March 2-8, 2020 NCHCHockey.com | NCHC.tv 13 NCHC Tournament Seeding/Tiebreakers

Order of Tiebreakers for NCHC Tournament Seeding

Seeding of teams for the NCHC Tournament shall be determined by the final NCHC standings at the end of the regular season. If two or more teams are tied for the regular-season championship, they shall be considered co-champions.

The Penrose Memorial Cup shall be awarded and positions for the NCHC Tournament determined, according to the following pro- cedure. Shootout results (other than the accumulation of points as a result of shootouts) will not be used to help break ties in the standings for the NCHC Championship Trophy and playoff seeding.

1. If two or more teams are tied in the standings and all teams have played a balanced scheduled against one another (equal num- ber of home and away games between all teams tied), the seeding for the NCHC Tournament shall be determined by the team with the best NCHC regular-season winning percentage among the games played against the other teams tied in the standings. If any of the teams tied have played an unbalanced schedule against any other team tied this criterion will not be used and the following criteria will apply;

2. If not determined by (1), the seeding for the NCHC Tournament shall be determined by the greater number of NCHC regular-sea- son wins;

3. If not determined by (1) or (2), the seeding for the NCHC Tournament shall be the team with the best NCHC regular-season win- ning percentage among the games played against the other teams tied in the standings, regardless of the schedule being balanced among the teams tied;

4. If not determined by (1) or (2) or (3), the seeding for the NCHC Tournament shall be determined by comparison of total goals for and against each team in contests between (among) the other teams tied in the standings in NCHC regular-season play;

5. If not determined by (1) or (2) or (3) or (4), the seeding for the NCHC Tournament shall be determined by comparison of the winning percentages of the teams tied in the standings against the remaining highest ranked NCHC teams, successively, until the determination is accomplished or all NCHC regular-season contests have been considered;

6. If not determined by (1) or (2) or (2) or (4) or (5), the seeding for the NCHC Tournament shall be determined by the flip of a coin.

In the case of ties among three or more schools, the criteria will be used in order until the top team is separated from the pack. At that point, the process will begin anew to break the “new” tie with all remaining teams. In other words, when a four-way tie be- comes a three-way tie, the three-way tie is treated as a “new” tie and the process begins with the first criterion.

Head-to-Head Tiebreakers

• For the No. 1 seed: At 53 points, Minnesota Duluth wins tiebreaker with North Dakota on TB #2, conference wins (would be 17 to 16 for UMD) • For the No. 3 and 4 seed: See below • For the No. 6 seed: Miami holds the tiebreaker with Omaha on TB #1 (Miam 3-0-1 this season vs. Omaha) • For the No. 7 seed: At 20 points, Miami holds the tiebreaker with Colorado College on TB #4 (8-5 in their lone series) • For the No. 7 seed: At 21 points, CC wins the tiebreaker over Miami on TB #2, conference wins, as CC would have to have 6 wins and Miami would have 5

Denver and Western Michigan (spilt one series in November) • Tiebreaker is conference wins (TB #2) since they only played twice • At 41 points it goes to WMU (12 wins to 10 or 11 for DU), at anything less it depends if it’s a win or a combo of ties/3x3 OT wins • If tied on conference wins at whatever number of points, they split their two-game series, so it goes to TB #4, aggre- gate goals, which goes to Denver (7-3) Denver and St. Cloud State (played four games) • Denver wins tiebreaker, going 3-1-0 vs. SCSU (TB #1) WMU and St. Cloud State (WMU swept lone series) • Tiebreaker is conference wins (TB #2), currently even at 10 wins • If tied on conference wins, WMU wins tiebreaker on TB #3 with their sweep of SCSU at home
