BEASON3 ABSTRACT.—The Black Swift (Cypseloides niger) was first discovered in Colorado in 1880, yet information on prey items taken by this species in Colorado is very rare. We collected and identified prey items of Black Swifts from three breeding locations in Colorado during August over a seven-year period (2006–2012) and identified 5,371 insects representing 10 orders and 54 families. We compare our data with historical Black Swift prey item information from other locations in North America. These data indicate that Black Swifts forage on a wider array of insect taxa and sizes than previously reported in other parts of its range. Received 7 October 2014. Accepted 31 December 2014. Collins Department of Biological Sciences, California State University, Long Beach, CA 90840, [email protected] Abstract.—Reproductive activities of White-throated Swifts (Aeronautes saxatalis) were examined from 1997 to 2006 at two nest sites in a human-made structure in southern California. The start of egg-laying was from 27 April to 30 May and hatching of the first chick ranged from 21 May to 23 June; all chicks had fledged by late July, 42–43 days after hatching. The annual molt of adults began in early June and broadly overlapped with the chick-rearing period. Year to year adult survival was minimally 73.9% and nesting pairs showed strong mate and nest site fidelity; pairs reused nests up to five consecutive years. The composition of the arthropod food (insects and spiders) brought to nestlings was different in the periods 1997–2000 and 2001–2004 but prey size was similar in both periods. The onset of breeding was more varied from year to year than the start of the primary feather molt suggesting differing environmental stimuli for these important components of the annual cycle. The White-throated Swift (Aeronautes saxatalis) is a widespread and familiar element of the southern California avifauna. Its staccato chattering vocalization often announces its presence, searching for aerial prey high overhead, long before visual contact is made. In recent decades, this swift has utilized human-made structures as buildings, bridges and highway overpasses for nesting and roosting (Collins and Johnson 1982; Ryan and Collins 2000).

    Notes on birds in the Lubango Bird Skin Collection, Angola 16-18 January 2013 by Michael Mills During January 2013 I had the privilege of visiting the Lubango Bird Skin Collection in Angola for three days, to study some of the 40000 bird skins in the collection. This was the first step at studying various taxonomic questions related to Angolan birds, and clarifying various identification questions. Some notes based on this visit follow: 1. I spent a while looking at all the swift specimens, hoping to find something unusual among the Common Swift Apus apus specimens. There is only one African Black Swift Apus barbatus specimen, not even from Angola, and none of the Common Swifts look untoward, all collected in the period Oct-Jan. The darker mantle of African Black Swift was the most noticeable feature differentiating these two species. 2. Bradfield’s Swift Apus bradfieldi and Mottled Swift Tachymarptis aequatorialis appeared to be very similar in plumage pattern and colouration, with basically equal amount of scalloping, so the only difference would be size. Mottled Swift was the same ground colour throughout, quite brownish, and was collected mostly from the mouth of the Dande River, so are may be the large brown swifts I see over the Kwanza, Keve and Longa Rivers. 3. In agreement with Brooke (1971), I could find no difference in morphology between Horus Swift Apus horus and so-called Loanda Swift Apus [horus] toulsoni, which has subspecies toulsoni and fuscobrunneus (south-west Angola only). Birds collected from the same area in Cabinda displayed white rumps (horus) in some and brown rumps (toulsoni) in others.
