Tymoczko’s Four Sequences ...........................................................................54 viii CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION In my thesis I will examine vertical components of Chopin’s Prelude in E minor, op. 28 no. 4, mm. 1-12. My approach explores the musical phenomenon referred to in music theory literature as ambiguity. Ambiguity in music exists “when what we expect does not occur, when our efforts to find specific musical norms are frustrated.”1 Given this description of ambiguity, musical analysis compares a composition to a musical syntax, which in this case is the syntax of tonal music. Syntax generates implications, while knowledge of that syntax—whether intellectual or experiential—generates expectations. When implications and expectations do not match, the result is ambiguity. In order to identify implications, I will reduce passages from the Prelude to show the harmonic configuration. By comparing harmonic reductions to the syntax of tonal music, I will determine (and notate in my analysis) where an implication occurs and if it is violated. This reductive approach is similar to that of Heinrich Schenker’s, but instead of 1Deborah Stein, Engaging Music (New York: Oxford University Press, 2005), 77. 1 2 representing underlying structures in tonal music, my analysis will represent violations of implications and their role in tonal ambiguity. An analysis of music requires one to choose the appropriate analytical technique for a given work. According to some music scholars, the application of methods used for tonal analysis to atonal or ambiguous music is impractical. For example, Leonard Meyer claimed that “it is pointless to analyze a work by Boulez in terms of techniques developed by Heinrich Schenker for the analysis of tonal music.”2 Eugene Narmour finds fault in roman-numeral analysis all together, claiming that there is a “naïve associationism inherent in the roman-numeral analysis of harmonic function…”3 Also, in Charles J.     Dr. Barbara Murphy University of Tennessee School of Music SECONDARY DOMINANTS (APPLIED DOMINANTS) DEFINITION: A secondary dominant is an altered chord having a dominant or leading tone relationship to a chord in the key other than the tonic. An altered chord is a chord containing at least one tone that is foreign to the key. Using secondary dominants results in the tonicization of the chord of resolution. Tonicization is the process of emphasizing a chord by making it seem like the tonic for a relatively short period of time. Usually this is accomplished by embellishing the chord with a chord that has a dominant or leading tone relationship to it (a secondary dominant). ANALYSIS: Secondary dominants are analyzed as 'x/y' where: x is one of : V, V7, viio, viio/ 7, viio7 y is a major or minor triad in the key. y can be one of: Major key: ii, iii, IV, V, vi minor key: iv, V, VI y can not be a diminished or augmented triad since diminished and augmented triads do not act as tonic triads.     The Consecutive-Semitone Constraint on Scalar Structure: A Link Between Impressionism and Jazz1 Dmitri Tymoczko The diatonic scale, considered as a subset of the twelve chromatic pitch classes, possesses some remarkable mathematical properties. It is, for example, a "deep scale," containing each of the six diatonic intervals a unique number of times; it represents a "maximally even" division of the octave into seven nearly-equal parts; it is capable of participating in a "maximally smooth" cycle of transpositions that differ only by the shift of a single pitch by a single semitone; and it has "Myhill's property," in the sense that every distinct two-note diatonic interval (e.g., a third) comes in exactly two distinct chromatic varieties (e.g., major and minor). Many theorists have used these properties to describe and even explain the role of the diatonic scale in traditional tonal music.2 Tonal music, however, is not exclusively diatonic, and the two nondiatonic minor scales possess none of the properties mentioned above. Thus, to the extent that we emphasize the mathematical uniqueness of the diatonic scale, we must downplay the musical significance of the other scales, for example by treating the melodic and harmonic minor scales merely as modifications of the natural minor. The difficulty is compounded when we consider the music of the late-nineteenth and twentieth centuries, in which composers expanded their musical vocabularies to include new scales (for instance, the whole-tone and the octatonic) which again shared few of the diatonic scale's interesting characteristics. For example, a strategically placed diminished seventh chord could underscore a particularly emotional image from the text of a song. A vivid and painful example is heard in the last moment of Schubert's "Erlking." Immediately before we learn of the fate of the sick child ("and in [the father's] arms, the child ..."), the previous 145 measures of frantic, wildly galloping music come to a halt. The fermata that marks this moment, and which seems to last forever, is accompanied by a single sustained diminished seventh, underscoring this crucial moment (Example 28.8). We learn immediately thereafter that in spite of his valiant attempts to rush his sick son home by horseback, the father was too late: The child was dead. I f it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark, it is an indication of either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, duplicate copy, or copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed. For blurred pages, a good image o f the page can be found in the adjacent frame.
