Not surprisingly, Nirvana’s iconic “Smells Like Teen Spirit” tops the list of songs, followed by “Come As You Are,” “Lithium,” “Heart-Shaped Box” and “In Bloom.” And the band’s cover of David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold The World” comes in at #6. PPL’s Tim Silver said of Cobain and the band’s impact: “Kurt Cobain was one of the most visionary figures in music in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He inspired countless young people all over the world to start learning an instrument and to have the confidence to begin writing their own music,” he revealed. “On what would have been his 50th birthday, we are delighted to be able to honour him with a chart of the 20 most played Nirvana songs on radio and TV. There’re a lot of their best-known tracks in there but also one or two curveballs too,” Silver said. In addition to celebrating Cobain’s legacy, his daughter with Courtney Love, Frances Bean Cobain, paid a touching tribute to her late dad on Instagram. “Today would have been your 50th birthday. You are loved and you are missed. Thank you for giving me the gift of life. Forever your daughter, Frances Bean Cobain,” she shared in the sweet, handwritten note. The work was also used for the cover of Nirvana’s 1992 collection of B- sides, Incesticide. Artwork by former Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain will be front and center at next month’s Seattle Art Fair (August 3–6). The never-before-seen paintings will be presented by the fine arts division of the United Talent Agency. This marks the first time the division, which launched in 2015, has participated in an art fair. The presentation will feature two original works by Cobain (neither of which will be for sale) alongside work by other rebel artists from the past 30 years, including Mike Kelley, Joe Bradley, Nate Lowman, Elizabeth Peyton, and Raymond Pettibon. (Some of these works will be for sale.) 1/2 Joshua Roth, the head of UTA’s fine arts division, tells artnet News that given Cobain’s well-known skills as an “influential creator, it’s not too much of a leap” for viewers to see that he was a talented visual artist as well. (It runs in the family: Cobain’s daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, is currently having her second solo art show on the West Coast, at Pasadena’s Gallery 30 South.) Cobain’s paintings, which will be shown alongside some of his notebooks, have been in storage since his death in 1994.
