God's Own Country Is Francis’ First Feature Film Project
GOD’S OWN COUNTRY A film by Francis Lee UK • 104 min. • 2017 OFFICIAL SELECTION: Sundance Film Festival 2017 Berlin International Film Festival 2017 San Francisco International Film Festival 2017 Provincetown International Film Festival 2017 Outfest Los Angeles 2017 (Opening Night) Distribution Contacts: Samuel Goldwyn Films Ryan Boring, [email protected] New York Publicity Contacts: Cinetic Marketing Ryan Werner, [email protected] Courtney Ott, [email protected] Bingham Bryant, [email protected] God’s Own Country Production Notes Logline Francis Lee’s feature film debut is a contemporary tale of self-discovery and emotional-awakening set on the sheep farming hills of rural England. Synopsis Johnny Saxby works long hours in brutal isolation on his family’s remote farm in the north of England. He numbs the daily frustration of his lonely existence with nightly binge-drinking at the local pub and casual sex. When a handsome Romanian migrant worker arrives to take up temporary work on the family farm, Johnny suddenly finds himself having to deal with emotions he has never felt before. An intense relationship forms between the two which could change Johnny’s life forever. Long Synopsis Spring. Yorkshire. Johnny Saxby (24) carries the weight of his family’s dilapidating sheep farm alone. His formidable grandmother Deirdre (70) is now too old to work the land, whilst his father Martin (50), once a capable farmer, struggles in the aftermath of a stroke. Socially and geographically isolated and overwhelmed by the responsibility, yet too proud to accept any help, Johnny numbs his frustration with drink, dope and casual sex. -

Made in Britain: Warp Films at 10
13/14 Made in Britain: Warp Films at 10 A 10th Anniversary celebration at BFI Southbank In spring last year BFI Southbank launched Made in Britain, an annual exploration of contemporary British Cinema. In April the strand returns with a selection of the most ground- breaking titles from Warp Films, as we celebrate this seminal production companyǯ ͳͲ anniversary. Warp Films have in their way defined a decade and are helping to shape the future of British cinema, offering the opportunity for highly original and exciting talent to make films that might otherwise be overlooked. BAFTA-winning films such as the This is England (2006), Four Lions (2010) and Tyrannosaur (2011) will all feature, but the season will launch with what promises to be a truly awesome event when ǯ (2004), directed by Shane Meadows, will screen with a live music accompaniment Ȃ featuring musicians from UNKLE and Clayhill plus Jah Wobble - at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on Friday 29 March. There will also be a Warp Films Shorts Programme, including work by Lynne Ramsay, Chris Cunningham and Paddy Considine plus a BUG: Warp Records Special, followed by an aftershow in benugo with Warp DJs hitting the decks. To complement this amazing showcase there will be an exhibition of newly designed Warp Film posters, by Sheffield-based artist Pete McKee, displayed exclusively in The Atrium at BFI Southbank. Warp Films have been at the heart of a new wave of filmmaking in the UK and have provided a platform for fresh, radical ideas and emerging talent from film and TV. -

European Premiere of Free Fire to Close the 60Th
EUROPEAN PREMIERE OF FREE FIRE TO CLOSE THE 60TH BFI LONDON FILM FESTIVAL LONDON – Monday 1 August, 2016: The 60th BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express® is proud to announce that this year’s Closing Night gala will be Ben Wheatley’s high-octane action thriller FREE FIRE. The film will receive its European premiere on Sunday 16 October at the Odeon Leicester Square, attended by cast and filmmakers. Massachusetts late ‘70s. Justine (Brie Larson) has brokered a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two Irishmen (Cillian Murphy, Michael Smiley) and a gang led by Vernon (Sharlto Copley) and Ord (Armie Hammer) who are selling them a stash of guns. But when shots are fired in the handover, a heart stopping game of survival ensues. Ben Wheatley says “I'm very proud to be showing FREE FIRE at the BFI London Film Festival. To be the closing film is a great honour. LFF have been fantastic in supporting the films I've made (me and an army of 100s) and I can't wait to show FREE FIRE to the Festival audience!” FREE FIRE is Wheatley’s third film to be presented at the Festival, following High-Rise (2015) which screened as Festival Gala and Sightseers (2012) which screened as Laugh Gala. BFI London Film Festival Director, Clare Stewart says: “Ben Wheatley’s ascent as one of the UK’s most dazzling cinematic talents continues with this ballsy actioner. Dripping with blood, sweat and irony, FREE FIRE’s bravura filmmaking pays knowing tribute to the films of Sam Peckinpah and features a terrific cast who clearly relish bringing Wheatley and co-writer Amy Jump’s vivid characters to the screen. -

BFI London Film Festival announces first ever Premiere outside London with Manchester Special Presentation of Mike Leigh’s PETERLOO Embargo: Thursday 16th August – Wide 10:00am LONDON, Thursday 16th August: The 62nd BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express® is thrilled to announce the UK Premiere of Mike Leigh’s PETERLOO live from HOME in Manchester, followed by a Q&A, simulcast to cinemas around the UK, on Wednesday 17 October. The premiere will be attended by Leigh and members of the cast. On Friday 19th October the film will also screen in London, with a Q+A afterwards with Mike Leigh. Distributed by Entertainment One (eOne), PETERLOO tells the story of the Peterloo massacre, which took place 199 years ago today, on 16 August 1819, and stars Rory Kinnear, Maxine Peake, Neil Bell, Philip Jackson, Vincent Franklin, Karl Johnson and Tim McInnerny. The screening represents the first time the BFI London Film Festival has premiered a film outside of the capital, offering audiences in Manchester and nationwide the opportunity to preview a major release with Manchester’s history at its forefront. Written and directed by Mike Leigh, PETERLOO is an epic portrayal of the events surrounding the infamous 1819 Peterloo Massacre, where a peaceful pro-democracy rally at St Peter's Field in Manchester turned into one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history. The massacre saw British government forces charge into a crowd of over 60,000 that had gathered to demand political reform and protest against rising levels of poverty. Many protestors were killed and hundreds more injured, sparking a nationwide outcry but also further government suppression.
