On one occasion the Blessed One was living in the Kuru country at a town of the Kurus named Kammasadhamma. There he addressed the monks thus: 'Monks.' 'Venerable sir,' they replied. The Blessed One said this: DEFINITION 'Monks, this is the direct path for the purifcation of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the disappearance of dukkha and discontent, for acquiring the true method for the realization of Nibbana, namely, the four satipatthanas. 'What are the four? Here, monks, in regard to the body a monk abides contemplating the body, diligent, clearly knowing, and mindful, free from desires and discontent in regard to the world. In regard to feelings one abides contemplating feelings, diligent, clearly knowing, and mindful, free from desires and discontent in regard to the world. In regard to the mind one abides contemplating the mind, diligent, clearly knowing, and mindful, free from desires and discontent in regard to the world. In regard to dhammas one abides contemplating dhammas, diligent, clearly knowing, and mindful, free from desires and discontent in regard to the world. 1 / 15 / The Satipatthana + Anapanasati Suttas 1 / THE BODY BREATHING 'And how, monks, does one in regard to the body abide contemplating the body? Here, gone to the forest, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, one sits down; having folded one's legs crosswise, set one's body erect, and established mindfulness in front of him, mindful one breathes in, mindful one breathes out. 'Breathing in long, one knows ‘I breathe in long,’ breathing out long, one knows ‘I breathe out long.’ Breathing in short, one knows ‘I breathe in short,’ breathing out short, one knows ‘I breathe out short.’ One trains thus: ‘I shall breathe in experiencing the whole body,’ one trains thus: ‘I shall breathe out experiencing the whole body.’ One trains thus: ‘I shall breathe in calming the bodily formation,’ one trains thus: ‘I shall breathe out calming the bodily formation.’ 'Just as a skilled turner or his apprentice, when making a long turn, knows ‘I make a long turn,’ or when making a short turn knows ‘I make a short turn’ so too, breathing in long, one knows ‘I breathe in long,’... (continue as above). REFRAIN 'In this way, in regard to the body one abides contemplating the body internally, or one abides contemplating the body externally, or one abides contemplating the body both internally and externally. Or, one abides contemplating the nature of arising in the body, or one abides contemplating the nature of passing away in the body, or one abides contemplating the nature of both arising and passing away in the body. 'That is how in regard to the body one abides contemplating the body. 2 / 15 / The Satipatthana + Anapanasati Suttas POSTURES 'Again, monks, when walking, one knows ‘I am walking’; when standing, one knows ‘I am standing’; when sitting, one knows ‘I am sitting’; when lying down, one knows ‘I am lying down’; or one knows accordingly however one's body is disposed. REFRAIN 'In this way, in regard to the body one abides contemplating the body internally, or one abides contemplating the body externally, or one abides contemplating the body both internally and externally. Or, one abides contemplating the nature of arising in the body, or one abides contemplating the nature of passing away in the body, or one abides contemplating the nature of both arising and passing away in the body. Or, mindfulness that ‘there is a body’ is established in him to the extent necessary for bare knowledge and continuous mindfulness. And one abides independent, not clinging to anything in the world. 'That, too, is how in regard to the body one abides contemplating the body. ACTIVITIES 'Again, monks, when going forward and returning one acts clearly knowing; when looking ahead and looking away one acts clearly knowing; when fexing and extending one's limbs one acts clearly knowing; when wearing one's robes and carrying one's outer robe and bowl one acts clearly knowing; when eating, drinking, consuming food, and tasting one acts clearly knowing; when defecating and urinating one acts clearly knowing; when walking, standing, sitting, falling asleep, waking up, talking, and keeping silent one acts clearly knowing. REFRAIN 'In this way, in regard to the body one abides contemplating the body internally, or one abides contemplating the body externally, or one abides contemplating the body both internally and externally. or, one abides contemplating the nature of arising in the body, or one abides contemplating the nature of passing away in the body, or one abides contemplating the nature of both arising and passing away in the body. or, mindfulness that ‘there is a body’ is established in him to the extent necessary for bare knowledge and continuous mindfulness. 'That too is how in regard to the body one abides contemplating the body. 3 / 15 / The Satipatthana + Anapanasati Suttas ANATOMICAL PARTS 'Again, monks, one reviews this same body up from the soles of the feet and down from the top of the hair, enclosed by skin, as full of many kinds of impurity thus: ‘in this body there are head-hairs, body-hairs, nails, teeth, skin, fesh, sinews, bones, bone-marrow, kidneys, heart, liver, diaphragm, spleen, lungs, bowels, mesentery, contents of the stomach, faeces, bile, phlegm, pus, blood, sweat, fat, tears, grease, spittle, snot, oil of the joints, and urine.’ 'Just as though there were a bag with an opening at both ends full of many sorts of grain, such as hill rice, red rice, beans, peas, millet, and white rice, and a man with good eyes were to open it and review it thus: ‘this is hill rice, this is red rice, these are beans, these are peas, this is millet, this is white rice’; so too one reviews this same body.... (continue as above). REFRAIN 'In this way, in regard to the body one abides contemplating the body internally ... externally ... both internally and externally. One abides contemplating the nature of arising ... of passing away ... of both arising and passing away in the body. Mindfulness that ‘there is a body’ is established in him to the extent necessary for bare knowledge and continuous mindfulness. And one abides independent, not clinging to anything in the world. That too is how in regard to the body one abides contemplating the body. ELEMENTS 'Again, monks, one reviews this same body, however it is placed, however disposed, as consisting of elements thus: ‘ in this body there are the earth element, the water element, the fre element, and the air element’. 'Just as though a skilled butcher or his apprentice had killed a cow and was seated at a crossroads with it cut up into pieces; so too one reviews this same body.... (continue as above). REFRAIN 'In this way, in regard to the body one abides contemplating the body internally ... externally ... both internally and externally. One abides contemplating the nature of arising ... of passing away ... of both arising and passing away in the body. Mindfulness that ‘there is a body’ is established in him to the extent necessary for bare knowledge and continuous mindfulness. And one abides independent, not clinging to anything in the world. That too is how in regard to the body one abides contemplating the body. 4 / 15 / The Satipatthana + Anapanasati Suttas CORPSE IN DECAY 'Again, monks, as though one were to see a corpse thrown aside in a charnel ground – one, two, or three days dead, bloated, livid, and oozing matter ... being devoured by crows, hawks, vultures, dogs, jackals, or various kinds of worms ... a skeleton with fesh and blood, held together with sinews ... a feshless skeleton smeared with blood, held together with sinews ... a skeleton without fesh and blood, held together with sinews ... disconnected bones scattered in all directions ... bones bleached white, the colour of shells ... bones heaped up, more than a year old ... bones rotten and crumbling to dust – one compares this same body with it thus: ‘this body too is of the same nature, it will be like that, it is not exempt from that fate.’ REFRAIN 'In this way, in regard to the body one abides contemplating the body internally ... externally ... both internally and externally. One abides contemplating the nature of arising ... of passing away ... of both arising and passing away in the body. Mindfulness that ‘there is a body’ is established in him to the extent necessary for bare knowledge and continuous mindfulness. And one abides independent, not clinging to anything in the world. 'Here, when feeling a pleasant feeling, one knows ‘I feel a pleasant feeling’; when feeling an unpleasant feeling, one knows ‘I feel an unpleasant feeling’; when feeling a neutral feeling, one knows ‘I feel a neutral feeling.’ 'When feeling a worldly pleasant feeling, one knows ‘I feel a worldly pleasant feeling’; when feeling an unworldly pleasant feeling, one knows ‘I feel an unworldly pleasant feeling’; when feeling a worldly unpleasant feeling, one knows ‘I feel a worldly unpleasant feeling’; when feeling an unworldly unpleasant feeling, one knows ‘I feel an unworldly unpleasant feeling’; when feeling a worldly neutral feeling, one knows ‘I feel a worldly neutral feeling’; when feeling an unworldly neutral feeling, one knows ‘I feel an unworldly neutral feeling.’ REFRAIN 'In this way, in regard to feelings one abides contemplating feelings internally ..

Inspired by the personal benefits, he de- veloped a strong intention to share these skills with those who would not normally attend retreats or wish to practice meditation. Kabat-Zinn developed and began con- ducting mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) in 1979. Kabat-Zinn (1990) deliberately detached the language and practice of mind- fulness from its Buddhist origins so that it would be more readily acceptable in Western health settings (Kabat-Zinn 1990). Despite a lack of consensus about the finer details (Singh et al. 2008), Kabat-Zinn’s operational definition of mindfulness remains possibly the most referred to in the field. Dozens of empirically validated mindfulness-based programs have emerged in the past three decades. It is not all that difficult to deconstruct such ancient, heavily edited texts as the Buddhist scriptures. There are abundant fault-lines, anomalies, and obscurities if one wishes to look. But what are we to do—demolish the palace and leave just a pile of rubble? This too is not authentic to the texts, for the undeniable fact is that, despite everything, the Nikyas/Āgamas offer us a vast body of teachings springing from a remarkably uniform vision, a clarity and harmony of perspective that I think is unparalleled in any comparably large and ancient body of writings. To convey the impression that the situation is hopelessly confused and problematic is to deny acknowledgement of the extraordinary fact that we have the texts at all. Somehow, the group of men and women that made up the ancient Buddhist Sangha managed to organize themselves to produce and maintain a magnificent spiritual literature for 2500 years. While denial that there are problems is naïve and no longer tenable, throwing our hands up in the air in despair shows an excess of what the Satipahna Sutta calls “spiritual depression” (nirâmisa domanassa). I think the lines of unity and consistency in satipatthana1 are far more significant and powerful than the fractures.

    The Applicability of James’ Model of the Self to the Western Buddhist Experience of Self-transformation Glenys Eddy University of Sydney Abstract Studies of religious conversion in recent decades, which have highlighted the role played by the participant’s recognition of personal transformation in the process of religious change, generally theorize such self-transformation as identity change. Models based on this equation are found to be inadequate for explaining the transformative action of Buddhist meditation practice which leads to commitment to Buddhism for many practitioners. Alternatively, some explanatory power is provided by James's model of the self as two discriminated aspects, the self-as- subject and self-as-object, outlined in his Principles of Psychology. This paper discusses the model’s applicability to data obtained from fieldwork conducted between 2003 and 2005, at two Western Buddhist centres in New South Wales, Australia: the Blue Mountains Insight Meditation Centre, and Vajrayana Institute. It outlines the nature of personal change experienced by the practitioners of both groups, through the practice of concentration and analytical meditation techniques, and the application of the corresponding models of the self as interpretive frameworks for experience. This paper examines the applicability of James's model of the self as two discriminated aspects, the self-as-subject and self-as-object (James 1948: 176; Barresi 2002: 237), to the analysis of self-transformation experiences of Buddhist practitioners from two Western Buddhist centres in the Sydney area of NSW, Australia. The data utilized in this analysis was obtained from fieldwork conducted at the Theravadin Blue Mountains Insight Meditation Centre, and the Gelugpa Tibetan Vajrayana Institute, between 2003 and 2005.1 Fieldwork consisted of participant observation—participation in and engagement with the activities of both centres—and conducting semi-structured interviews, typically an hour and a half in duration.

In the Icchā,nagala Sutta (S 54.11), breath meditation is declared to be ―the noble abode, the perfect abode, the Tathagata‘s abode,‖1 because during the rains-retreat, the Buddha ―most- ly dwells in the concentration by mindfulness of breathing.‖2 The chief text of ―the mindfulness of in-and- out breathing‖ (nâpna,sati) is of course the Ānâpāna,sati Sutta (the discourse on the mindfulness of the in-and-out-breathing) found in the Majjhima Nikya (M 118/3:77-88). There are also four brief versions of the breath meditation (S 54.13-16) [1.2]. The Madhyama Āgama of the Sarvâstivda does not have any such sutta, but there is an isolated text in the Chinese Madhyama Āgama.3 The Pli Ānâpāna,sati Sutta is an exposition of the 16 steps of breath meditation in four tetrads [§§15-22] and the relationship of tetrads to the four focuses of mindfulness [§§23-28], the seven awakening-factors [§§29-40] and spiritual liberation [§§41-43]. The sixteen steps are found as a separate set in the Sarvâstivda Madhyama and Sayukta.4 The inspiring sutta prologue takes up about a quarter of the unabridged sutta. The Buddha has just completed the three-month rains retreat with various prominent elder monks who have been exhorting and instructing new monks (§§1-4).

Michael Stausberg notes the growth in the international spiritual retreat business since the 1980s, 2 and lists the visitation of retreats as one of the common purposes of religious tourism,3 itself one of the various forms of contemporary spiritual life that are a result of the increased leisure time available to us in our modern life. 4 Meditation retreats, by their style of presentation and advertisement, may resemble other forms of religious travel. Websites of some Buddhist retreat centres have the facility where the enquirer can download the retreat schedule, whilst others have web pages that advertise forthcoming retreats, almost in the manner of a catalogue from which to browse the types of retreat on offer. 5 Some even have testimonials to the efficacy of particular retreats, seen, for instance, in the Finding Freedom in the Body: Mindfulness of the Body as a Gateway to Liberation retreat, held recently between 10 and 15 April 2012, 6 and advertised on the website of the Spirit Rock Meditation Centre.     Anapanasati Sutta – Student Notes – 1 Anapanasati Sutta Student Notes: Session One 1. “Anapana” means “in-breath and out-breath” “Sati” means “mindfulness” or present moment awareness that simply notices what is happening without in any way interfering, without adding or subtracting anything to or from the experience. It’s bare awareness. So, anapanasati means “mindfulness while breathing in and out”. 2. Background to the sutta: It’s the end of the rainy-season retreat, and the Buddha is so pleased with the meditation practice of those gathered with him, that he announces he is going to stay on another month, the month of the white water-lily or white lotus moon. At the end of that month he gives this teaching on anapanasati, giving the teaching under the full moon at night. The Buddha says: “Mindfulness of in-and-out breathing, when developed and pursued, is of great benefit. Mindfulness of in-and-out breathing, when developed and pursued, brings the four foundations of mindfulness to perfection. The four foundations of mindfulness, when developed and pursued, bring the seven factors of awakening to their culmination. The seven factors of awakening, when developed and pursued, perfect clear insight and liberation.” In other words, anapanasati can lead to enlightenment. Four foundations of mindfulness (satipatthana) are: • Kaya (Body) • Vedana (Feelings or experiencing sensations as pleasant, unpleasant or neutral) • Citta (Mind or mental formations, thoughts and emotions) • Dhammas (mental objects, or perspectives on experience used to investigate reality) These four categories correspond to the four sets of contemplations in the anapanasati method. The hype is not entirely new, however. For decades, ostensibly Buddhist ideas have been tossed around in the West as recipes for success in just about any art or craft. But what hides behind this craze? Can Buddhist teachings offer us tools with which to achieve our goals, or are we corrupting Buddhism by applying it in such a way? What have artists and practitioners thought of the use of meditative tools, and how have they integrated Buddhist terms like “bare awareness” and “emptiness” into their work? In order to answer such questions, we will start the course with a reading of the Satipatṭhāna Sutta, the Buddha’s instructions on mindfulness mediation. A close reading the text in our first unit will give us a glimpse of the ancient Buddhist practice, its complexity and richness. As we move into our second unit, we will read the text that first gave the West the idea that Buddhism can allow us to “hit the mark” without trying to do so, Eugen Herrigel’s bestselling 1948 book, Zen in the Art of Archery. Using Edward Said’s classic work, Orientalism, we will ask if Herrigel was romanticizing Zen Buddhism, and if he was, what the consequences of such a romanticization have for Japan and the West.
