And so we arrive at the finale to the wonderful Shadow series on the heals of the tumultuous events of the previous three books, Ender's ShadowShadow of the Hegemon and Shadow Puppets. For those that have not read the previous installments, there will be some spoilers below as the plot summary alludes to events that have occurred in the previous books. However, I will avoid spoilers for this book and will try and be as general as possible in the synopsis. This book concludes short 4. This book concludes shortly after the conclusion of Shadow Puppets with the fall out from the momentous events of that story being felt around the world. While I did not like this as much as the previous books in the series, I still thought it was very good. The geo-political landscape of the future Shadow of the Giant of this series is such a fascinating place full of subtle intrigue and shifting alliances that it makes a great backdrop for the stories. I think Card did terrific job setting up this credible alternative future. One final comment I thought would share. I then loved the third books of both series more than the first but not as much as the second Xenocide and Shadow Shadow of the Giant. If nothing else, OSC is consistent. View all 3 comments. Oh, jeesh, where do I even begin? No one really annoyed me in those two books. I can't speak to the remainder of Ender's series because I got so bored listening to Speaker for the Dead that I set is aside for a bit. Why do I keep doing it? Good question. And the readers for his books are Shadow of the Giant fabulous. I wish I Shadow of the Giant just have them walk around with me and narrate my life. Then again, I'd probably be lulled to sleep a little too much. As you Shadow of the Giant see by the graph, my annoyances hugely increased from Book 1 to Book 3. I listened to them out of order It was only downhill from there. View all 4 comments. March Previously: Shadow Puppets Oh, the suspense is killing me. Bean is dying! Any day now. Bean was slightly interesting, when he was still a tiny child genius one-upping all the stupid adults, but the novelty of that wore off. But just barely. Thing is, the real story in the Shadow series is about Peter Wiggin and his road to the hegemony. And Card nearly got it right this time! I get it. So all that was a bust. Somebody stop me. I guess? I first read these books a really long time ago. Ender's Game had been one my favorite sci-fi books ever back in the day I will never forget how I felt when I read the "twist" at the end of that book. It was one of those moments that literally put goosebumps on my arms. I ended up reading most of the Enderverse books and liking them. I remembered that this was my least f Who the hell decides to randomly re-read Shadow of the Giant 4 in a series that they haven't touched in YEARS? I remembered that this was my least favorite of the series, but not why. I think I just thought it was the most boring one? I remembered there was a lot of politics Shadow of the Giant this one. I wondered if I'd be able to pick this back up with my older, more patient and more mature? Shadow of the Giant, NO. Jesus, no. This was so bad. And no, my big criticism isn't that it's so unrealistic that teenagers are able to control and lead countries. The book that had alien buggers in space? Sooo, I mean. I don't think "realism" is one of standards that I really need to hold the rest of these books up to lol. I actually LOVE that part of the whole thing. Following the members of Ender's jeesh, these genius kids who have had elite training and Shadow of the Giant through a nightmare together, going back to regular life on Earth. How Battle School was a veritable melting pot, but leaving and going back home meant testing your former loyalties and friendships cuz Shadow of the Giant was a country that wanted to use Shadow of the Giant to wage war against each other. It was fun and it was cool. What I didn't like was how Card completely shits on all the female characters here. Shadow of the Giant - Orson Scott Card - Google книги Bean's past was a battle just to survive. He first appeared on the streets Shadow of the Giant Rotterdam, a tiny child with a mind leagues beyond anyone else. He knew he could not survive through strength; he used his tactical genius to gain acceptance into a children's gang, and then to help make that gang a template for success for all the others. He civilized them, and lived to grow older. Then he was discovered by the recruiters for the Battle School. For Earth was at war - a terrible war with an inscrutable alien enemy. A war that humanity was near to losing. But the long distances of interstellar space has given hope to the defenders of Earth - they had time to train military geniuses up from childhood, forging them into an irresistible force in the high-orbital facility called the Battle School. Now, in Shadow of the GiantBean's story continues. Bean was the smallest student at the Battle School, but he became Ender Wiggins' right hand, Since then he has grown to be a power on Earth. He served the Hegemon as strategist and general in the terrible wars that followed Ender's defeat of the alien empire attacking Earth. Now he and his wife Petra yearn for a safe place to build a family - something he has never known - but there is nowhere on Earth that does not harbor his enemies - old enemies from the days in Ender's Jeesh, new enemies from the wars on Earth. To find security, Bean and Petra must once again follow in Ender's footsteps. They must leave Earth behind, in the control of the Hegemon, and look to the stars. It's hard to write a cogent review of this book because it's really just a 'tweener between Shadow Puppets and Shadow in Flight. In this one the continual reminders that Bean is dying are annoying Although Shadow of the Giant continues many of the lackluster storylines inherited from Shadow Puppets—the hunt for Bean and Petra's "babies" being the worst offender—it also manages Shadow of the Giant not eff Orson Scott Card is best known for his science fiction novel Ender's Game and it's many sequels that expand the Ender Universe into the far future and the near past.

Broyles Special Activities and Innovation Operations Evaluation Group Copyright © 2017 CNA Abstract The military is on the cusp of a major technological revolution, in which warfare is conducted by unmanned and increasingly autonomous weapon systems. However, unlike the last “sea change,” during the Cold War, when advanced technologies were developed primarily by the Department of Defense (DoD), the key technology enablers today are being developed mostly in the commercial world. This study looks at the state-of-the-art of AI, machine-learning, and robot technologies, and their potential future military implications for autonomous (and semi-autonomous) weapon systems. While no one can predict how AI will evolve or predict its impact on the development of military autonomous systems, it is possible to anticipate many of the conceptual, technical, and operational challenges that DoD will face as it increasingly turns to AI-based technologies.

Daniel Boone Regional Library Book Discussion Kit DBRL One READ Selection 2005 Callaway County / Columbia / Southern Boone County Public Libraries www.dbrl.org Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card Page 1 Tips for Book Discussions from Washington Center for the Book at Seattle Public Library Reading Critically Books that make excellent choices for discussion groups have a good plot, well-drawn characters, and a polished style. These books usually present the author’s view of an important truth and not infrequently send a message to the reader. Good books for discussion move the reader and stay in the mind long after the book is read and the discussion is over. These books can be read more than once, and each time we learn something new. Reading for a book discussion—whether you are the leader or simply a participant—differs from reading purely for pleasure. As you read a book chosen for a discussion, ask questions and mark down important pages you might want to refer back to. Make notes like, "Is this significant?" or "Why does the author include this?" Making notes as you go slows down your reading but gives you a better sense of what the book is really about and saves you the time of searching out important passages later. Obviously, asking questions as you go means you don't know the answer yet, and often you never do discover the answers. But during discussion of your questions, others may provide insight for you. Don't be afraid to ask hard questions because often the author is presenting difficult issues for that very purpose.

I have used a Lucida Sans Unicode font throughout the work. The Lucida Sans Unicode font has been modified for the Okanagan Nsyilxcen alphabet. Nsyilxcen words, phrases and sentences are a necessary component of the work. The Lucida Sans Unicode font is modified to accommodate Nsyilxcen sounds on the English Standard keyboard. Some letters on the Okanagan Keyboard displaces some of the upper case font letters. As a result, for consistency Nsyilxcen is not capitalized as a standard. Except where ms word had the ability to autocorrect, Nsyilxcen words are in lower case. I have not adhered to the usual style of English grammar. Nsyilxcen is my primary language and English is a second language. Also important to me was the ability to maintain the structural qualities of the ―transition‖ English prevalent in Okanagan Syilx communities to allow greater accessibility to my community peers. • Staging the Past: Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle in Divided Germany
Staging the Past: Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle in Divided Germany during the 1970s and 1980s Alexander K. Rothe Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Alexander K. Rothe All rights reserved ABSTRACT Staging the Past: Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle in Divided Germany during the 1970s and 1980s Alexander K. Rothe The staging of Richard Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen provides an ideal site to examine representations of the German past in the opera house and the broader cultural world surrounding it, in particular how these representations reveal different conceptions of the past in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). By looking at three different productions of the Ring cycle in divided Germany during the 1970s and 1980s, I will show how Wagner stagings both reflected and contributed to historical debates about the Nazi past and discussions about cultural and national identity. The introduction considers why stagings of Wagner’s Ring cycle are so important for understanding national identity and the process of coming to terms with the Nazi past (Vergangenheitsbewältigung) in the two German states. Along with describing my own methodology, I give an overview of the different approaches to opera staging in recent musicological scholarship. Chapter One provides contextual information on divided Germany during the 1970s and 1980s, and it also introduces three historical debates that appear in the case studies. Chapter Two begins by looking at the Leipzig Ring (1973- 1976), directed by Joachim Herz, as a parable about nineteenth-century class conflict.
