www.the-criterion.com The Criterion: An International Journal in English ISSN (0976-8165) Girish Karnad: A Man and Artist—Evolution of His Dramatic Genius Dr. Krishna Singh Girish Raghunath Karnad is a playwright, poet, actor, director, critic, translator and cultural administrator all rolled into one. He has been rightly called the “renaissance man” (Kalidas & Merchant.”Renaissance Man”); whose celebrity is based on decades of prolific and consistent output on native soil. He belongs to a generation that has produced Dharamveer Bharati, Mohan Rakesh and Vijay Tendulker who have created a national theatre for modern India which is the legacy of his generation. Karnad is the most famous as a playwright. His plays written in Kannad have been widely translated into English and all major Indian languages. Karnad’s plays are written neither in English, except few, in which he dreamed of earning international literary fame, nor in his mother tongue Konkani. Instead they are composed in his adopted language Kannad thereafter translated by himself into English—a language of adulthood. When Karnad started writing plays, Kannad literature was highly influenced by the renaissance in Western literature. Writers would choose a subject which looked entirely alien to manifestation of native soil. Conflicting ideologies, political freedom of India, modernity versus indigenous traditions supplied the specific backdrop to write plays. During his formative years, Karnad went through diverse influences that went long way into shaping his dramatic taste and genius. The earliest influence was that of the Natak Company that was in vogue in Sirsi. The Yakshagana plays which he used to see with the servants also appealed to him by their buffoonery and horseplay. -

University, Nanded (MS) INDIA (MS) INDIA A drama as part of literature is admittedly a convenient way for showing social problems of society in which story is told to the audience through the performance on the stage by the actors. The present paper aims to study Vijay Tendulkar’s ideas about marriage family in his play Kamala. The play is based on a real life incident. Kamala is a play that elucidates the predicament of women. The play explores how women have been treated by male counterparts. Women are oppressed, misused, exploited, and enslaved. Kamala shows how women are used as a means for fulfillment of men's lust, ambition, fame, and money. The paper presents the horrible exploitation of women in the rural area of India where women can be bought from a flesh market .It aims to show the reality of life of women in modern India especially the concept of marriage and family. This paper will focus on the theme of exploitation which is found in the marital relationship in this play. Key Words: Vijay Tendulkar, Marriage, Family, Exploitation, Kamala, Drama, Women. What they do not say is that women’s lives are also largely unrecorded. Women, and the work they do, slip through memory’s net leaving large gaps in our collective consciousness about challenges faced and mastered, discoveries made and celebrated, collaborations forged and valued. Combating this pervasive amnesia is not an easy task. This book is a beginning in another direction, an attempt to try and construct the professional lives of four of Mumbai’s women (where the discussion has ventured into the personal lives of these women, it has only been in relation to the professional or to their public images). And who better to attempt this construction than young people on the verge of building their own professional lives? Thakar Ph.D Research Scholar, Faculty of Social Science & Humanities (English), Pacific University (PAHERU), Udaipur, Rajasthan. Abstract :- Vijay Dhondopant Tendulkar (7th January 1928 – 19th May 2008) was a leading Indian playwright, movie and television writer, literary essayist, political journalist and social commentator primarily in Marathi. His plays have been translated and performed in many Indian languages. By providing insight into major social events and political upheavals during his life, he has become one of the strongest radical political voices in Indian literature in recent times. His early struggle for survival and living for some time in chawls in Mumbai provided him first-hand experience about the life of urban lower middle-class. Many of his plays derived inspiration from real life incidents or social upheavals, which provides clear light on harsh realities of the Indian society. Key words : Concern, Middle-class, Radical, Realities, Social, Upheavals Tendulkar is internationally known as a path-breaking theatre writer. He was the playwright of Rangayan, a theatre group which gave experimental Marathi theatre a completely new direction. He was among the handful of playwrights along with Girish Karnad, Habib Tanvir, Badal Sircar etc. who provided a new content and form to Indian theatre, writing about contemporary issues and themes in a novel way. In an interview with Sumit Saxena Tendulkar himself has said, I have not written about the hypothetical pain or created an imaginary world of sorrow. -

His rise as a playwright in 1960s, marked the coming of age of Modern Indian playwriting in Kannada, just as Badal Sarkar did in Bengali, Vijay Tendulkar in Marathi, and Mohan Rakesh in Hindi.[1] He is a recipient[2] of the 1998 Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honour conferred in India. For four decades Karnad has been composing plays, often using history and mythology to tackle contemporary issues. He has translated his plays into English and has received acclaim.[3] His plays have been translated into some Indian languages and directed by directors like Ebrahim Alkazi, B. V. Karanth, Alyque Padamsee, Prasanna, Arvind Gaur, Satyadev Dubey, Vijaya Mehta, Shyamanand Jalan and Amal Allana.[3] He is active in the world of Indian cinema working as an actor, director, and screenwriter, in Hindi and Kannada flicks, earning awards along the way. He was conferred Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by the Government of India and won four Filmfare Awards where three are Filmfare Award for Best Director - Kannada and one Filmfare Best Screenplay Award. Early life and education Girish Karnad was born in Matheran, Maharashtra. His initial schooling was in Marathi. In Sirsi, Karnataka, he was exposed to travelling theatre groups, Natak Mandalis as his parents were deeply interested in their plays.[4] As a youngster, Karnad was an ardent admirer of Yakshagana and the theater in his village.[] He earned his Bachelors of Arts degree in Mathematics and Statistics, from Karnatak Arts College, Dharwad (Karnataka University), in 1958. -

Sangeetha Head, P.G Department of English Thiruvalluvar University Constituent College of Art and Science Kallakurichi 606202, Tamilnadu,( India) Abstract: Earlier Dramatic works didn’t get much popularity in Indian literature and somewhere it was overshadowed by the fame of poetry and novel writings. Further twentieth century saw a great enrichment of drama writings in Indian literary world. Drama started to appear both in writings and theatrical forms and received wide readership and audience during this time. Many prominent dramatist appears in 20th century and contributed miscellaneous wonderful dramatic pieces such as Girish Karnad, Vijay Tendulkar, Utpul Dutt, Bijan Bhattacharya, Manoj Mitra, Badal Sircar and others. Their writings replete with multitude subjects and themes i.e. historical, social, political, cultural and many contemporary issues. In contemporary period Mahesh Dattani, Asif Currimbhoy, Bhimsen Sahni, Shiv k. Kumar and Cyrus Mistry got significant place in Indian drama for their remarkable contribution. Mahesh Dattani is one of the dramatists who is known for his striking subjects that reflects the contemporary societal, political and cultural problems of the Indian society. Dattani plays largely focus on the urban life issues that is noteworthy characteristic of his writings.
