A streamcare project that began nine years ago is nearing completion. Their initial vision was that residents in the Mangapiko catchment area would actively participate in the restoration, enhance- ment and protection of their local stream environ- ment. Te Awamutu mother of three Gemma Fladgate came away with runnerup on debut at the Taranaki Bodybuilding Championships. The sole Team Trainstation entrant on show at Hawera placed second out of a quality lineup contesting ‘novice figure, short sec- tion’, giving her qualifying status for the nationals. Coach Mike Smith says Fladgate’s mandatory poses were exceptional for a novice, winning three out of the six poses and she had a great choreographed routine. The rookie bodybuilder had a mere four months training which included heavy dieting, five weight sessions and five cardio sessions a week. She lost 11kgs of fat and gained muscle. “Gemma trained exceptionally hard for this one . . . I am very proud of what she achieved in what can take others years,” says Smith. Fladgate says she had a ball and is now planning to join four other team members for the Auckland Cham- pionships on April 18.

A tough stretch of two games in four days over the Easter break proved more than fruitful for Te Awamutu Sports in Wai- kato premier rugby. Wins over Hautapu and Mata- mata Sports yielded nine com- petition points, throwing them into the ‘top four’ mix, and showed glimpses of what this side is capable of achieving. The win over Hautapu, who were sitting pretty in second spot, was particularly meritori- ous in Cambridge on Saturday after the disappointment of two close losses. Norman Solofa scored for the visitors, while Nathan George rounded out a classy perform- ance with 18 points, courtesy of a try, two conversions and two penalty goals.
