This in the mid's by the author A Small Place in Italy his wife. He's English. They keep the home for 20 years and restore some of the ruin during A Small Place in Italy period. It's good, with lots of physical detail and nuance of Italian rural life in that district, but it is written quite dry for my taste. As old as this tale is, it must be dated, but it truly does not seem so. Changing building method and material, access to craft men who know the uses of prior structures with skill of original purposes like the ovens in order to fix or re-purpose. Well, it is difficult nearly everywhere and in far easier locations then within Italy coupled with only vertical access for possible delivery. Beautiful, beautiful area is detailed. I was there, quite close to this in after visiting the Cinque Terre. Jul 13, Megan rated it it was ok. The book starts off pretty slowly-- the first pages really are about buying and renovating the house. The story picks up in the second half, with more interesting stories about their neighbors. The book could have used more editing. There are some really convoluted sentences, and the structure could have been better. Aug 07, Caro rated it really liked it. A refreshing contrast to Frances Mayes. I read his memoir Love and War in the Apennines two years ago which was absolutely incredible. It's stayed in my A Small Place in Italy all this time, so it was wonderful to read about these two, at peace and happy, in the decades the followed the war in which they met. Eric Newby is A Small Place in Italy fantastic, witty writer whose choice of words and depictions of the Italian characters often makes me laugh. I read this book for the 2nd time and this time it made more sense to me since I have lived in Italy for 6 years already. May 04, Carmen rated it really liked it Shelves: travel. Enthralling, very entertaining, the story of a lifestyle that has bit the dust. Eric and his wife bought a small place in Tuscany. Several times a year they come over from England to live there. Doing A Small Place in Italy, they immerse themselves in the community, helped by the fact that his wife speaks fluent Italian and he had been escaping from the Germans in that area in World War 2. The descriptions of the farmers and their lives reminds me of many stories I heard about relatives. Very amusing. You can tell Enthralling, very entertaining, the story of a lifestyle that has bit the dust. You can tell he has a real love for the place. The friend of mine who I borrow my Eric Newby books from said it best: 'The nice thing about Newby is there is no side to him. Odd as it may sound I feel like I know the Newbys at this point, and A Small Place in Italy evading fascist death squads, being dragged around soviet wire factories or helping with the grape harvest they are always pleasant company. Generations before Frances Mayes and others set the world spinning with tales of Tuscany, Eric and his wonderful wife Wanda were digging ditches, harvesting grapes, throttling nests of cockroaches and living the hardcore peasant life in Tuscany. All the while he remembers being on the run during the war and being helped by many Italians. He leaves a lot left unsaid but what he says is gold. Apr 10, Don rated A Small Place in Italy liked it. Italy, or perhaps France? I actually chose Newby's book -- a British paperback edition obtained from a second-hand bookstore through Amazon -- simply because I wanted to read something else by Newby. While not the best of Newby's writing, A Small Place in Italy -- as it turned out -- had a special interest for me. The house he and his wife ended up buying in the mid s named "I Castagni" was near Sarzana, in the hills about five miles behind Lerici on the Ligurian coast. As some will recall, before the pandemic, I had planned a birthday celebration next month with 30 guests for Levanto, at the north end of the Cinque Terre. Lerici is also where the English poet Shelley drowned, although that's not relevant to Newby's story. Reading the book was the next best thing to actually visiting the area, although as the book makes clear, the area changed radically between andwhen the Newbys sold their house and moved away. Readers of A Traveller's Life will recall that Newby temporarily escaped from a prisoner of war camp in Italy during World War II, and wandered about the Apuan Alps, holing up in a cave during one winter with assistance A Small Place in Italy local sympathizers. The nearness to that area -- between Lerici and Parma -- was one factor in his decision to purchase property where he did.

Project Overview: The Significance of the Database and the Historical Material it Covers We now experience buildings of the medieval past through the filter of repairs, restoration, and reconstruction. This may be particularly true for the monuments of the historic Kingdom of Sicily, which have been subjected to damage from earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and the aerial bombardments of World War II. In addition, South Italian monuments, like those everywhere in Italy, were usually once covered by Baroque decoration in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries, much of which was later removed during a period of “remedievalization” after the unification of Italy. Urban growth, especial- ly after the middle of the twentieth century, has transformed the visual and symbolic role of these representational monuments, their relation to the urban and natural landscape, and their importance for the visual cultures of Europe and the Mediterranean. So what do we actually see when we look at a medieval monument? Whose “Middle Ages” are we actually experiencing? Are there ways to come closer to the appearance of a site prior to all the changes and modifications described above? The Kingdom of Sicily Image Database (Fig. 1) (http://kos.aahvs.duke. edu/), freely accessible online since October 2016, is an attempt to respond to this question by collecting visual documents (drawings, paintings, pho- tographs, prints…) that illustrate the appearance of, and changes to, the medieval monuments of South Italy (roughly 10th-15th centuries) (Bruzelius 2016; Bruzelius, Vitolo 2016; Vitolo 2017a, 20107b).

Battaglia Department of Patrimony, Architecture, Urbanism, University Mediterranea of Reggio Calabria, Italy Abstract The 1693 earthquake was a disastrous event that struck south-eastern Sicily, in southern Italy. The disaster damaged several towns such as Catania, Acireale, Noto, Ragusa, Siracusa, Scicli, Modica and Palazzolo, and destroyed the majority of their monuments. The degree and extent of the damage caused by the earthquake prompted an architectural revival in the towns of Sicily, a style that has become known as “Sicilian Baroque”. Many of the public buildings, palazzi, cathedrals and churches were reconstructed in this style and at this time, these cities represented a considerable collective undertaking, successfully carried out at a high level of architectural and artistic achievement. One of the most representative examples of the Sicilian Baroque style are the balconies, supported by console brackets adorned with apotropaic masks; monumental portals with richly decorated voussoirs and keystones. This paper aims to investigate some of these elements: Palazzo Beneventano in Sicily, decorated with very expressive and grotesque apotropaic masks; the balconies of Palazzo Zacco in Ragusa with sculptures representing a mermaid and musicians playing maracas, flutes and trumpets; the balconies of Palazzo Nicolaci in Noto, in which every single console brackets is decorated in different ways: mermaids, winged horses, lions, cherubs; the balcony of Palazzo Judica Caruso in Palazzolo Acreide, the longest balcony in the world with its 27 console brackets. These architectural elements are very important in reporting the Baroque period of Sicilian’s history and represent the culmination and final flowering of Baroque art in Europe.
