BACKSCHEIDER STEVENS EMINENT SCHOLAR , AUBURN UNIVERSITY USA Eliza Haywood begins The History of Miss Betsy Thoughtless (1751) with a brief satire of Samuel Richardson’s great novel Clarissa (1747-48). She recalls the story of Pyramus and Thisbe, who exchanged love letters through a crevice in a wall as Clarissa and Lovelace had, then eloped, and then died tragically. In her comic opening, “Master Sparkish” had read the Pyramus and Thisbe story and, following its lead, “intrigues with” and ruins Betsy’s friend Miss Forward. How did Haywood know that myth? Or other myths that she incorporates into her novels, plays, and periodicals? The subtitle of Essays in Defence of the Female Sex: Custom, Education and Authority in Seventeenth-Century England points to the major battles that many women joined together to fight. There was, perhaps, the most at stake with “custom”; certainly it was the most powerful determinant of education and authority. Throughout the long eighteenth century, women waged a desperate struggle to have their sex primarily defined by what “custom” had done to them rather than by what patriarchal thinkers and common opinion believed that “nature” made them. They sought to reduce the number of limitations that sprung from the category “nature,” thereby allowing women to be defined as having greater capacities and, therefore, greater opportunities. They relentlessly expanded and then questioned “custom.” Sarah Fyge Egerton wrote, Shall I be one, of those obsequious Fools, / That square there [sic] lives, by Customs scanty Rules; […] That all the business of my life must be, / Foolish, dull Trifling, Formality. Mary, Lady Chudleigh, went further: “Those who are govern’d by Opinion, inslav’d to Custom, […] are Objects of Pity” 1. Education for men and women was dominated by “custom” normalized by conceptions of “nature.” In a time when women in the West have almost equal access to higher education and in the U.S.A. women outnumber men enrolled and x Foreword graduating at the undergraduate level, it is hard to remember seventeenth- and eighteenth-century women’s struggle for education. In fact, we should be alert to moments that reveal extraordinary learning and pause for a few seconds in silent tribute. Catherine Trotter Cockburn was a philosopher and polemicist praised for her defences of John Locke and her participation in debates now seen as crucial to the Enlightenment 2. Elizabeth Elstob was one of the most impressive Anglo-Saxon scholars of the century and assisted her brother and members of the Oxford Saxonists in such projects as an edition of the Anglo-Saxon laws while she completed the first grammar of Old English in English. Elizabeth Carter’s translation of Epictetus was the standard English translation until at least 1966. Elizabeth Montagu’s Essay on the Writing and Genius of Shakespear (1769) was a ground-breaking book characterized by deep learning and experience with performances of his plays. It included a “ferocious” defence of Shakespeare against Voltaire’s criticisms and took an approach still too rare today, considering plays as much as performance pieces as literary texts 3. Mary Robinson undertook impressive research before writing Sappho and Phaon (1796). One of the most striking things about women’s writing in the long eighteenth century is how clearly they understood the benefits of education. Few were as acerbic as Egerton, who wrote in 1703: They fear we should excel their sluggish Parts, / Should we attempt the Sciences and Arts, / Pretend they were design’d for them alone, / So keep us Fools to raise their own Renown; / Thus Priests of old their Grandeur to maintain, / Cry’d vulgar Eyes would sacred Laws Prophane. / […] / And shall we Women now sit tamely by, / Make no excursions in Philosophy, / Or grace our thoughts in tuneful Poetry? / We will our Rights in Learning’s World maintain, / Wits Empire, now, shall know a Female Reign; / Come all ye Fair, the great Attempt improve [….] 4. Perhaps accidentally, she is echoing Hannah Woolley’s “Hence I am induced to believe, we are debarred from the knowledge of human learning, lest our pregnant Wits should rival towring conceits of our insulting Lords and Masters” 5. Anne Finch, Countess of Winchilsea, complained that women were told that fashion, dancing, dressing, and activities such as card-playing composed their proper “accomplishments,” while “To write, or read, or think, or to enquire/ Wou’d cloud our beauty, and exaust [ sic ] our time”.     Jeanne Marie Le Prince de Beaumont (1711-1780): Biographical Essay for Chawton House Library and Women Writers By Peggy Schaller Jeanne Marie Le Prince de Beaumont created works of fiction and non-fiction, authored essays and epistolary novels,1 and published what many now consider the first educational journals for children. A French author who resided in England from 1748 to 1763, Beaumont2 is primarily recognized today for the children‟s tales she popularized in those journals written during her fifteen years as governess, pedagogue, and author in London. Her version of “Beauty and the Beast,” part of her famous Magasin des Enfants (Young Misses Magazine 1756), is described by Joan Hinde Stewart as “without doubt the best-known work of fiction published by any woman in the eighteenth century” (Gynographs 26). Her influence on such British educators as Lady Charlotte Finch, royal governess to the children of George III, and Sarah Trimmer, the turn-of-the-century author, publisher, and educator, has been well documented by Enlightenment scholars and modern day historians alike. In addition, the Young Misses Magazine bears a resemblance to Sarah Fielding‟s The Governess (1749) for its dialogue format between young girls and their governess. Unfortunately, attention to the magazines also often obscures her other work and so improperly pigeonholes her in the category of pedagogue, even though much of her writing broached a broad expanse of contemporary socio- political issues. In fact, Beaumont surpassed even her contemporary French women authors Emilie du Châtelet and Françoise de Graffigny in public influence, although modern day critics have made their names more recognizable to contemporary readers.

    367 Brentford High Street: Mrs Trimmer’s School Room Prepared by Val Bott and James Wisdom, on behalf of the Brentford and Chiswick Local History Society, October 2015. Summary. This building may be the only surviving purpose-built Georgian School of Industry in the UK. It was built in 1806, probably with accommodation for the school mistress, and the design of the building is significant in its own right. Its historic value also lies in its links with Sarah Trimmer. Mrs Trimmer started Sunday Schools in Brentford in 1786 and Schools of Industry in 1787, long before she had a building. Established teachers took “divisions” of children, either on Sundays for religious instruction and education, or during the week for work and education. The George Chapel was also used. The Girls’ School of Industry was financially successful and by 1806 Mrs Trimmer was able to build the schoolroom which brought all these Girls’ divisions together under one teacher. It was also used as a Sunday School. The Boys’ School of Industry, however, was less successful. Two of Mrs Trimmer’s daughters continued her work after her death in 1810. This inscription on the High Street facade of the Old School room commemorates the year in which Sunday Schools and Schools of Industry for poor children in Brentford were established and advertises the mechanisms for funding them. Origins The venture was inspired by the first such Sunday School established in Gloucester by Robert Raikes in 1780 and published in his newspaper in 1783. Raikes visited Brentford in 1787, was highly satisfied with what he saw and presented the children with Bibles1.

Nevertheless, one can speak of a “pedagogical discovery of the child.” Prior to the eighteenth century, children re- ceived little attention in society and were considered, if anything, an object to be schooled. They were of interest to religion and the church, to the family as labor power, and to the so- cial class to which they belonged from birth, but they were not considered in their own right or on their own terms. The resulting neglect of children’s education is clearly demonstrated by two indicators: the level of literacy, and the legal status of the child. In the European Middle Ages, only the Jews could claim a high level of literacy, since the boys had to learn to read and write Hebrew to understand the Torah. As late as the early eighteenth century, two-thirds of the French population was still illiterate and could neither read nor write. Even in the mid-nineteenth century, one-third of all English men and almost half of English women had to sign official documents such as marriage and baptism certifi- cates with an “X” because they were illiterate. The first law mandating compulsory education in England and Wales was passed in 1870. Before that time, the government invested nothing in public education. At the time of the American Revolution, however, 90 percent of the pop- ulation of New England was literate because of the instruction provided by Puritan churches.

By Linda Claridge Middup, Independent Scholar <1> Mary Martha Sherwood (1775-1851), staunch Evangelist and moral crusader, was a prolific writer of strongly didactic stories that were intended as educational tools both for children and for those who looked after them. Belonging to the increasing band of writers who offered advice to others, her religious homilies extolled the benefits that might accrue to her readers in the hereafter if they lived a modest and saintly life whilst in the here and now. Living a modest and saintly life was also seen by society as the acme of female existence, ensuring both a woman’s good reputation now and her future reward amongst the angels and this was an important consideration for readers and writers alike because, during the Regency, Georgian and Victorian periods when Sherwood was writing, a woman’s reputation was deemed to be a major part of her identity. <2> A ‘good’ reputation however, was usually based on nothing more than a woman being able to conform to ‘ladylike’ notions of femininity. These were based primarily on patriarchal expectations and societal limitations and if a woman’s femininity was compromised in any way by behavior that did not conform to an accepted norm, then her good name would be besmirched and her identity forever tarnished.

Laurie. 1 How the squirrel became a squgg: the long history of a children’s book Historians of children’s books are usually concerned with the production of new books, and with their authors or publishers. Remarkably little attention has been paid to the fact that old books were often reprinted, and competed with the new books. The ‘classic’ reprints of out- of-copyright works for adults which appeared in the 1820s and 1830s had the advantage of selling at perhaps 5s. or 6s. rather than the 10s. of a new title. This phenomenon became particularly significant after mid-century, when the cheap reprint trade took off in children’s as well as adult books. Cheap reprints of old children’s books became available at 2s., while new books were three times that price. In the 1850s and 1860s, old children’s books appeared cheaply in publishers’ libraries, and sold in numbers far greater than anything they had previously managed, even when new. Historians of children’s books have occasionally noted in passing that the older works did not completely disappear, but they have rarely given the matter much attention.1 Thus they have not considered how or why these old books survived.
