Course Description We can find our and others’ thoughts as rational or irrational. What makes us do this? We can point out a gap in our thoughts, discover an assumption in our claims and examine the legitimacy of our inference and reasoning. These activities belong to logic. Roughly speaking, logic is about valid inference and reasoning in our thoughts. In order to analyze our thoughts and inference procedures, we need to have a technical language to express the thoughts and the procedures with clarity and rigor. We will study this technical language called First‐Order Logic (FOL) that helps us to disambiguate our use of natural languages, e.g. English, and prevents us from making logical errors in our arguments. In addition, FOL will allow us to formulate accurately the concept of truth, proof, and valid inference. FOL has been foundational in mathematics, computer science, and cognitive science as well as philosophy. We will be encouraged to apply our learning to other academic disciplines.

This course has requirements of daily homework assignments as well as midterm and final exams. Logic is immensely accumulative. If you deviate from the track at any point, you cannot proceed to the next step. It is very important to attend every class and do all the weekly assignments. You are highly encouraged to come to the office hours with any questions and problems you have in this class.

Do NOT buy a used book! We will use the software in this textbook package. Most of your daily assignments will be submitted electronically using the program Submit of this software. The software in this package requires a license that can only be used by one person and cannot be transferred.

Course Requirements and Grading 1. Attendance and Participation: Attendance is required in this course. You should sign the attendance roll for each class. The roll will be taken at the beginning of the class. Excused absences are only for religious holidays, serious health problems, and serious family problems. To receive an excused absence, students need to provide an appropriate document such as a confirmation letter from a health care provider or from the office of the Dean of the college.

All students are required to read the textbook, participate in group work in class and make a presentation about the result. You may meet the participation requirement in several ways: (i) participating in class discussions, (ii) making a presentation in class, (iii) attending office hours.

2. Exams: There will be two exams. The midterm exam is scheduled on Thursday, Jul 28 during the regular class period, and the final exam is on Wednesday, Aug 17 during the regular class period. The final is cumulative. There is no make­up exam for this course unless you have one of the three absence excuses mentioned above.

3. Daily Homework Assignment: You are required to submit a daily homework assignment. What you should do for this assignment will be announced every class meeting. But you can expect that every assignment will include exercise questions from the sections we studied during the previous class meeting. No late submission will be accepted.
