UTV Signs up with Anurag Kashyap ~ Signs an Exclusive Deal with the Talented Story Teller for 9 Films Over the Next 3 Years ~ UTV signs up with Anurag Kashyap ~ Signs an exclusive deal with the talented story teller for 9 films over the next 3 years ~ 14th October, Mumbai: UTV today announced an exclusive association with Anurag Kashyap, for the next 3 years. As a part of the deal signed, Anurag Kashyap will be directing 4 to 5 movies produced by UTV, and creatively producing another 4 to 5 in this duration. Vikas Bahl, CCO, UTV Motion Pictures said, “Anurag Kashyap is an extremely talented director, with a unique vision for his projects. There is a clear connect between how we want each of our films to be exceptional and diverse in various aspects and how Anurag treats each of his projects. Dev.D, a UTV Spotboy movie directed by Anurag, was a blockbuster and set the base for a phenomenal working relationship. Now, we want to take this association forward with a long term perspective, and that is exactly how this idea came about.” Anurag Kashyap said, “I am very happy to sign up with UTV because it gives me the freedom to make the kind of films I want to and I feel UTV supports as well as enhances my creative process. Not only do I enjoy directing for UTV but I also appreciate the support they give to films and film-makers in delivering a creative vision that the films demand. Making Dev.D was one of the most satisfying experiences and the production and distribution support that I got from UTV was the best I ever had. A repeat of that is always welcome.” The first UTV Spotboy film directed by Anurag Kashyap was Dev.D, a modern take on Devdas, the novel written by Sarat Chandra. The movie broke all the typecasts of the original novel including it‘s principal characters. Dev.D, in essence, is the tale of a man who goes into self destruction but the circumstances and the characters he meets are the people we meet and know, and are of this generation. The film has been screened at various reputed international film festivals. • UTV Acquires the Feature Film Rights of Ashwin Sanghi's
UTV acquires the Feature Film rights of Ashwin Sanghi’s ‘Chanakya’s Chant’ ~ A film based on the #1 National Bestseller to go on floors soon ~ Mumbai, Wednesday, June 15th, 2011: UTV Motion Pictures has acquired rights to Ashwin Sanghi’s national bestseller - Chanakya’s Chant, published by Westland. The interesting fast-paced story based on politics in two radically different eras will now be adapted into a film by the studio. Chanakya's Chant, a historical political thriller, released by Westland in January 2011, shot into the Top-5 Bestsellers of India within 2 weeks of its launch, proving that Chanakya’s neetis are as relevant today as they were in ancient times. The book narrates two parallel political tales, one in Chanakya’s puranic Bharat 2300 years ago and the other in post-independence contemporary India. While the ancient story is largely historical, based upon Chanakya’s rise to power and the clever tactics applied by him towards installing Chandragupta Maurya on the throne, the modern story is mostly fictional and tells the tale of Kanpur’s Pandit Gangasagar Mishra who draws inspiration from the master strategist Chanakya and employs his strategies in a modern context to get his protégée Chandini Gupta appointed to the highest office in India. On announcing the film, Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO, UTV Motion Pictures, said "Chanakya’s Chant is one of those rare books with a storyline that has the potential to be translated into a superbly cinematic and immensely entertaining screenplay. The tale is about the underbelly of national politics which the book superbly exposes, where strategies developed by Chanakya 2300 years ago are still as valid in the modern day political scenario.

Film industry was one of the biggest lobbying groups behind the new DRM provisions in India, and the industry has been consistently trying to portray online piracy as a major threat. The Indian film industry also extensively uses John Doe orders from the high courts in India to prevent the access of Internet users to websites suspected to be hosting pirated material. This paper explores two questions in the context of the new DRM provisions in India: ( 1) Is online piracy a threat to the Indian film industry? and (2) Are the present measures taken by the film industry the optimal measures for addressing the issue of online piracy? Hindu-Muslim Relationship in Bollywood in post 26/11: A Content Analysis of Movies (2008-2018) Maziar Mozaffari Falarti,1 Hamideh Molaei,2 Asra Karim3 1. A. in Indian Studies, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran ([email protected]) (Received: Jan. 2, 2019 Revised: Feb. 28, 2019 Accepted: Ma r. 28, 2019) Abstract This study investigates the representations of Hindu-Muslim relationship in Bollywood movies from 2008 to 2018. It is assumed that after 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which are known as 26/11, conflicts between Hindus and Muslims have escalated. Since Indian people are extreme fans of movies, especially Bollywood movies, in this regard, it is expected that media could play a significant role in increasing or alleviating the conflicts by influencing people’s attitudes and opinions. This research seeks to examine the extent and modality of the representation of Hindu-Muslim relationships in Bollywood after the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The study was conducted through a content analysis of 11 Bollywood movies, which were selected from 70 Muslim-characters-based movies. Favorable, unfavorable, neutral and unclear were the four factors through which the movies’ contents were analyzed. The overall analysis of these factors indicate that 66.17% of the scenes were favorable, 14.70% were unfavorable, 2.94% were neutral, and 16.17% presented unclear images of Hindu-Muslim relationship in Bollywood movies.

Bollywood Shakespeares from Gulzar to Bhardwaj: Adapting, Assimilating and Culturalizing the Bard Koel Chatterjee PhD Thesis 10 October, 2017 I, Koel Chatterjee, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar.
