Community Values Section 2 CONTEXTUAL BACKGROUND 11 Local & Regional Setting Regional Setting Pasadena is situated at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains in the western San Gabriel Valley, approximately 10 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. This location offers numerous advantages, including convenient freeway and airport access that will continue to provide the City a competitive advantage as a regional business hub. Moreover, few localities can match the physical beauty afforded by the backdrop of the San Gabriels. San Gabriel Mountains Local Setting Located in the heart of the City, the Central District’s approximately 960 acres essentially correspond to the area recognized by Pasadena’s residents as “Downtown.” (Downtown and Central District will be used interchangeably in this document.) Included within its boundaries are the activity centers popularly known as Old Pasadena, the Civic Center, the Playhouse District, and South Lake Avenue; each makes a special contribution to this urban setting with an active mixture of uses. The Central District’s boundaries are clearly marked to the north and west by the 210 and 710 Freeways respectively, and it’s buildings are prominent features along these highways. Approaching the campuses of the California Institute of California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and Pasadena City College (PCC), the eastern Technology boundary lies one to two blocks east of Lake Avenue. The southern limit roughly follows California Boulevard, except that the Specific Plan area includes the Arroyo Parkway corridor extending from the 110 Freeway into the midst of Downtown.

Tom Sitton was appointed project facilitator in 1974 and worked with various historical societies to complete survey forms. From 1976 to 1977, the museum project operated through a grant awarded by the state Office of Historic Preservation, which allowed the hiring of three graduate students for the completion of 500 surveys, taking site photographs, as well as to help write eighteen nominations for the National Register of Historic Places (three of which were historic districts). The project concluded in 1978. Preferred Citation: Historic Sites Surveys, Seaver Center for Western History Research, Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History Special Formats: Photographs Scope and Content: The Los Angeles County historic site surveys were conducted from 1974 through 1978. FOUNDED IN 1965 Since the US presidential election, I have been thinking a lot about the community that East West Players has created over the last 52 years, where artists, storytellers, and changemakers have gathered to create, inform, and respond to the society we live in. It’s this reflection on existing strong partnerships and new connections that leads us to our 52nd Anniversary Season, The Company We Keep, which focuses on our community in the past, present, and future. We start the season with a special add-on event, Kaidan Project: Walls Grow Thin, in association with Rogue Artists Ensemble, which is a site-specific, immersive theatrical experience inspired EAST by the Japanese ghost stories of the same name. We continue with a revival of award-winning playwright Philip Kan Gotanda’s Yohen, in partnership with The Robey Theatre Company and with Danny Glover reprising his starring role from our 1999 co-production. The Theatre File collection has international holdings but the primary focus is on United States theatres. Background Information The Theatre Historical Society of America was founded in 1969 to promote the legacy of America’s historic theatres and insure the documentation of the architectural, cultural and social history of those theatres. Materials were collected by members and kept in separate locations. Over time the collections were brought to one location and combined. From these initial collections the materials were organized and separated into several different collections. Records detailing histories of specific theatres were labeled the Theatre File, materials containing information on theatre mechanics, cinema chains, architects, THS members, vaudeville circuits, among other topics became the Subject Files, Photos that were used in the publication of Marquee were gathered into the Editors Collection, photographic slides, postcards, and negatives became the THS Slide Collection, THS Postcard Collection, and THS Negative Collection respectively. These collections came from THS members and donations made throughout the organization’s history. Scope and Contents Note The Theatre File collection consists of 148 linear feet of folders stored in 28 vertical filing cabinets. The files are organizes geographically by country, state, city and then alphabetically by theatre. The file headings use US postal code abbreviations and include the city and theatre name in the file name, for example IL-Chicago- Tivoli.
