕES SUDESTE E SUL DO BRASIL (AMPHIBIA, ANURA, BUFONIDAE) Eugenio Izecksohn 1 ABSTRACT. THREE NEW SPECIES OF DENDROPHRYNISCUS J1MÉNEZ DE LA ESPADA FROM SOUTHEAST AND SOUTH REGIONS OF BRAZIL (AMPHIBIA, ANURA, BUFONIDAE). Dendrophryniscus carvalhoi, sp.n. from Espírito Santo, D. berthalutzae, sp.n. from Santa Catarina, and D. slawiarskyi, sp.n. from Paraná, Brazil, are described and considered to be related to D. brevipollicatus Jiménez de la Espada. KEY WORDS. Amphibia, Anura, Bufonidae, taxonomy of frogs o gênero Dendrophryniscus Jiménez de la Espada, reúne pequenos anuros de corpo relativamente alongado, com colorido pardacento, que pa recem habitar exclusivamente florestas. Menos vistosos que a espécies dos gêneros afins Ate/opus Duméril & Bibron e Me/anophryniscus Gallardo, muito homogêneos em seu aspecto, com voz débil e quase sempre ocultos em bainhas de folhas ou disfarçados no chão das matas, talvez por isso tenham permanecido pouco estudados. A descontinuidade na distribuição do gênero é acentuada, sendo conhe cidos alguns representantes nas florestas do sudeste e sul brasileiros e outros na Bacia Amazônica, no Brasil, Guiana, Colômbia e Equador. Dendrophryniscus brevipollicatus Jiménez de la Espada, do sudeste bra sileiro, como deve ocorrer com algumas formas afins, tem ontogênese es pecializada, estando suas larvas adaptadas a vida em bromeliáceas (LUTZ, 1932; CARVALHO, 1949; IZECKSOHN & CRUZ, 1972); D. leucomystax Izecksohn, D. minutus Melin e provavelmente D. bokemtanni Izecksohn criam suas larvas em poças de água acumuladas no solo (DUELLMAN & L YNCH, 1969; IZECKSOHN & CRUZ, 1972; IZECKSOHN, no prelo). Amazon Alive! A decade of discovery 1999-2009 The Amazon is the planet’s largest rainforest and river basin. It supports countless thousands of species, as well as 30 million people. © Brent Stirton / Getty Images / WWF-UK © Brent Stirton / Getty Images The Amazon is the largest rainforest on Earth. It’s famed for its unrivalled biological diversity, with wildlife that includes jaguars, river dolphins, manatees, giant otters, capybaras, harpy eagles, anacondas and piranhas. The many unique habitats in this globally significant region conceal a wealth of hidden species, which scientists continue to discover at an incredible rate. Between 1999 and 2009, at least 1,200 new species of plants and vertebrates have been discovered in the Amazon biome (see page 6 for a map showing the extent of the region that this spans). The new species include 637 plants, 257 fish, 216 amphibians, 55 reptiles, 16 birds and 39 mammals. In addition, thousands of new invertebrate species have been uncovered. Owing to the sheer number of the latter, these are not covered in detail by this report. This report has tried to be comprehensive in its listing of new plants and vertebrates described from the Amazon biome in the last decade. But for the largest groups of life on Earth, such as invertebrates, such lists do not exist – so the number of new species presented here is no doubt an underestimate. We sampled free-living marbled water frogs Telmatobius marmora- tus (Anura: Leptodactylidae) from Isla del Sol, Bolivia, for Bd using skin swabs and quantitative polymerase chain reactions. We detected Bd on 44% of T. marmoratus sampled. This is the first record of Bd in amphibians from waters associated with Lake Titicaca, Bolivia. These results fur- ther confirm the presence of Bd in Bolivia and substantiate the potential threat of this pathogen to the Critically Endangered, sympatric Titicaca water frog T. culeus and other Andean amphibians. We studied the status of toads of the genus Rhinella collected in the southern Cordillera Azul, central Peru. Molecular analysis of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene revealed them to be members of the recently proposed Rhinella festae species group, and sister to R. lilyrodriguezae, a species known from northern areas of the Cordillera Azul. The new specimens are differentiated from R. lilyrodriguezae and other species of Rhinella by substantial genetic divergence in the studied gene fragment (> 5% uncorrected pairwise distance) and several qualitative morphological characters, provid- ing combined evidence for a divergent evolutionary lineage. We consequently describe the specimens from the southern part of the Cordillera Azul in Departamento Huánuco as a new species, Rhinella chullachaki sp. -

Conservation of Telmatobius Species: T. scrocchii and T. culeus By Anna Martinez Conservation of Telmatobius Species: T. scrocchii and T. culeus Introduction: The Telmatobius Family Telmatobius frogs are endemic to South America’s Andes mountain range, distributed across Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, and Peru (Angulo, 2008) (Fig 1 & 2). Many species are purely aquatic and live in small streams or lakes. Others can be partially terrestrial as adults, but their eggs and larvae are completely dependent on aquatic conditions. Their clutch can be 80 to 500 eggs, however they tend to have low reproduction rates. Eggs are laid on rocks with in the water but little is known about their development. Adults tend to live hidden in debris and vegetation, under rocks, and within natural muddy cavities. Though adults may be found resting on rock during the day, most adults are most active at night (Barrionuevo, 2008). Along with their endemism and aquatic lifestyles, Telmatobius species can be found in high altitude habitats. This gives rise to evolutionary adaptations in low oxygen environments. The T.culeus has been a focus of studies observing unique oxygen exchange techniques and will be described further within this paper.
