Memory Work:

Memory verse: ( Consider ways to repeat this throughout your week) Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”

Get Active:

Have the kids think of 2 things that are wrong that a friend might try to get you to do. What kind of things might a friend say to get you to do it? Discuss this for a little while. Talk about how the kids can say no!

Things to learn before the lesson:

Ahimelech the priest was 's great-grandson. God told Eli that his family would die young (1 Samuel 2:31-33)

The bread gave David was the special bread that was on the table in the . The table was in the Holy Place.

Lesson ( please have your child use a Bible and read along with you)

1. Read 1 Sam 21:1-9 David asked Ahimelech the priest for some bread. Ahimelech only had holy bread from the tabernacle, but he gave the bread to David anyway. David asked “Do you have a spear or a sword?” Ahimelech said, “I have Goliath’s sword!” He gave it to David. A servant of King Saul was there named Doeg. He was an Edomite, a descendant of Esau, and he was Saul’s shepherd. Remember, David is running for his life here because Saul wants to kill him. Do you think Ahimelech was making choices that made God happy? Circle 2 things DAvid asked the priest to give him. Fill in the blank to name Saul’s servant who was there. 2. Read 1 Sam 21:10-15 David started acting like a crazy person so that they wouldn’t hurt him! The Philistine king said, “Get him out of here! He’s just a crazy man!” Why did he act crazy? Was that a good plan? Did it work? Circle the correct word. 3. Read 1 Sam 22:1-2 David ran from the Philistines’s land to a cave. There, about 400 men came to him and David became their leader. Trace the correct number of men who joined David. 4. Read 1 Sam 22:6-10 King Saul was very angry that David got away! He said to his men at Gibeath, “Why does nobody tell me what DAvid is doing? Will David give gifts to all of you ? Is that why you do not care about me?” I might pause here and discuss how Saul believes everyone is being paid in gifts. This is something untrustworthy people will do, and we should be careful. Doeg the Edomite spoke up and said, “I saw David at Nob. Ahimelech the priest gave him food and the sword of Goliath!” What do you think about what Doeg did? I would just let them discuss here. Who did Doeg say had helped David? Draw a box around the answer in the bubble. 5. Read 1 Sam 22:11-20 King Saul made Ahimelech the priest and his whole family come to him. Saul said to him, “Listen here! Why did you help David rebel against me by giving him food and a sword?” Ahimelech answered, “David is a leader in your army. We don’t know about anything that he has done wrong!” But King Saul said to him, “You will die, Ahimelech, you and your whole family! You knew he was running from me and you didn’t tell me.” So Saul turned to and said, “You kill the priests!” So Doeg killed Ahimelech and the priests of the Lord. But Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech, got away and ran to join David. Saul really has become evil, hasn’t he. He sure is jealous! We don’t make good decisions when we are acting out of jealousy, do we? In the Bubbles, write “yes” or “no” to show how the people answered Saul’s command. Fill in the blank to name the priest who got away. 6. Read 1 Sam 22:21-23 Abiathar ran to David and told him what Saul did. David told Abiathar, “It is all my fault. Stay with me and I will keep you safe.” David now has a lot of men with him. He has a sword, too. He knows God is with him and is preparing to be one of the best leaders of all time! Color what David said to Abiathar.
