on: Sunday, the 18th January, 2015 at: 6.30 p.m. NALANDA'S BHARATA MUNI SAMMAN Dedicated to the preservation and propagation of Indian dance in particular and Indian in general from its founding in 1966 Nalanda Dance Research Centre has unswervingly trodden on its chosen path with single minded determination. Nalanda has always upheld the pricelessness of all that is and her great ancient culture which consists of the various , visual arts, the mother of all languages Sanskrit and Sanskritic studies , the religio- philosophical thought and other co-related facets. Being a highly recognized research centre, Nalanda recognizes and appreciates all those endeavours that probe deep into the all encompassing cultural phenomena of this great country. Very naturally these endeavours come from most dedicated individuals who not only delve into this vast ocean that is Indian culture but also have the intellectual calibre to unravel, re-interpret and re-invent this knowledge and wisdom to conform with their own times. From 2011 Nalanda has initiated a process of honouring such individuals who have acquired iconic status. By honouring them Nalanda is honouring India on behalf of all Indians.

Rajkumar Singhajit Singh (Dance) Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj San g eet M ar t an d Pan d it Jas raj 's achievements are beyond compare more so because vocal music is the most intimate and direct medium according to India's musical treatise and tradition. And almost beyond belief is also the fact that he has carved out his monumental global following without depriving his many million domestic admirers. He has been passionately loyal to his soil, while his music has scaled ethereal heights all over the planet. He has single-handedly paved the way for Indian vocal classical music to resonate across the world. Perfect diction, clarity in sur (musical notes), and gayaki (creative musical progression), command in all aspects of laya and rhythm, depth of composition and an unmistakable interplay between notes and words to evoke the desired mood and emotion, are the hallmark of Panditji's music. This sensitivity, added to the pure classical approach, has given his singing a lyrical quality, the quintessential of the Mewati tradition of singing. Mahesh Elkunchwar whose influence is seminal on Indian Theatre, and in particular , is known for his innovative spirit and to quote Shri ,' He stands unsurpassed in modern Indian theatre for his emotional sweep, intellectual rigour, and subtlety'. His outstanding body of plays is known for its wide ranging themes - the passage of time and mortality,identity and sexuality,religious tension and gender issues,human bond and alienation- ; classic concerns of great works of literature. Diverse in thematic and stylistic content, the plays symbolise the dramatic vision and skill of a man who is a towering presence in Modern Indian Theatre Mahesh Elkunchwar made his presence felt in 1970 with his very first play 'Holi' and has remained active till date. One of the most translated and performed playwrights in India, he is the recipient of many prestigious awards. including , the award, the and the Brittingham Fellowship, University of Wisconsin, USA. Known for great mastery of the art of Manipuri dance and complete dedication to it he has distinguished himself as an outstanding performer, choreographer, scholar and artiste of great creative ability. His have received tremendous appreciation for elegance, dignity, purity, variety and originality. As a teacher he has trained many eminent Manipuri dancers both in and outside of Manipur some of whom have received national awards including Sangeet Natak Akademi Award , Bismilla Khan Purashkar of the SNA and Sahitya Kala Parishad Samman. Trained in different aspects of Manipuri performing arts including Jagoi, Cholom and Thang Ta, he is well equipped for his role as a creative choreographer. Known for creative original work in Manipuri dance he has choreographed fifty ballets and numerous group and solo dance items which have received international acclaim. As a scholar his book and articles on Manipuri dance have been valuable reference materials on the subject. His regular lec-dems in schools and colleges in India and abroad have been widely appreciated. NALANDA DANCE RESEARCH CENTRE – A UNIQUE DANCE INSTITUTION Nalanda is the only dance institute in the country which is recognised as a research centre by the Ministry of Science and Technology Govt. of India (SIRO) for the past 30 years. Nalanda is primarily engaged in fulfilling three basic aims: 1) preservation of traditional classical dance styles in their formal purity by imparting training through the traditional “guru-shishya parampara” method, (teacher-taught tradition) 2) rejuvenation and adaptation of training methods to meet scientific and technological demands of the fast changing contemporary society and 3) conducting research projects that enhance the understanding, appreciation and knowledge about dance not only as a cultural phenomenon but also as an adjunct to human development. Rejuvenation of Mohini Attam at Nalanda: This is a unique and very important Department of Nalanda. The dance style was almost forgotten at the turn of the present century. Dr. and Nalanda have played a very significant role in not only rehabilitating this dance style but, more importantly, in creating technically sound courses of study for beginners as well at the University level.
