A look back... 50 Years Ago – Summer 1962 On August 18, President John F. Kennedy spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony and dedication of the site of the San Luis Reservoir, a key part of the State Water Project and the Federal Central Valley Project. In part of his speech, he observed that “ . . . in this project, one part of your state has been willing to help another part because they realize that as this state does well, so does the United States. . . . Only when [the American people] are joined together for action can this country move ahead.” 25 Years Ago – Summer 1987 The Board approved a long-term plan developed by staff in conjunction with Merced County Public Works officials to replace 32 road crossings of CCID canals in the Dos Palos area. Costs would be shared equally between CCID, Merced County, and sometimes the City of Dos Palos, and the highly successful program concluded in 2011 with the completion of the last crossing on the list. 10 Years Ago – Summer 2002 The District purchased 50 acres of land north of Henry Miller Road and just east of the Main Canal, near Santa Nella, for the site of the Ingomar Reservoir, which was the final component of the Lower Main Canal Automation Project. Using money from the designated Conservation Projects Fund, the overall project was constructed from 1998 through 2006, at a cost of just under $6.5 million.
