Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 BuYun Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen During the Tang dynasty, an increased capacity for change created a new value system predicated on the accumulation of wealth and the obsolescence of things that is best understood as fashion. Increased wealth among Tang elites was paralleled by a greater investment in clothes, which imbued clothes with new meaning. Intellectuals, who viewed heightened commercial activity and social mobility as symptomatic of an unstable society, found such profound changes in the vestimentary landscape unsettling. For them, a range of troubling developments, including crisis in the central government, deep suspicion of the newly empowered military and professional class, and anxiety about waste and obsolescence were all subsumed under the trope of fashionable dressing. The clamor of these intellectuals about the widespread desire to be “current” reveals the significant space fashion inhabited in the empire – a space that was repeatedly gendered female. This dissertation considers fashion as a system of social practices that is governed by material relations – a system that is also embroiled in the politics of the gendered self and the body. I demonstrate that this notion of fashion is the best way to understand the process through which competition for status and self-identification among elites gradually broke away from the imperial court and its system of official ranks. -

Earth, Planets and Space (2019) 71:85 https://doi.org/10.1186/s40623-019-1063-1 FULL PAPER Open Access Studies on the relationships of the Curie surface with heat fow and crustal structures in Yunnan Province, China, and its adjacent areas Limin Wen, Guofa Kang, Chunhua Bai and Guoming Gao* Abstract A Curie surface indicates the distribution of the thermal felds underground, providing a clear marker for the thermo- dynamic efect in the crust and mantle. In this paper, based on a geomagnetic feld model (NGDC-720) and aeromag- netic data, we use power spectrum analysis of magnetic anomalies to estimate the Curie surface in Yunnan Province, China, and its adjacent areas. By combining the distribution of the Curie surface with regional heat fow, the geo- thermal gradient, crustal wave velocity ratio anomalies, high-conductivity layer anomalies, and the Moho surface, we reveal the connection between the undulation of the magnetic basement and the crustal structures. The results indi- cate that the uplift and depression of the Curie surface in the research area are distinct. The Curie surface is approxi- mately inversely correlated to the surface heat fow. The Lijiang-Jianchuan-Baoshan-Tengchong and Jianchuan- Chux- iong- Kunming-Yuxi zones are two Curie surface uplift zones, and their crust-mantle heat fows are relatively high. The Curie surface uplift zone along the Lijiang-Xiaojinhe fault and Red River fault is consistent with the heading direction of the fault zone and is partially in agreement with the eastward mass fow of the Tibetan Plateau. The Curie surface uplift zone is consistent with the high wave velocity ratio and high-conductivity layer anomaly region of the crust. -

Mapping the Tea Horse Road 2016-03-07 Xiaohong Wang 王小红 Associate Professor, Institute of Collection and Research of Ancient Books, Sichuan University http://www.iq.harvard.edu/people/wang-xiaohong The ancient Tea Horse Road (chamagudao 茶马古道) was one of the world’s highest and most precipitous ancient roads, and was a trade route mainly through Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet, stretched across Bhutan and Sikkim, Nepal and India, and then reached Western Asia and even the Red Sea coast in Western Africa. In ancient times, people in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces exchanged tea for horses or medicines with people in Tibet. The tea, the medicine and the other materials were transported by caravans (mabang 马帮), and thus the pathway was called the Tea Horse Road, which was first named by Mu Jihong in 1990 when he and other five people first explored it. The ancient Tea Horse Road was an enormous network of trails which grew up between Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet in the long historical period. Generally speaking, it was divided into two major roads: Sichuan-Tibet Tea Horse Road and Yunnan-Tibet Tea Horse Road. The Sichuan-Tibet Tea Horse Road appeared in the Tang Dynasty, starting from Ya'an (雅安) to Lhasa (拉薩) via Luding (瀘定), Kangding (康定), Litang (理塘), Markam (芒康) and Chamdo (昌都), extending to the outside countries of Nepal, Burma and India. The Yunnan-Tibet Tea Horse Road was formed roughly in the late part of the 6th century, it began from Pu'er (普洱) to Lhasa, crossing Dali (大 理), Lijiang (麗江), and Shangri-La (香格里拉), continuing to Nepal, Burma and India. -

Yunnan Jianshui purple pottery is one of the four famous types of pottery in China, with a long history and superb craftsmanship. Used as tableware, research on the composition and element dissolution of pottery is extremely significant for production and health. This paper takes Jianshui purple pottery as its research object, samples its raw ores and finished products, and conducts X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry experiments, and dissolution tests. The chemical composition, microstructure, and trace element concentrations of pottery before and after firing were measured. Results show that the dissolution of purple pottery under various use scenarios is low and meets health requirements.
