1) Introduction

Huntly and District Development Trust (HDDT) is a community-owned organisation working with others to improve the quality of life in our local community. Amongst its many goals, HDDT is committed to helping our community be as active and healthy as possible, as well as reducing the impact of our carbon emissions. The Huntly Green Travel Hub is a key outlet for helping achieve these goals, through our community car share and e-bike hire scheme. There are three vehicles for use in our car club and 14 (soon to be 24) electric bikes for hire. We are also focusing on several other travel related projects, including creating safe routes to school, electric vehicle charging points and path network development.

For the last two years, HDDT’s work in this area has been supported by Paths for All’s Smarter Choices, Smarter Places (SCSP) Open Fund. The fund aims to encourage people to change their behaviour to walk or cycle as part of their everyday short journeys. In that time, we have seen our car club and e-bike usage rise significantly. With government targets to stop production of all new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030, coupled with the Scottish Government announcement of £500 million to active travel projects over the next 5 years, this is a very exciting and rapidly growing sector.

The success of the Green Travel Hub in general and the e-bike hire scheme in particular has created an opportunity for an enthusiastic, flexible Hire Coordinator to join the HDDT team, a role that is part-funded by the SCSP Open Fund. This is a real opportunity to build on the current momentum and make a positive contribution to both the environment and people’s lives.

2) Huntly and District Development Trust

Huntly and District Development Trust (HDDT) is a company limited by guarantee with charitable status that was formed in 2009 by and for the community of Huntly and surrounding district. This ‘community of benefit’ is defined by the AB54 postcode sector, which covers the town of Huntly itself and its catchment, including , , , Glass, Largue, Lumsden, Rhynie, Rothiemay and Ythanwells.

Our aim is to work with others to build a resilient, inclusive, enterprising community capable of dealing with ongoing change.

Our main objectives are:

• maintenance, regeneration, and improvement of the community’s physical, economic, social and cultural infrastructure, and assisting people who are at a disadvantage because of their social and economic circumstances • advancement of education and training, arts, culture, heritage, sports, recreation, and environmental improvement.

Our main activities are development and management of projects to make Huntly and District a better place to live work and visit. Since establishment, we have undertaken many projects with a wide range of partners. These include:

• Acquisition of three vacant buildings in Huntly town centre for redevelopment to meet community needs. The first of these has now been refurbished ready for occupancy by its tenants in early 2021.

• Acquisition and initial development of Greenmyres Farm as a community resource • Construction of three local foot/cycle paths, development of an AB54 Path Network plan and publication of the Walks Around Huntly and District guidebook • Co-ordination of a skills development and exchange project with 3 communities in Finland • Installation of gateway signage for Huntly • Production of a Community Led Place Plan for the Huntly Leisure and Learning Campus • Hosting a range of visits and events to showcase the area • Establishment and operation of the Room to Roam Green Travel Hub, with 3 low emission vehicles and 14 e-bikes.

While undertaking such projects to benefit our community we seek to generate our own income streams wherever possible so that we reduce our dependency on grant funding. To that end we have developed several renewable energy initiatives, including commissioning our own community wind turbine. With the income from those projects now on stream we are in a position to move forward more of our community’s long-held ambitions.

We have a membership of over 500, most of whom live in the AB54 area. We are governed by a board of eight volunteer directors and we employ five staff members (4.3 FTE).

HDDT is an active member of the Huntly Town Team, a multi-stakeholder forum to co-ordinate town regeneration efforts.

3) The Role

Title - Hire Coordinator

Contract – Fixed 12 month (extension dependent on funding)

Hours – Flexible full or part time (minimum of 20 hours/week on average)

Salary - £24,000 (for full time)

The responsibilities are as follows:

• Handle e-bike enquiries through our various communication channels. • Coordinate payments and keep a record of income with Admin Manager. • Meet e-bike customers to explain how to use the bike and hand the bike over. • Ensure relevant forms and details are collected and stored securely. • Liaise with customers about return of bikes. • Ensure bikes are stored securely. • Log mileages and usage. • Coordinate routine servicing and ad-hoc repairs with our maintenance provider. • Undertake marketing and promotional activity through the various channels available. • Assist with funding applications and reports. • Investigate locking and smart entry solutions. • Input new walking and cycling routes to the website. • Assist in procuring materials for new office/workshop space. • Assist in the organising of the Room to Ride Audax and Family Fun Day.

• Assist in operation and marketing of the Huntly Car Club. • Attend community engagement sessions, like farmers markets, school fayres, etc. • Assist in bookings, operation, and promotion of our Greenmyres Ecobothy site. • Any other activities to develop the Green Travel Hub and support HDDT.

This role would suit someone who:

• Enjoys face to face contact and meeting new people. • Can work flexible hours to allow for evening and weekend hires. • Has basic bike maintenance skills (training available if not). • Can use MS office, Facebook, and preferably Instagram and Twitter. • Has good admin skills and attention to detail. • Is a self-starter with a sense of responsibility and can use their own initiative to market and develop other areas of the Green Travel Hub during quiet periods.
