Whether you have arrived by sea or air you are meant to be here, right now, as our guest. For many of the people of Haida Gwaii there is a strong belief that everything is connected and that everything happens for a reason. With this in mind please accept the responsibility of being a good guest in our home. There are many ways to demonstrate this. One way is by sharing and practicing reciprocity. We are sharing our lives with you: our knowledge, food, water, lands, homes, families and communities. In honouring your invitation to visit us, it is important to give back to this place and to contribute more than you have taken. This is how we maintain balance here. Balancing our needs as people with all of the creatures who share their lives and territory with us. We also must balance our relationships as hosts and guests and with the supernatural forces that surround us. When our relationships are disrupted and become out of balance this is when we end up in trouble as human beings. Here humans are equal to all of the rest of creation. We are no more important than any other being, large or small. Gaagwiis Jason Alsop President of the Haida Nation So, as you move about and experience all the magic our home has to offer, please take a moment to appreciate all of the small things and beauty that surrounds us. Reflect upon your life and your place within this world and how you can give back and make things better for the future. You are here for a reason, you don’t have to search for why, if you move with respect the truth will reveal itself. • Edge of the Knife
EDGE OF THE KNIFE (dir. Gwaai Edenshaw & Helen Haig-Brown, 2018 – 100 mins) Gwaai Edenshaw's four-years-in-the-making labour-of-love SGaawaay K'uuna (Edge of the Knife) has drummed up international headlines for being made in a language only spoken fluently by 20 people. Haida is the language of the Haida Gwaii, an Indigenous first nations community based in an archipelago off the west coast of Canada. Edenshaw, who is Haida and speaks the language but not fluently, enlisted language mentors to ensure that his cast and the English subtitles were accurate. Set in the 19th century, the film is shot through with a tactile integrity as a result of using real Haida people's talents to create costumes, props and the sound design. A carver by trade, Edenshaw made several props himself, staying up all night to make a mask, a cane, a headdress and a dagger in order to use them on the next day's shoot. “Rather than being tired for the loss of sleep I actually would feel more invigorated in those times,” he says to me over the phone, “I had been missing carving so much it helped my own mental health to be able to get some done.” This holistic approach to the nature of creativity is found elsewhere with the production enabled by a combination of the conventional – funding secured with help from Inuit production company Isuma - and the traditional practice of pot-latching aka trading and gifting. The story is a magical realist period re-imagining (in the vein of Ciro Guerra's Embrace of the Serpent) powered by Shakespearean themes of tragedy, revenge and family.

Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site 2015 Trip Planner © Elaine Yong Find your... © Elaine Yong inspiration © Parks Canada, Neil Osborne The Gwaii Haanas Crest The crest of the Archipelago Management Board (AMB) is a unique design by local Haida artist, Giitsxaa. The sea otter and the sea urchin were chosen because of their significance in the ecological and cultural history of Gwaii Haanas. Kelp forests are among the most productive ecosystems in the waters of Gwaii Haanas. Historically, populations of sea urchins, which feed heavily on kelp, were kept in check by sea otters. This ensured an abundance of kelp and provided habitat for many species, from sea stars to fish and marine mammals. With the extirpation (local extinction) of sea otters during the maritime fur trade era, the natural balance was disrupted. The sea urchin population increased dramatically. Underwater deserts exist where there were once rich forests of kelp. The loss of the sea otter is a powerful reminder of the vulnerability of individual species and entire ecosystems.
