Mayberry Days Sponsor Opportunities MAYBERRY DAYS SPONSOR OPPORTUNITIES The Mayberry Days Festival is committed to family entertainment and the promotion of the values presented on The Andy Griffith Show . The event is held the last full weekend in September, just before the annual anniversary date of the show. It has become a reunion for fans and is the site of TAGSRWC’s (The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club’s) annual meeting. The festival began in 1990 as a one day celebration of the 30th anniversary of The Andy Griffith Show in Andy Griffith’s hometown of Mount Airy. The Surry Arts Council, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, sponsors the Mayberry Days Festival and uses funds raised to promote the arts in Mount Airy and the surrounding area. This year is the 30 th Annual Mayberry Days Festival and the 59 th Anniversary of The Andy Griffith Show . The festival will be celebrated all week long with events beginning on Monday and ending on Sunday. Each year the Surry Arts Council hosts well-known personalities who were associated with The Andy Griffith Show . These have included Doug and Rodney Dillard, Maggie Peterson, Betty Lynn, George Lindsey, James Best, Elinor Donahue, Howard Morris, Joy Elison, LeRoy McNees, George Spence, Jackie Joseph, Elizabeth MacRae, Cindi and Andy Griffith, Larry Jones (TV Land President), composer Earle Hagen, writers Harvey Bullock and Jack Elinson, Clint Howard, Keith Thibodeaux, Dennis Rush, and many more. There are activities during Mayberry Days that range from a golf tournament, concerts, a pie-eating contest, an apple peel contest, checker tournaments and trivia contests to just drinking a bottle of pop and eating a hot dog – or even better, a pork chop sandwich or ground steak. The festival has become a unique opportunity to share Mount Airy and our area. It is not “anywhere USA.” The streets are not blocked off and guests are encouraged to wander around town and enjoy the area that inspired Andy Griffith during his youth. “Mayberry Days” has been featured on the front page of the New York Times; it has been selected multiple times as one of the “Top 20 Events in the Southeast;” it has been featured on all major television networks and in numerous magazines. Mayberry Days serves as an important economic catalyst during a time of economic correction in Mount Airy, a community that was formerly dependent on textiles, furniture, and tobacco. The wine industry is booming in Surry County and tourism is vital to its economic health. The festival provides an opportunity to share our local music heritage and traditions, our Mayberry connections, as well as the beauty of our community that is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The presence of Mayberry Days on the Surry Arts Council website (maintained by a volunteer Mayberry fan) provides an opportunity for folks outside of Mount Airy to enjoy and inquire about America’s favorite hometown. The Mayberry Days Facebook page has over 136,000 followers. The festival attracts over 35,000 fans and the economic impact is over $5,000,000. GUNSMOKE TV CAST AND DETAILS Premiered: September 10, 1955, on CBS Rating: TV-PG Premise: This landmark adult Western centered on Marshal Matt Dillon of Dodge City. John Wayne turned down the lead, suggesting James Arness (who remained for its entire run). Originating on radio (with William Conrad as Dillon), it moved to TV in September 1955. Its popularity spawned a number of copycats, but none would enjoy the longevity (and few the consistent quality) of this classic. Airing for 20 years, it's TV's longest running prime-time drama (a record that `Law & Order' is currently chasing). "People either inspire you, or they drain you. Pick them wisely." - Hans F. Hansen Monday, November 11, 2019 Printable Copy or Audio Version Morning Summary: Stocks are coming off their fifth straight week of gains as third- quarter earnings season begins to wind down. Close to 90% of S&P 500 companies have now reported results with approximately 75% topping analyst expectations. Earnings for S&P 500 companies are now on track to decline -2.4%, improving from a decline of -2.8% at the start of last week. Bulls are also pointing to the correction in the yield curve, with all longer-term debt again now yielding more than short-dated for the first time since November 2018. If you recall, the yield curve inversion was raising serious alarms about a looming recession this past summer, that has since subsided. As for Chinese trade headlines, we continue to digest mixed messages with President Trump now saying he has not agreed to suspend tariffs on Chinese goods, countering news reports last week that suggested a rollback was part of the "Phase 1" trade deal.

  • Henrietta Porter in the Television Series Trackdown
A Woman with Influence: Henrietta Porter in the Television Series Trackdown WILLIAM HAMPES In the 1950’s women on television tended to be relegated to traditional domestic roles as contented housewives: Father Knows Best (1954-1963), Leave it to Beaver (1957-1963), The Donna Reed Show (1959-1966), etc. This emphasis on domesticity was found throughout the culture at the time because although “the actual lived experience of domesticity was fraught with problems, the family ideal still promised material benefits and personal stability in a confusing world.” (Spigel 34). Even when women were single, self-supporting and competent in their chosen profession, they conformed to the traditional feminine role as, for example, in Our Miss Brooks (1952-1956) (Dow xvii). Conflicts that occurred tended to center around the normal growing pains that the couple’s children were having rather than any fundamental disagreements between husband and wife. Female resistance against gender roles was mainly confined to wives disobeying or disagreeing with their husbands, typically in shows about childless couples where conflict could not focus on the children, such as I Married Joan (1952-1955), The Honeymooners (1955-1956), and I Love Lucy (1951-1957).1 In regards to Joan and Lucy their rebellion against their respective husbands consisted of their wacky, unrealistic and unsuccessful attempts to seek employment outside of their marriage (Spigel 174- 177). Alice Kramden of the Honeymooners was different. As the long-suffering wife of her often-irresponsible husband, Ralph, she did not pull any verbal punches when she was angry and frustrated with Ralph’s inconsiderate schemes and ridiculous 1 It is true that Lucy and Ricky gave birth to little Ricky, but he was not born until the second season and appeared in only eight episodes in the first four years of the series.
