Oakland Nurseries Inc Mohican Viburnum Mohican Viburnum Viburnum lantana 'Mohican' Height: 7 feet Spread: 8 feet Sunlight: Hardiness Zone: 3a Other Names: Wayfaring Tree, Wayfaring Bush Mohican Viburnum flowers Description: Photo courtesy of NetPS Plant Finder A splendid home garden shrub, featuring flat-topped clusters of creamy white flowers in spring and fruit which starts pink, changing to red and finally black in fall, holds color longer than the species; upright and neatly compact, tough and adaptable Ornamental Features Mohican Viburnum is covered in stunning creamy white flat-top flowers at the ends of the branches in mid spring. The tomato-orange fruits are held in abundance in spectacular clusters from mid summer to late fall. It has dark green foliage with gray undersides throughout the season. The large fuzzy pointy leaves turn an outstanding deep purple in the fall. Mohican Viburnum Photo courtesy of NetPS Plant Finder Landscape Attributes Mohican Viburnum is a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with a more or less rounded form. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition. This is a relatively low maintenance shrub, and should only be pruned after flowering to avoid removing any of the current season's flowers. It is a good choice for attracting birds to your yard, but is not particularly attractive to deer who tend to leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. It has no significant negative characteristics. It tends to fill out right to the ground and therefore doesn't necessarily require facer plants in front, and is suitable for planting under Mohican Viburnum fruit power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal Photo courtesy of NetPS Plant Finder conditions can be expected to live for 40 years or more. This shrub does best in full sun to partial shade. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. This is a selected variety of a species not originally from North America. Widely used in landscape plantings, these versatile plants offer diverse foliage, color- ful fruit and attractive flowers. Viburnums are relatively pest-free, but in some parts of the US the viburnum leaf beetle can be a serious pest in both landscape and natural settings. Potential diseases include bacterial leaf spot and powdery mildew. INSECTS Viburnum Leaf Beetle, Pyrrhalta viburni, is a leaf-feeding insect native to Europe and Asia. In North America, the beetle became established around Ottawa, Canada in the 1970’s and was first detected in the United States in Maine in 1994 and in New York in 1996. It has since spread through much of the northeastern US (15). Reports of viburnum leaf beetle in the Midwest include Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois (1) and Washington and British Columbia, Canada in the Pacific Northwest (7). The beetle is host-specific and feeds only on Viburnum, but there are preferences within the genus (6). Species with thick leaves tend to be more resistant and feeding is more likely to occur on plants grown in the shade (17). Feeding by both larvae and adults causes tattered leaves and may result in extensive defoliation – repeated defoliations can kill the plant.     PHYLOGENY AND PHYLOGENETIC TAXONOMY OF DIPSACALES, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO SINADOXA AND TETRADOXA (ADOXACEAE) MICHAEL J. DONOGHUE,1 TORSTEN ERIKSSON,2 PATRICK A. REEVES,3 AND RICHARD G. OLMSTEAD 3 Abstract. To further clarify phylogenetic relationships within Dipsacales,we analyzed new and previously pub- lished rbcL sequences, alone and in combination with morphological data. We also examined relationships within Adoxaceae using rbcL and nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences. We conclude from these analyses that Dipsacales comprise two major lineages:Adoxaceae and Caprifoliaceae (sensu Judd et al.,1994), which both contain elements of traditional Caprifoliaceae.Within Adoxaceae, the following relation- ships are strongly supported: (Viburnum (Sambucus (Sinadoxa (Tetradoxa, Adoxa)))). Combined analyses of C ap ri foliaceae yield the fo l l ow i n g : ( C ap ri folieae (Diervilleae (Linnaeeae (Morinaceae (Dipsacaceae (Triplostegia,Valerianaceae)))))). On the basis of these results we provide phylogenetic definitions for the names of several major clades. Within Adoxaceae, Adoxina refers to the clade including Sinadoxa, Tetradoxa, and Adoxa.This lineage is marked by herbaceous habit, reduction in the number of perianth parts,nectaries of mul- ticellular hairs on the perianth,and bifid stamens. The clade including Morinaceae,Valerianaceae, Triplostegia, and Dipsacaceae is here named Valerina. Probable synapomorphies include herbaceousness,presence of an epi- calyx (lost or modified in Valerianaceae), reduced endosperm,and distinctive chemistry, including production of monoterpenoids. The clade containing Valerina plus Linnaeeae we name Linnina. This lineage is distinguished by reduction to four (or fewer) stamens, by abortion of two of the three carpels,and possibly by supernumerary inflorescences bracts.     FSC Nettlecombe Court Nature Review 2014 Compiled by: Sam Tuddenham Nettlecombe Court- Nature Review 2014 Introduction The purpose of this report is to review and share the number of different species that are present in the grounds of Nettlecombe Court. A significant proportion of this data has been generated by FSC course tutors and course attendees studying at Nettlecombe court on a variety of courses. Some of the data has been collected for the primary purpose of species monitoring for nationwide conservation charities e.g. The Big Butterfly Count and Bee Walk Survey Scheme. Other species have just been noted by members or staff when out in the grounds. These records are as accurate as possible however we accept that there may be species missing. Nettlecombe Court Nettlecombe Court Field Centre of the Field Studies Council sits just inside the eastern border of Exmoor national park, North-West of Taunton (Map 1). The house grid reference is 51o07’52.23”N, 32o05’8.65”W and this report only documents wildlife within the grounds of the house (see Map 2). The estate is around 60 hectares and there is a large variety of environment types: Dry semi- improved neutral grassland, bare ground, woodland (large, small, man –made and natural), bracken dominated hills, ornamental shrubs (lawns/ domestic gardens) and streams. These will all provide different habitats, enabling the rich diversity of wildlife found at Nettlecombe Court. Nettlecombe court has possessed a meteorological station for a number of years and so a summary of “MET” data has been included in this report.

The weather spanned everything from reasonable to excellent, and we certainly made the best of it. Day 1 Wednesday 16th May We met in the bar of the Lambert Arms, introduced ourselves and got down to the business of discussing orchids. This orchid season had been an odd one so far, with several species delayed by the slow start to the year, but others earlier than expected. A couple of these earlier-than-usual species were Burnt Orchid and Man Orchid. As such, we tried something new and headed north to Hoo Bit in Hertfordshire. This patch of woodland and meadow has a lovely mixture of orchids, and it didn’t take us long to spot a number of Fly Orchids – within a few minutes we must have easily seen forty spikes. Twayblades were abundant, as were Common Spotted Orchid rosettes, which hinted at how the meadow must look in high summer.

Viburnums have been largely planted in the Arboretum and the abund- ant and conspicuous flowers now open on several of the species show the value of these plants for the decoration of parks and gardens. Vibur- nums are found in all the temperate parts of the northern hemisphere, the largest number of species growing in eastern Asia and in the eastern United States. The eastern American species, all things considered, are more valuable garden plants than those from other parts of the world, although there are a few Old World species which must be counted among the best of all hardy shrubs. Among these Old World species which cannot be spared from our collections are the European Wayfaring- tree, Viburnum Lantana, the Japanese and Chinese V. tomentosum, and the Japanese V. dilatatum. The first of these plants is a large shrub or small tree with blue-green foliage, large convex clusters of flowers which are followed by fruits, which when fully grown are at first bright red and then become black, fruits of the two colors being found together in the same cluster. This is a very hardy and vigorous plant and flowers here early in May. Viburnum tomentosum is a large flat-topped shrub with wide-spreading horizontal branches, and in Japan sometimes be- comes treelike in habit. It is one of the species in which the clusters of small perfect flowers are surrounded by a ring of abortive flowers with much enlarged pure white corollas.
