Agenda item: (to be completed by Board staff) USF Board of Trustees ( March 7, 2013) Issue: Proposed Ph.D. in Integrative Biology ________________________________________________________________ Proposed action: New Degree Program Approval ________________________________________________________________ Background information: This application for a new Ph.D is driven by a recent reorganization of the Department of Biology. The reorganization began in 2006 and was completed in 2009. The reorganization of the Department of Biology, in part, reflected the enormity of the biological sciences, and in part, different research perspectives and directions taken by the faculty in each of the respective areas of biology. Part of the reorganization was to replace the original Ph.D. in Biology with two new doctoral degrees that better serve the needs of the State and our current graduate students by enabling greater focus of the research performed to earn the Ph.D. The well-established and highly productive faculty attracts students to the Tampa Campus from all over the United States as well as from foreign countries. The resources to support the two Ph.D. programs have already been established in the Department of Biology and are sufficient to support the two new degree programs. The reorganization created two new departments; the Department of Cell Biology, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology (CMMB) and the Department of Integrative Biology (IB). This proposal addresses the creation of a new Ph.D., in Integrative Biology offered by the Department of Integrative Biology (CIP Code 26.1399). O’Reilly, Anne-Claire Fabre, Carla Bardua, Aurélien Lowie, Renaud Boistel and Stanislav N. Gorb Abstract Amphibians are different from most other tetrapods because they have a biphasic life cycle, with larval forms showing a dramatically different cranial anatomy and feeding strategy compared to adults. Amphibians with their exceptional diversity in habitats, lifestyles and reproductive modes are also excellent models for studying the evolutionary divergence in feeding systems. In the present chapter, we review the literature on amphibian feeding anatomy and function published since 2000. We also present some novel unpublished data on caecilian feeding biome- chanics. This review shows that over the past two decades important new insights in our understanding of amphibian feeding anatomy and function have been made possible, thanks to a better understanding of the phylogenetic relationships between taxa, analyses of development and the use of biomechanical modelling. In terms of functional analyses, important advances involve the temperature-dependent nature of tongue projection mechanisms and the plasticity exhibited by animals when switch- A. Duke Updated by: CWHR Staff Jan. 2000, Nov. 2014, and Dec. 2018 DISTRIBUTION, ABUNDANCE, AND SEASONALITY The limestone salamander is a highly restricted species known primarily from the mixed chaparral habitats along the Merced River and its tributaries in Mariposa Co. at 271-800 m (890-2624 ft) elevation. It is sometimes associated with limestone outcrops. Seasonal activity is fully dependent on significant rainfall, generally early November to the end of March (Tordoff 1980). During periods of surface activity, this species is found under surface objects on steep north and east-facing slopes. California buckeye may serve as an indicator species for optimal habitat. SPECIFIC HABITAT REQUIREMENTS Feeding: No data on food habits but probably forages on insects and other small invertebrates. Cover: During the period of surface activity, cover is provided by logs, rocks, and occasionally other surface objects, under which salamanders take refuge. For populations associated with limestone outcrops, rock or rock microhabitats appear to be preferred. Individuals may seek refuge in limestone caverns, deep talus formations, or fissures in massive rock areas during the rest of the year. Reproduction: Little is known about habitat requirements for breeding and egg laying in this species. A related salamander (H. shastae) apparently breeds, and is known to lay eggs, in limestone caverns (Gorman 1956). Water: No data on water needs, which are probably met during the period of surface activity by fall, winter, and spring rains. -

ACTION: Interim rule; request for comments; notice of availability of economic analysis. 1 SUMMARY: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is amending its regulations under the Lacey Act to add all species of salamanders from 20 genera, of which there are 201 species, to the list of injurious amphibians. With this interim rule, both importation into the United States and interstate transportation between States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or any territory or possession of the United States of any live or dead specimen, including parts, of these 20 genera of salamanders are prohibited, except by permit for zoological, educational, medical, or scientific purposes (in accordance with permit conditions) or by Federal agencies without a permit solely for their own use. This action is necessary to protect the interests of wildlife and wildlife resources from the introduction, establishment, and spread of the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans into ecosystems of the United States. The fungus affects salamanders, with lethal effects on many species, and is not yet known to be found in the United States. Long-term monitoring is highly recommended to evaluate their status and to assess potential threats. Here we used two low-impact methodologies to build up a large dataset on two mainland Speleomantes species (S. strinatii and S. ambrosii), which represents an update to two previously published datasets, but also includes several new populations. Specifcally, we provide a set of 851 high quality images and a table gathering stomach contents recognized from 560 salamanders. This dataset ofers the opportunity to analyse phenotypic traits and stomach contents of eight populations belonging to two Speleomantes species. Furthermore, the data collection performed over diferent periods allows to expand the potential analyses through a wide temporal scale, allowing long-term studies. Background & Summary European cave salamanders are a group of eight amphibians endemic to Italy and to a small part of the French Provence1, all belonging to the genus Speleomantes1 (formerly considered Hydromantes). Tree species (S. strinatii, S. ambrosii and S. italicus) are distributed along the Northern and Central Apennines (only S. strinatii naturally extends its range also in France), while the other fve (S. favus, S. supramontis, S. imperialis, S. sarrabusensis and S. genei) are endemic to Sardinia1. -

The last species list of the European herpetofauna was published by Speybroeck, Beukema and Crochet (2010). In the meantime, ongoing research led to numerous taxonomic changes, including the discovery of new species-level lineages as well as reclassifications at genus level, requiring significant changes to this list. As of 2019, a new Taxonomic Committee was established as an official entity within the European Herpetological Society, Societas Europaea Herpetologica (SEH). Twelve members from nine European countries reviewed, discussed and voted on recent taxonomic research on a case-by-case basis. Accepted changes led to critical compilation of a new species list, which is hereby presented and discussed. According to our list, 301 species (95 amphibians, 15 chelonians, including six species of sea turtles, and 191 squamates) occur within our expanded geographical definition of Europe.
