The Villager

Villager No. 254 July 2016

The next copy date will be 19th August with anticipated delivery during week of 5th September , the following will be 7th October for 24th October delivery Moviola takes a rest through the summer but will be back with more great films to enjoy. Lots of our clubs also break during the summer but W. I. and Gardening Club carry on all year round. Great to see some many actors and actresses in - do try and pop along to see Abigail’s Party - the scenery certainly brings back memories of the 70’s!! We are a bit concerned that people in the local community are not aware of the proposed changes to the status of the Westminster Memorial Hospital. This is our local community hospital serving , Gillingham and the surrounding areas. It provides inpatient facilities providing rehabilitation and palliative care for local patients. There is a dedicated nursing and therapy team providing personalised care to sometimes the most vulnerable in our community. The clinical commissioning group are proposing the closure of these inpatient beds and the public need to be well informed. Please visit www.dorsetvision.nhs.uk to have your say, and please share this post. http://www.dorsetsvision.nhs.uk/ Our back page carries a transcript of a recent BBC News story on this topic. Articles can be handed to Gail or Mike or delivered to the following:Winters Grace, Elm Hill, Motcombe or e-mail [email protected] telephone 01747 850865 or Motcombe Community Shop, or Tanders, Elm Hill Motcombe (852545 )

Motcombe Gardening Club Our talk in June by Stephen Griffith (best known as Head Gardener at Abbotsbury Gardens) about the Coastal Plants and Gardens of Croatia, with photographs to set the scene and show off some of the plants, was very interesting and much enjoyed by everyone. Perhaps it even stimulated some ideas about visiting the area which looked beautiful. Then this week we had an expert from Brinsmore Gardens, Adam Wallis, showing us a great selection of plants as well as giving plenty of information and advice on Plants for North Facing sites and shady places. This proved to be popular and some members took the opportunity to buy some of these specialist plants. It was an excellent talk. Our stall at the village Fete, the coconut shy, was brightened up by some token hats for the coconuts and we were part of another successful Village event. Thank you to those who helped out on the day. Our August meeting is, as usual, our Summer Show. So please make a note of the date Saturday 6th August at the Village Hall. Entries need to be in by midday on Wednesday 3rd August. On show day the setting up of the entries can be done 08.00-10.00 and judging follows this. Then the doors will open at 14.00 for everyone to come and see the various displays. This is an open show so anyone can enter and if you have not got a schedule and would like one please phone me. We all look forward to the show as it gives us all the chance to put some flowers/produce/handicrafts/photographs on display for all to enjoy. Lets hope we have good weather before the day so there are plenty of things in the garden to choose from - but whatever the weather it will be fun. Our September talk is by Peter Prideaux entitled 'A Family Firm' about the history of Cases Meat Factory which was based where Prideaux Drive and Summer Oaks are now. This should be very interesting particularly to all of us who live locally. Meanwhile the garden demands plenty of attention and for all those who attend the monthly meetings Tom’s Tips are greatly valued. I gather some Petunias are growing on apace while others are still rather small - as Tom says, feed them. Tomorite seems to do the trick - follow the diluting instructions carefully! I look forward to seeing you all on the 6th August. Please contact me with any queries. Bev West Show Secretary 858981 [email protected] Motcombe Village Magazine 254 Page 2 July 2016 Welcome We would like to extend a very warm welcome to Jan Cuthbert who has moved to Motcombe to be nearer to her family - we hope you will be very happy here.

Motcombe Play Area We should like to put the record straight by stating that the donation of £96.19 mentioned in the June issue of The Villager from Motcombe WI to Motcombe Play Area, was in fact money donated by villagers for refreshments whilst attending the Motcombe Neighbourhood Plan meetings. The WI willingly gave their time for this event. The Committee, Motcombe WI.

Christian Aid This year's Motcombe Lent Lunch at Shaftesbury Town Hall raised £378 and the Christian Aid Week collection raised £428. Thank you to everyone who helped support these events. We are always looking for more helpers, so if you would like to take part in these events next year please ring Anne Wilkins to find out more (852257)

These are young people who are leaving care or have a broken relationship with their family but are not yet ready to live independently. Motcombe Village Magazine 254 Page 4 July 2016 Motcombe Community Players bring you their Summer Show

Be transported back to a Spring evening in 1977 somewhere east of London, where obnoxious Beverly (Joni Clowrey – ‘Daisy Pulls it Off) and highly strung Laurence (Mark Blackham – The Sourcerer) are hosting a dinner party for their new neighbours, talkative nurse Angela (Kate Kirpatrick – Blackadder) and tight-lipped Tony (John Laing – Flint Street Nativity). They have also invited their nervous divorced neighbour Sue (Wendy Ibboston - Flint Street Nativity) because her fifteen year old daughter Abigail is hosting her own party just a few doors away. As the cheesy pineapple sticks are nibbled and the alcohol flows, the initially stiff and polite group slowly lose their inhibitions and together they play out the drinks party from hell. Abigail’s Party is brought to you by Motcombe Community Players and is being shown at Motcombe Memorial Hall on: Friday 29th and Saturday 30th of July Doors open 7pm performance at 7.30pm. Tickets on sale at Motcombe Village Shop. Contact Wendy at [email protected] for more information. Will you be joining the party?

Since becoming an associate member of Moviola, we make a small profit from most of our monthly films. Jack Coward: a Motcombe Exile Now that Clifford Clark has sadly passed away at the grand old age of ninety- eight, Jack Coward who will be ninety-seven in July, is now the oldest living Motcombe exile. Jack was born at No. 1 The Street. When he was about two years old his family moved to number 41, opposite, where he spent the next forty-two years. He went to Motcombe School and then Shaftesbury Grammar school. He played in the football first eleven and the cricket second eleven. After leaving school he worked in the office at Motcombe Factory. His next job was at East Knoyle for a building firm where he stayed for fifty years; retiring at the age of seventy-three. During the war Jack served in the Royal Signals. His parents died when he was forty-two. He then left Motcombe to live with his sister at Shaftesbury. He now has a comfortable flat in the town. Despite his age Jack is still mentally very alert and has a marvelous memory. Although his mobility is not so good he still does his own cooking and some household jobs with a little assistance. Leslie Arnold, who died four or five years ago, is, to date, the longest lived Motcombe exile. He was ninety-nine. Some Motcombe people will remember his two sisters, Violet and Joyce, who lived at No.1 Church Walk. Elizabeth Gumbleton, who was not Motcombe born and bred, lived for many years in the village and was one hundred and five when she died. She was born at Enmore Green and lived in her old age with her daughter in Shaftesbury. L.Clark

Motcombe Village Magazine 254 Page 9 July 2016 Motcombe Village Fête

The Fete this year was a ‘Topper’, breaking last year’s record. So a big Thank you indeed to everyone who put up, took down, cleared up and also those who worked so hard running the Tea Room, BBQ, Book Stall, Hat Stall, Beer Tent, Pimm’s Tent, Crockery Breaking, Skittles and of course, the Raffle, and who did it purely for the good of our Village Hall. The Dog Show was a highlight, splendidly run by Sally Daymond and Verity from Lakemead Kennels, to whom we are mightily grateful. Did you like the Hats theme? Should we have the Hats theme next year? Join the planners and make your views known – they meet once a month from January for about an hour in the evening. Remember, it’s your Fete. A message from Irene and Jeanette: 'Thank you to everyone who supported the Hat Stall at the Fete. We had a lot of fun watching both men and women trying on the large range of hats donated to us and finding just the right one for them. We still have some lovely special occasion ladies' hats left over. If you have been invited to a wedding, or smart Summer party, please do come and have a look at them before heading for the shops'. Just ring Irene on 858382 as she will be storing them for a while. A brief note from David Scully – Thanks to all the people who kindly contributed books to the fête and thank you to all those who bought books. RIP Chris Wallis, who died suddenly in early July, was an active and much liked member of the Memorial Hall committee. He would always volunteer and help out wherever he could and we felt extremely fortunate to have him on board. His humour, input and industry will be sorely missed and we all extend our commiseration and deep condolences to Sue. Motcombe Memorial Hall Events Abigail’s Party Friday 29 & Saturday 30th July. DID YOU ENJOY THE VILLAGE FETE ON JUNE 18? If so, we URGENTLY need your help to put on the next one. I am most grateful to those who assisted on the day, and helped set up/take down, but plans for the Fete begin in January, and unless we get 4 or 5 people to join the Fete Committee, THERE WILL BE NO FETE NEXT YEAR. Do you want to, or do you know someone who might want to come on the committee? If so, please contact me soonest. It would be a huge shame not to have a Fete next year, but unless we get more people on the committee, it will not happen. John Maynard, Chairman Fete Committee 855070

Motcombe Village Magazine 254 Page 15 July 2016 Hubs' to replace 's community hospitals BBC Dorset News 13 July http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-36777040?SThisFB

Up to five community hospitals are to be replaced with care "hubs" in a shake-up of health services in Dorset.

Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) says it wants 110,000 patients a year to be treated closer to home.

Under the plans, an extra 69 community beds would be created but Westhaven Hospital in Weymouth and St Leonard's near Ringwood would close.

Portland and Wareham hospitals could also close along with Westminster Memorial Hospital in Shaftesbury.

Patients would be sent to the seven-day-a-week community hubs for appointments instead of going to outpatient clinics or A&E at Bournemouth, Poole or Dorchester.

Wimborne's Victoria Hospital is expected to be expanded into one of the new community hubs.

Dr Karen Kirkham of Dorset CCG said: "We have looked in great detail at... the outpatient provision of care and looked at the most common specialities that are used areas such as dermatology, diabetes, physiotherapy, care of the elderly services, and it is our ambition to bring that care closer to home for patients."

The plans will be subject to a public consultation.
