A fauna ibero-balear do género inclui 34 espécies, que foram estudadas com vista à realização: (1) dum inventário das espécies que ocorrem na Península Ibérica e Ilhas Baleares; (2) duma síntese dos conhecimentos sobre a sua nomenclatura e taxonomia; (3) duma análise e revisão taxonómicas; (4) duma compilação e ampliação da informação disponível sobre a sua distribuição geográfica e altitudinal na área de estudo; (5) duma recolha e aprofundamento dos conhecimentos relativamente ao período de ocorrência dos adultos e às caraterísticas ecológicas das espécies; (6) duma análise, por técnicas de modelação ecológica, dos padrões de distribuição de espécies e de diversidade em áreas selecionadas da Península Ibérica e, finalmente, (7) duma recolha de informação sobre o comportamento dos taxa ibero-baleares do género Rhagonycha enquanto indicadores ambientais. Os resultados mais relevantes obtidos neste estudo foram: (1) a fixação da espécie- tipo do género Rhagonycha Eschscholtz, 1830, que foi publicada no âmbito deste trabalho; (2) a clarificação da autoria e da data de descrição de Rhagonycha galiciana Gougelet & H. Brisout, 1860 e a restituição do seu estatuto específico; (3) a adição do género Rhagonycha ao catálogo da fauna das Ilhas Baleares; (4) a adição de Rhagonycha hispanica Pic, 1932 ao catálogo da fauna portuguesa, acompanhada duma considerável ampliação da sua área de distribuição conhecida; (5) a adição de Rhagonycha quadricollis Kiesenwetter, 1852 ao catálogo da fauna de Marrocos; (6) o estudo da variabilidade cromática e da morfologia do edeago duma parte das espécies ibero-baleares, que permitiu uma melhor caraterização e definição das diferenças existentes entre elas; (7) a análise do dimorfismo sexual no género Rhagonycha , que apontou para a existência de diferenças na morfologia da cabeça; (8) o estudo do dimorfismo sexual em parte das espécies, que sugeriu a existência de diferenças em várias das caraterísticas medidas, bem como nos rácios calculados; (9) a elaboração do catálogo mais completo e atualizado da fauna ibero-balear e um incremento significativo do conhecimento da distribuição geográfica das espécies, proporcionando o primeiro atlas de distribuição das espécies do género Rhagonycha na Península Ibérica e Ilhas Baleares. Adicionalmente, foram tratados os seguintes aspetos de relevo: a análise do uso do saco interno do edeago com fins taxonómicos no género Rhagonycha , que revelou um conjunto de dificuldades e limitações sobre o qual se definiram objetivos de pesquisa futura dotados de grande interesse para o conhecimento taxonómico do género Rhagonycha a nível global; o diagnóstico da situação relativa aos grupos de espécies no género Rhagonycha , cuja definição e interpretação oferecem grandes dificuldades em termos de aplicabilidade e de 4 adequação do ponto de vista taxonómico, verificando-se que se trata duma situação que ultrapassa claramente o âmbito geográfico do estudo realizado e constitui uma linha de pesquisa futura de grande relevância. 5 Abstract The genus Rhagonycha Eschscholtz, 1830, included in the family Cantharidae (Insecta, Coleoptera), is one of the most diverse in the family, with 327 species recognised worldwide. The Iberian-Balearic fauna includes 34 species, which were the subject of this study with the purpose of developing: (1) an inventory of the species present in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands; (2) a synthesis of the knowledge of the nomenclature and taxonomy of these species; (3) a taxonomic analysis and review; (4) a compilation and improvement of the knowledge about the geographic and altitudinal distribution, adult occurrence periods and ecological characteristics of the species within the study area; (5) an analysis, with ecological

Habitat fragmentation and expanding urbanization threaten biodiversity in and around urban areas. Saproxylic beetles can act as bioindicators of forest health and their diversity may help to explain and define urban-forest edge effects. I explored the relationship between saproxylic beetle diversity and distance to an urban area along nine transects in the Västra Götaland region of Sweden. Specifically, the relationships between abundance and species richness and distance from the urban- forest boundary, forest age, forest volume, and tree species ratio was investigated Unbaited flight interception traps were set at intervals of 0, 250, and 500 meters from an urban-forest boundary to measure beetle abundance and richness. A total of 4182 saproxylic beetles representing 179 species were captured over two months. Distance from the urban forest boundary showed little overall effect on abundance suggesting urban proximity does not affect saproxylic beetle abundance. There was an effect on species richness, with saproxylic species richness greater closer to the urban-forest boundary. Forest volume had a very small positive effect on both abundance and species richness likely due to a limited change in volume along each transect. An increase in the occurrence of deciduous tree species proved to be an important factor driving saproxylic beetle abundance moving closer to the urban-forest.

Mitosporic fungi and bacteria dominated in litter su- perficial soil layer, forest, litter and floor vegetation whereas entomophtoralen fungi prevailed in bushy undergrowth layers and tree crowns. The dominant species Beauveria bassiana was observed in forest floor, subcortical habitats on dead trees, meadows and rushes. The species Entomophthora israelensis, Beauveria cf. bassiana, Paeci- lomyces suffultus and P. tenuipes were for the first time described as insect pathogens in BF. Entomophthorales seem to hold much greater part than mitosporic forms in the whole diversity of entomopathogenic fungi. Relatively rich sets of these fungi recognised in BF during last decades confirm the predestination of this area as highly significant ref- uge for other groups of arthropod pathogens, and it should encourage scientists to widen their research and contribute to a rather scarce knowledge in this field. Decaying wood is a major source of biodiversity in forest ecosystems. These were carried out during the period June to October 2018, and included spring, summer and autumn surveys. Samples of invertebrates were taken from eight agreed habitat types (Tables 2 & 3) using sweep netting, hand-netting, hand searching, beating and tussocking. These specimens were subsequently identified during the winter of 2018-2019 (see Methods). These data were added to a spreadsheet (MNP0296_BwCo_Invert_Spp_Data_2018.xlsx) which accompanies this report.

They are used with the bait of fermenting liquids (beer, wine) with the addition of sugar and other carbohydrates. The research was conducted in 2018-2020 in several regions of Russia. It was possible to identify 294 species from 45 Coleoptera families during this time. Simple traps have been shown to be highly effective and can be used to study insect biodi- versity in forest ecosystems. Abstract: The possibilities of applying various methods to study Coleoptera give unexpected and original results. The studies were carried out with the help of fermental crown traps in 2018-2020 on the territory of eight regions in the central part of European Russia. The biodiversity of Cole- optera that fall into crown traps includes 294 species from 45 families. The number of species at- tracted to the fermenting bait is about a third of the total number of species in the traps (this is 97.4% of the number of all caught specimens).

Infection by endosymbiotic “male-killing” bacteria in Coleoptera. Folia Biologica (Kraków) 66: 165-177. Wolbachia, Rickettsia, Spiroplasma and Cardinium are endosymbiotic and intracellular bacteria known to cause numerous disorders in host reproduction, reflected in their common name “male-killers”. In this study, 297 beetle species from various taxonomic groups were screened with the use of molecular markers for the presence of infection by any of these endosymbionts. Wolbachia was found to be the most common “male-killer” among beetle hosts as it infected approx. 27% of species. Rickettsia, Spiroplasma and Cardinium were much less prevalent as they infected: 8%, 3% and 2%, respectively, of the studied beetle species. This is the first report of Cardinium presence in beetle hosts. Incidences of co-infection of two bacteria taxa were very rare and only two weevil species were found to be infected by three different bacteria. These findings suggest that endosymbiotic bacteria inhabit their host at various levels of prevalence and that particular taxa usually infect different hosts, suggesting some competition among “male-killers”.
