No. 1, 115-131 ISSN 2171-6609 doi:10.5209/rev_PSLA.2011.v2.n1.5 Adolf Meyer and Spain: A Historical Account Gleaned through his Correspondence Natividad Sánchez Universidad de Sevilla (España) In the early twentieth century, the Swiss-born psychiatrist Adolf Meyer (1866-1950) played a major role in defining and institutionalizing the field of mental hygiene. In addition, he was actively involved in establishing American Psychiatry and Psychology as allied, but professionally and academically independent disciplines. From his highly visible position as professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University and director of the prestigious Henry Phipps Psychiatric Clinic, Meyer assumed a preeminent place in the American Psychological scene. From that position, he also exerted a profound influence internationally. This paper examines Meyer’s correspondence with certain Spanish authors in order to glean some insight into the significance of the Spaniards to their American counterparts. It is concluded that Meyer had a deep knowledge of the work of Ramon y Cajal, Nicolas Achúcarro, Gonzalo Rodríguez Lafora, and Emilio Mira. Furthermore, Meyer knew first-hand the political circumstances that forced most of them into exile, and worked with some American initiatives to support Spanish doctors and scientists during and after the Spanish Civil War.     Medical History, 2009, 53: 5–36 Psychobiology, Psychiatry, and Psychoanalysis: The Intersecting Careers of Adolf Meyer, Phyllis Greenacre, and Curt Richter ANDREW SCULL and JAY SCHULKIN* Introduction By common consent, Adolf Meyer (1866–1950) was the most prominent and influen- tial American psychiatrist of the first half of the twentieth century. Particularly after his appointment to Johns Hopkins, as its first professor of psychiatry, he dominated psychia- try in the United States until his retirement in 1941.1 But his influence was almost equally strong in Britain, where his pragmatism and therapeutic eclecticism had a wide appeal.2 In this paper, we examine some central aspects of Meyer’s life and work, and focus particularly on his role as a mentor and patron of the research and careers of two other major figures in twentieth-century psychiatry and psychobiology, broadly conceived. The first of these, Phyllis Greenacre (1894–1989), worked closely with Meyer from 1916, when she graduated from Chicago Rush medical school and joined his staff at Hopkins, till her abrupt departure from Baltimore in late 1927. For the next decade, Meyer continued to play an important role in her life and career, though to his dismay she was now progressively abandoning his distinctive type of psychiatry for psychoana- lysis. Completing that process of intellectual transition just as Freud’s followers were moving to a position of institutional and theoretical dominance in American psychiatry, Greenacre rose to remarkable prominence in those circles, one of the few non-refugee analysts to become part of the psychoanalytic elite. Curt Richter (1894–1988) was still another promising young scientist attracted to Meyer’s circle, initially through a decision to move from Harvard to Johns Hopkins to work with the founder of behaviourist psychology, John B Watson.

Any such history must perforce take account of the enormous role the Rockefeller Foundation (RF) played in shaping developments in the middle decades of this century. Though Rockefeller support for some aspects of psychiatry began in the nineteen-teens and –twenties (for example with support for the work of Thomas Salmon at the National Committee on Mental Hygiene, and as part of the more general support for the Institute of Human Relations at Yale), at the beginning of the 1930s, psychiatry was elevated to the major focus of the Medical Sciences division of the Rockefeller Foundation, and under Alan Gregg, the RF poured resources into both supporting individual researchers in the field, and underwriting academic departments to upgrade the training of future generations of psychiatrists. At first sight, the Rockefeller Foundation’s decision seems puzzling. Psychiatry as a discipline was still largely absent from most medical school curricula in the first third of the twentieth century, with most practitioners largely learning on the job via assistantships at the large state hospitals where hundreds of thousands of patients were confined. Little reliable knowledge existed about the etiology of most mental disorders, (the same can, of course, still be said today), and psychiatric therapeutics were in a similarly parlous state.

He was the first empirical scientist in the field, and certainly made his mark in virtu- ally every corner of it. Richter's father, an engineer, and his mother had emi- grated to America from Germany several years before Rich- ter was born. They settled in Colorado where Richter was born in 1894. His father, who died when Curt was a young boy, owned a factory. Young Curt spent a fair amount of time in it learning how to tinker. His father wanted Curt to become an engineer, and this made a lasting impression. The early life of Richter in Colorado was characterized first by a proclivity for fixing things, for tinkering and in- vention, and second, by an interest in sports. Both remained passions throughout his life. He was a zealous athlete. When he was young he excelled at baseball, skiing, and basket- ball. As an adult, and right into his eighties, he was an excellent tennis player, challenging people half his age.

Farber By 1900 domestication was a promising, if somewhat vexed, subject in biology. Volumes had been written about domestication, but little serious scientific inquiry was directed toward the phenomenon. Expertise lay with practical men, primarily breeders and fanciers. The bulk of scientific commentary on domestication came from anthropologists who derived theories about man’s evolutionary past and future prospects based on an analogy with domesticated creatures. To an experimental ethos emerging near the turn of the 20th century, one increasingly dependent upon animals kept and bred in the laboratory, the available knowledge of domestication seemed inadequate, with its practical orientation and use of metaphor, analogy, and speculation. A small number of researchers working at various points along the fluid border between biology and psychology sought to reestablish the scientific understanding of domestication on the basis of experimental results. I examine these latter efforts to determine how these investigators constructed new experimental understandings of domestication from the point of planning the experiments to interpreting the results and how these conceptions coincided with the widespread cultural resonances of domestication. Historians of science frequently correlate the experimental turn in biology and psychology not only with new standards of evidence, but also with new claims about disciplinary identity, expertise, and objectivity. Domestication researchers, however, failed to produce a substantially new, clear, objective, and widely accepted explanation of the phenomenon by midcentury.
