PRESS RELEASE - FINAL July 2015 i360 jacking tower takes attraction to new heights Progress at the Brighton i360 is on schedule, with the completion of the specially engineered temporary 60 metre high "jacking tower", which can be seen from far and wide. Said Eleanor Harris, CEO of Brighton i360, “If you have been on the seafront over the past couple of weeks, you can’t have missed the fact that the i360 construction is now well underway." David Marks, architect of the i360, said: “Building the i360 is a formidable engineering operation. The jacking tower is a vertical factory, a vertical production line. Individual steel cans go in at the bottom, and the finished tower comes out of the top, with the steel cans safely bolted together and clad in an eye-catching, diaphanous, aluminium veil.” The first few steel 'cans' were lifted into place conventionally using the giant 100 metre high crawler crane, nick-named T-Rex by the site team, but as the tower reaches higher into the sky, the jacking tower, designed by the i360's main contractor, Hollandia, will be used to lift the tower up, allowing a new can to be skidded in underneath. The new can will be bolted into place, and this process will then be repeated until all 17 cans are adjoined and the i360 tower is complete. Seven of the 17 steel cans are already in place – numbers one, two, three at the bottom, and the top four cans (cans 14, 15, 16 and 17) and the tower is now 64 meters high with the top just peeping out of the top of the jacking tower. -

Although it must be noted that, due to competing project pressures faced by the event organizers, BHOD 12 offered some 30% less events than in recent years. • Assessing visitor numbers for 2012 is difficult, due in part to the very busy nature of some venues. However, it is thought that overall, despite the number of activities on offer being reduced for 2012, approximately 10,000- 11,000 visitors attended the event, approaching the numbers attained in recent years. • Media coverage for the event was good, with exposure in, The Argus, various local amenity magazines and weekly publications, BBC local radio, RadioReverb, and the Discovering Places website, which publicised the HODs listings as a part of London 2012’s Cultural Olympiad campaign. -

Life beyond sight loss Blind Veterans UK since 1915 Service Users’ Guide Summary of Purpose Blind Veterans UK is a registered charity established in 1915 to offer assistance to ex-Service personnel with a visual impairment. The name and registered address of the charity is Blind Veterans UK, 12-14 Harcourt Street, London, W1H 4HD. The care services are provided at our Centre at Greenways, Ovingdean, Brighton, East Sussex, BN2 7BS and also at our new center in Llandudno. The Charity also has a training centre in Sheffield The Brighton Centre is currently the only care home that is owned by the Charity that caters for permanent residents, however, Llandudno offers respite care services. The Centre was originally opened in 1938 as a training and rehabilitation unit and a holiday hotel for Members. Over the years it has evolved to include long term and respite nursing and residential care. Admission to a permanent nursing home placement at the Brighton Centre follows a set process. Members may apply for a permanent care placement, but applications must be made via their welfare officer and each application is assessed and considered on an individual needs basis by the Admissions Panel. Our Aim The aim of the Charity is to encourage and assist its members to overcome their impairment and maintain the quality of life that they so richly deserve. To meet this aim, the Charity provides: • rehabilitation and training in employment and independent living skills • assistance towards the provision of welfare, medical and housing support to Members, their families and widows or widowers • a nursing and residential care home and training centre at Brighton and Llandudno • a training centre at Sheffield The aim of the Centre is to provide quality nursing and social care based on assessed need in order that residents may live as independently, actively and normally as possible, taking account of their wishes and capabilities. -

East Cliff Conservation Area Study and Enhancement Plan
EAST CLIFF CONSERVATION AREA STUDY AND ENHANCEMENT PLAN Director Of Environment September 2002 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 East Cliff was designated as a conservation area in February 1973 in recognition of it being an area of special architectural and historic interest, due to its clear association with the growth of Brighton as a Regency and Victorian seaside resort. The conservation area was confirmed as “outstanding” by the Secretary of State for the Environment in January 1974. It was then extended to the north in January 1977, June 1989 and June 1991. East Cliff covers an area of approximately 60 hectares and contains 589 statutory listed buildings plus 86 buildings on the local list. 1.2 This document contains an appraisal of the special architectural and historic interest of the conservation area, which is based upon a summary of the history and development of the area. It then goes on to recommend extensions to the boundary of the conservation area, under the terms of Section 69(2) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. Part five of the Study identifies buildings of local interest and buildings and sites which detract from the area. The Enhancement Plan aspect of this document has been prepared under Section 71 of the above-mentioned Act and sets out action that should be taken in order to preserve and enhance the special character and appearance of the area. 1.3 No estimate exists of the population of East Cliff as it covers parts of two separate wards and neighbourhoods. However, it has been estimated by the council that there are in the region of 10,500 households in the conservation area.
