SHIRLEY Directed by: Josephine Decker Written by: Sarah Gubbins Starring: Elisabeth Moss, Odessa Young, Michael Stuhlbarg, Logan Lerman Running Time: 107 Minutes CORNERSTONE FILMS CONTACTS: Publicity: Anna Bohlin/ [email protected] Marketing: Joanne Michael/ [email protected] SYNPOSIS Fred and Rose move to a small Vermont college town in pursuit of a job for Fred as an assistant professor of literature. The young couple receives an offer for free room and board from professor Stanley Hyman, as long as Rose agrees to spend time cleaning up the home and looking after his wife, acclaimed horror author Shirley Jackson. At first Fred and Rose detest the rocky household of the eccentric couple, but they eventually establish deep bonds with their counterparts, which will test the limits of their young love. Director Josephine Decker makes an exciting return with a biographical portrait brought alive with energy and imagination, based on a novel by Susan Merrill and screenplay by Sarah Gubbins. Shirley is a fresh take on the period drama, full of contemporary intrigue and dynamic in style. It features a stellar lead cast—Elisabeth Moss, Michael Stuhlbarg, Odessa Young, and Logan Lerman—who all return to the Festival to give another memorable performance. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Shirley Jackson was a wildly unorthodox human and storyteller. Encountering her work was like finding a map towards becoming the kind of artist I would like to be. Daring. Intimate. Structured yet dreamlike. Shirley’s work rides on the skin between imagined and real, seducing with its oddness and humble cracks until you can’t tell if you’re looking up the stairwell or into your own mouth.

through FILMS 70 years of European History through films is a product in Erasmus+ project „70 years of European History 1945-2015”. It was prepared by the teachers and students involved in the project – from: Greece, Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey. It’ll be a teaching aid and the source of information about the recent European history. A DANGEROUS METHOD (2011) Director: David Cronenberg Writers: Christopher Hampton, Christopher Hampton Stars: Michael Fassbender, Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen Country: UK | GE | Canada | CH Genres: Biography | Drama | Romance | Thriller Trailer In the early twentieth century, Zurich-based Carl Jung is a follower in the new theories of psychoanalysis of Vienna-based Sigmund Freud, who states that all psychological problems are rooted in sex. Jung uses those theories for the first time as part of his treatment of Sabina Spielrein, a young Russian woman bro- ught to his care. She is obviously troubled despite her assertions that she is not crazy. Jung is able to uncover the reasons for Sa- bina’s psychological problems, she who is an aspiring physician herself. In this latter role, Jung employs her to work in his own research, which often includes him and his wife Emma as test subjects. Jung is eventually able to meet Freud himself, they, ba- sed on their enthusiasm, who develop a friendship driven by the- ir lengthy philosophical discussions on psychoanalysis. Actions by Jung based on his discussions with another patient, a fellow psychoanalyst named Otto Gross, lead to fundamental chan- ges in Jung’s relationships with Freud, Sabina and Emma.

  • Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's Adapted Screenplays
Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone.

Stoppard, his mother, and his older brother were evacuated to India shortly before the Japanese invasion of Singapore in 1941; his father, Eugene Straussler, remained behind and was killed. In 1946, Stoppard's mother, Martha, married British army officer Kenneth Stoppard and the family moved to England, eventually settling in Bristol. Stoppard left school at the age of seventeen and began working as a journalist, first with the Western Daily Press (1954-58) and then with the Bristol Evening World (1958-60).

  • Programming; Providing an Environment for the Growth and Education of Theatre Professionals, Audiences And, the Community at Large
AUGUST 2014 WELCOME It’s an intergenerational summer here at The Old Globe. Across the plaza in the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, we are producing one of Shakespeare’s first plays, if not his very first: The Two Gentlemen of Verona, a piece about young men, adolescent love, and the dawning of adulthood. Here in the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, on the stage of the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, we explore a different phase of life, as the four characters in Ronald Harwood’s Quartet come to terms with life, love, and friendship after retirement. DOUG GATES Managing Director Michael G. Murphy and Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. To explore those rich themes in Quartet, we reap the great benefit of four performers with decades of experience to their credit. Robert Foxworth, of course, is a beloved Associate Artist of The Old Globe, last seen here in Other Desert Cities. He is joined by the acclaimed Elizabeth Franz, at long last making her Globe debut, as is seasoned Shakespearean Roger Forbes. The final member of the play’s quartet, Jill Tanner, returns to the Globe after a 30-year absence. And who better to lead such a team of actors than our own Richard Seer? Rick’s deft hand at comedy, his skill at staging in the round, and his ability to bring out the heart of a piece are all on ample display here. ThisQuartet , and you, our audiences, are in excellent hands. Barry Edelstein, Artistic Director Michael G. Murphy, Managing Director MISSION STATEMENT The mission of The Old Globe is to preserve, strengthen, and advance American theatre by: creating theatrical experiences of the highest professional standards; producing and presenting works of exceptional merit, designed to reach current and future audiences; ensuring diversity and balance in programming; providing an environment for the growth and education of theatre professionals, audiences and, the community at large.

  • SARP Data~Sep 2018
1 Screenwriting Research Network www.screenwritingresearch.com Screenwriting Archives and Resources Project (SARP) A worldwide statement of screenwriting resources. September 2018 © SRN 2018 Coordination: Ian W. Macdonald [email protected] 1 2 Introduction The Screenwriting Archives and Resources Project (SARP) is an initiative of the Executive Council of the Screenwriting Research Network (SRN). The SRN is a group of scholars worldwide whose research focuses on the genesis, generation and development of screen ideas, i.e. those intended to become moving image productions, whether fiction, fact or entertainment, in any medium (e.g. film, TV, interactive etc.). More information can be found on the SRN website at www.screenwritingresearch.com. Scholars of screenwriting have, until the 2000s, tended to work in isolation from like- minded others, often in academic environments where screenwriting is seen as a specialism in the industrial sense, of some interest within the broad study of Film, or Creative Industries and other sub-fields of Media, Media Practice, Communication and Cultural Studies. Screenwriting scholars have now come together to focus on the practices, processes, discourse, industry and cultural meanings of developing screen ideas; and in following these interests, we have discovered that the collection and preservation of textual material (including scripts, screenplays etc.) has been badly neglected by both academics and archivists, with a few honourable exceptions. This database is intended to draw together information on the collections that do exist, providing us with a greater awareness of what’s available, and therefore also – sadly – what is not. This document is compiled from a basic questionnaire available to anyone, whether scholar, practitioner, archivist or enthusiast.
