Chuck sounded like the man to speak to, but he was a challenge to locate. I found an address in Superior, Wisconsin, and wrote a letter but never got a reply. This was before the Internet became the “go to” resource that it is today, so I had to do a little more digging and eventually located an address in Roseburg, Oregon. Another letter was sent and this time I got a reply. Chuck sent me details of his lifetime in baseball and a stack of photos, many of which appeared in my book. Chuck also invited me to give him a call to discuss wartime baseball in more detail. It was an offer I couldn’t refuse and led to a lengthy conversation that filled so many gaps in relation to what happened with US Army baseball in Britain and France The following pages are the story of between 1943 and 1945.
