Here Old Trafford News launches a major new campaign to change that forever. By Paula Atkinson

On 5th May 1882, Sylvia Pankhurst, daughter of Dr Richard and Emmeline Pankhurst, was born at 1 Drayton Terrace, Old Trafford, Manchester. Her equally famous sister Christabel had been born in the same house a year earlier. The street no longer exists, but OTN has pinpointed the exact location to the corner of Chester Road and Talbot Road. In modern terms, the birthplace of two of British history’s greatest women was the car park of the bingo hall opposite Trafford Bar.

Sylvia, Christabel and Emmeline Pankhurst were the key figures in the battle for women’s suffrage. They are widely regarded as among the most important women in British history and in the global struggle for women’s rights. And yet no local monument exists to Old Trafford’s greatest daughters. There is no plaque, no memorial, no museum. No streets or parks are named in their honour. Very few Old Trafford residents are even aware of this part of our history. On the 130th anniversary of Sylvia’s birth, Old Trafford News launched a major campaign to put that right. We will be lobbying and negotiating with Trafford Council and other local providers, seeking to create an appropriate and lasting memorial to the family. OTN contacted Sylvia’s granddaughter, Dr Helen Pankhurst, who continues her family’s great work to this day as an ambassador for the development charity Care International. She was delighted to learn of our campaign.

“I think initiatives like this are important in that they allow people today to honour past acts of commitment and courage,” she told us. “They create a link between the present and the past; between a particular local area – in this case Old Trafford, and the national suffragette campaign - which itself is part of a global movement for women’s rights.”

To begin our campaign, we launch a short series of articles recalling the life and work of the Pankhursts, beginning with Sylvia.

When Emmeline Goulden to the dingy streets of Ancoats, committed socialist and saw the married the political activist and Gorton, Hulme, and other struggle for women’s rights as solicitor Dr Richard Pankhurst in working-class districts and stood part of a broader campaign for a 1880, they moved into his Old on a chair or soap-box, pleading socialist society. COMMUNITY VIEWS from OTN’s photography course Top: Old Trafford Trinity. Old Trafford Football Ground is known worldwide as the home of Manchester United. People always ask ‘do you live near the ground’ when I tell them where I live. It’s quite satisfying to be associated with a landmark that is as well known as the Eiffel Tower, the Taj Mahal and the Leaning Tower of Pisa! Roy Appleby. Below: Masjid-E-Hidayah Mosque. The role of religious institutions in Old Trafford is very important as they are peace loving people. Trafford Council should fund more multi-cultural events and sports activities for young people in the area. This will improve quality of life for the next gen- erations living in the area. M.I. Longford Park dates back to 1857 when Longford Hall and its grounds were constructed and laid out by John Rylands, the famous cotton merchant. The site became a public park after it was purchased by Stretford Council in 1911 and opened in 1912. It remains one of the nicest parks in which to spend some time, particularly in the old rock garden. Roy Appleby
