April 2021 MESSAGE from the EOC ACTING PRESIDENT Dear Colleagues
EOC NEWSLETTER No. 211 April 2021 MESSAGE FROM THE EOC ACTING PRESIDENT Dear colleagues, With the countdown clock to Tokyo 2020 now at well under 100 days to go, this summer’s Olympic Games are quickly approaching. As the National Olympic Committees of Europe and our athletes put the final touches on preparations, the latest Playbooks from the International Olympic Committee have given us valuable insight into what this special edition of the Olympic Games will be like. They will unquestionably be different from what we have been used to, and it is clear that each Olympic stakeholder will have to exercise a great deal of flexibility and patience to make these a safe and successful Games for everyone involved. But I remain convinced that we will pull it off as long as we remain united in our purpose – to ultimately provide, through sport, a little hope and encouragement to the world after such a trying and tragic period for humanity. Looking slightly further ahead, the European Olympic Committees continues to make real progress with regard to the European Games Krakow-Malopolska 2023. Last week the EOC Coordination Commission for the Games gathered in Antalya, Turkey for meetings with a range of important stakeholders, including potential partners, who will help us deliver the best edition of our continental Games yet. More information will be communicated to you on this subject in due course. Unfortunately, as you will all know, the Vuokatti Winter EYOF was recently postponed to March 2022, but I think everyone will understand that it was the only choice and will provide the local organisers more time to prepare the festival in the best way. -

You will also find the standings of the first three places in all events for men and women at the Olympic Games followed by several classifications which are listed either by the number of titles or medals by swimmer or National Federation. It should be noted that these standings only have an historical aim but no sport signification because the comparison between the achievements of swimmers of different generations is always unfair for several reasons: 1. The period of time. The Olympic Games were not organised in 1916, 1940 and 1944 2. The evolution of the programme. -

12th March, 2021 AIBA NEWS DIGEST DEAR MEMBERS OF NATIONAL FEDERATIONS! PLEASE SEND YOUR NEWS TO [email protected] TO SEE IT IN OUR NEXT DIGEST! [email protected] 12th March, 2021 AIBA NEWS DIGEST EUROPEAN BOXING CONFEDERATION (EUBC) THE UNFORGETTABLE "KNIGHT OF LEATHER GLOVES" JÚLIUS TORMA WOULD CELEBRATE HIS 99TH BIRTHDAY ON MARCH 7 "The Knight of Leather Gloves" Július Torma would celebrate his 99th birthday on Sunday, March 7. Czechoslovak boxing legend, historically the first Olympic winner of the Czechoslovak Republic from the London Games in 1948 in Wel- terweight, the darling of the audi- ence and the most remarkable boxer of his time, as dubbed by Rud- yard H. Russel, then president of the International Boxing Association. During his spectacular boxing career, he won almost a thousand bouts and lost in only seven. He was a multiple champion of Hungary, ten times champion of Czechoslovakia and in 1949 he won the title of European Champion. Julius Torma, with his dancing style, lifted the spectators from their seats and always acted like a gentleman in the ring: “That shouldn't even be the point in boxing. I rarely won by KO. That never even appealed to me. I just enjoyed boxing." He won his Olympic gold against the American Hank Herring. The stands were roaring as he was making his sidesteps to avoid being hit by an American “assas- sin”. After taking a hit, he flew onto the ropes and, completely disoriented for a while, looked about for an opponent. At the very end of the bout, Torma prepared a great encore. -

The vote was widely regarded as a rubber-stamping exercise. Two delegates voted against the change and three abstained, out of 2,964 votes. China had imposed a two-term limit on its president since the 1990s. But Mr Xi, who would have been due to step down in 2023, defied the tradition of presenting a potential successor during October's Communist Party Congress. After five years, Xi Jinping is tightening his grip on power. How did an unassuming official come to embody China's destiny? ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating – Day 2
December 8, 2019 Shanghai, China ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating – Day 2 Speed queen Kim Boutin again proved why she is the skater to beat over Short Track’s shortest and wildest distance, claiming her fourth successive 500m gold on day two of the ISU World Cup in Shanghai. Such is Boutin’s raw speed over 500m this season, the Canadian could even afford to be slightly below par in China, taking the gold just ahead of Netherland’s Suzanne Schulting and Italy’s Martina Valcepina despite a performance she later described as below her best. “I’m focusing a lot on my technique and I felt my last two laps today were really bad, so I need to work on that,” she said. “I still feel like I have a lot of things to learn, and maybe that’s why I’m continuing to do well. It was the first time I’ve skated against these particular girls in a final, so it was interesting to see how they race.” Boutin is now the pre-eminent skater in Canada’s women’s team following the retirement of Marianne St Gelais, but it was not long ago she considered quitting the sport to pursue a career in children’s education. But while she still has ambitions in that field, it could be a while yet before she hangs up her skates for good. “Over the summer I questioned myself a lot,” she said. “But we changed our training a little bit to make sure I keep going to work on my skills, which helped.
