Early Eocene climates were globally warm, with ice-free conditions at both poles. Early 16 Eocene polar landmasses supported extensive forest ecosystems of a primarily temperate biota, 17 but also with abundant thermophilic elements such as crocodilians, and mesothermic taxodioid 18 conifers and angiosperms. The globally warm early Eocene was punctuated by geologically brief 19 hyperthermals such as the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), culminating in the 20 Early Eocene Climatic Optimum (EECO), during which the range of thermophilic plants such as 21 palms extended into the Arctic. Climate models have struggled to reproduce early Eocene Arctic 22 warm winters and high precipitation, with models invoking a variety of mechanisms, from 23 atmospheric CO2 levels that are unsupported by proxy evidence, to the role of an enhanced 24 hydrological cycle to reproduce winters that experienced no direct solar energy input yet remained 25 wet and above freezing.

    Deyrup & Deyrup: Insect Visitors of Saw Palmetto Flowers 711 THE DIVERSITY OF INSECTS VISITING FLOWERS OF SAW PALMETTO (ARECACEAE) MARK DEYRUP1,* AND LEIF DEYRUP2 1Archbold Biological Station, 123 Main Drive, Venus, FL 33960 2Univ. of the Cumberlands, Williamsburg, KY 40769 *Corresponding author; E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT A survey of insect visitors on flowers ofSerenoa repens (saw palmetto) at a Florida site, the Archbold Biological Station, showed how nectar and pollen resources of a plant species can contribute to taxonomic diversity and ecological complexity. A list of 311 species of flower visitors was dominated by Hymenoptera (121 spp.), Diptera (117 spp.), and Coleoptera (52 spp.). Of 228 species whose diets are known, 158 are predators, 47 are phytophagous, and 44 are decomposers. Many species that visited S. repens flowers also visited flowers of other species at the Archbold Biological Station. The total number of known insect-flower relation- ships that include S. repens is 2,029. There is no evidence of oligolectic species that are de- pendent on saw palmetto flowers. This study further emphasizes the ecological importance and conservation value of S. repens. Membership in the MES is open to all persons interested in the study of entomology. All members receive the annual journal, The Maryland Entomologist, and the monthly e-newsletter, Phaëton.

    Bugs and Beasties of the Western Rhodopes (a photoguide to some lesser-known species) by Chris Gibson and Judith Poyser [email protected] Yagodina At Honeyguide, we aim to help you experience the full range of wildlife in the places we visit. Generally we start with birds, flowers and butterflies, but we don’t ignore 'other invertebrates'. In the western Rhodopes they are just so abundant and diverse that they are one of the abiding features of the area. While simply experiencing this diversity is sufficient for some, as naturalists many of us want to know more, and in particular to be able to give names to what we see. Therein lies the problem: especially in eastern Europe, there are few books covering the invertebrates in any comprehensive way. Hence this photoguide – while in no way can this be considered an ‘eastern Chinery’, it at least provides a taster of the rich invertebrate fauna you may encounter, based on a couple of Honeyguide holidays we have led in the western Rhodopes during June. We stayed most of the time in a tight area around Yagodina, and almost anything we saw could reasonably be expected to be seen almost anywhere around there in the right habitat. Most of the photos were taken in 2014, with a few additional ones from 2012. While these creatures have found their way into the lists of the holiday reports, relatively few have been accompanied by photos. We have attempted to name the species depicted, using the available books and the vast resources of the internet, but in many cases it has not been possible to be definitive and the identifications should be treated as a ‘best fit’.

The morphological variability and different modes of life result from beetle ability to adapt to all kinds of habitats. Terrestrial and soil living forms dominate. Beetles undergo a complete metamorphosis and most species live in soil during at least one of the stages. They include predators, herbivores, parasites and sapro- phagans, playing a fairly significant role in nature and in man’s economy. Our knowledge of beetles, even of the common species, is insufficient. In spite of the fact that the beetle fauna of Central Europe has been studied relatively well, the knowledge accumulated is generally limited to the adults, while the immature stages have not been adequately studied.

Nine are described as new species, namely Batkoa hydrophila from Plecoptera, Conidiobolus caecilius from Psocoptera, Entomophaga antochae from Limoniidae (Diptera), E. thuricensis from Cicadellidae (Homo- ptera), Erynia fluvialis from midges (Diptera), E. tumefacta from Muscidae (Dip- tera), Eryniopsis rhagonidis from Rhagionidae (Diptera), Pandora longissima from Limoniidae (Diptera) and Strongwellsea pratensis from Muscidae (Diptera). Pan- dora americana, P. sciarae, Zoophthora aphrophorae and Z. rhagonycharum are new combinations. Eleven species are first records since the original description. The list of species recorded from Switzerland amounts to 90 species representing 38% of the world-wide known species of arthropod-pathogenic Entomophthorales. Part I of this monograph (Keller 1987) treated the genera Con- idiobolus, Entomophaga [including the species later transferred on to the new genus Batkoa Humber (1989)], and Entomophthora. Part II (Keller 1991) treated the genera Erynia sensu lato (now subdivided into the genera Erynia, Furia and Pandora), Eryniopsis, Neozygites, Zoophthora and Tarichium. So far 51 species including 8new ones have been listed.
