In her autobiography she wrote, “In 1920 I collected the various pupils I had into a class and began teaching professionally.” This was the beginning of Rambert School which, in these early days, was based at Notting Hill Gate. Out of it grew Rambert Dance Company. -

Photo: Steve Tanner WELCOME 2016 – a momentous year – in which the world celebrated the richness of Shakespeare’s legacy 400 years after his death. Shakespeare’s Globe is proud to have played a part in those celebrations in 197 countries and led the festivities in London, where Shakespeare wrote and worked. Our Globe to Globe Hamlet tour travelled 193,000 miles before coming home for a final emotional performance in the Globe to mark the end, not just of this phenomenal worldwide journey, but the artistic handover from Dominic Dromgoole to Emma Rice. A memorable season of late Shakespeare plays in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and two outstanding Globe transfers in the West End ran concurrently with the last leg of the Globe to Globe Hamlet tour. On Shakespeare’s birthday, 23 April, we welcomed President Obama to the Globe. Actors performed scenes from the late plays running in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Southwark Cathedral, a service which was the only major civic event to mark the anniversary in London and was attended by our Patron, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. -

2016 // 17 SEASON Northrop Presents CANADA'S ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET Thu, Oct 20, 7:30 pm Carlson Family Stage DRACULA Dear Northrop Dance Lovers, Northrop at the University of Minnesota Presents It’s great to welcome Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet back to Northrop! We presented their WONDERLAND at the Orpheum in 2011, but they last appeared on this stage in 2009 with their sensational Moulin Rouge. Northrop was a CANADA'S ROYAL very different venue then, and the dancers are delighting in the transformation of this historic space. The work that Royal Winnipeg brings us tonight boasts WINNIPEG BALLET quite a history as well. When it first came out in 1897, Bram th Stoker’s novel was popular enough, but it was the early 20 Under the distinguished Patronage of His Excellency century film versions that really caused its popularity to The Right Honourable David Johnston, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D. skyrocket. American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancers Isabella Boylston, Misty Copeland and Devon Teuscher will join choreographer Cathy Marston for a conversation on her full-length ballet Jane Eyre. Boylston, Copeland and Teuscher will dance the title role in Marston’s ballet during ABT’s Spring season at the Metropolitan Opera House. The discussion, moderated by Elda Rotor, Vice President and Publisher for Penguin Classics, will take place at the 92nd Street Y on Friday, May 3, 2019 at 8:00 P.M. Tickets for the event, starting at $35, are available online at https://www.92y.org/event/jane-eyre. The American Premiere of the full-length Jane Eyre, set for Tuesday, June 4, features choreography and direction by Marston, music compiled and composed by Philip Feeney, scenery and costumes by Patrick Kinmonth and lighting by Brad Fields. The production received its World Premiere by Northern Ballet on May 19, 2016 in Doncaster, England. Jane Eyre is a co-production with Joffrey Ballet and is staged for ABT by Jenny Tattersall and Daniel de Andrade. Following the June 4 Company Premiere, the ballet will be given seven performances by ABT through Monday, June 10. Tickets for American Ballet Theatre’s 2019 Metropolitan Opera House season, beginning at $25, are available online, at the Met box office or by phone at 212-362-6000. John Neumeier
JOHN NEUMEIER John Neumeier was born in 1942 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, where he also received his first dance training. He went on to study ballet both in Copenhagen and at the Royal Ballet School in London. He acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and Theater Studies from Marquette University, Wisconsin, where he created his first choreographic works. In 1963 John Cranko engaged him at the Stuttgart Ballet, where he progressed to solo dancer. In 1969 Ulrich Erfurth appointed Neumeier as Director of Ballet in Frankfurt. Since 1973 John Neumeier has been Artistic Director and Chief Choreographer of THE HAMBURG BALLET, since 1996 Ballettintendant (General Director). THE HAMBURG BALLET has become one of the leading ballet companies in the German dance scene and soon received international recognition. As a choreographer, Neumeier has continually focused on the preservation of ballet tradition, while giving his works a modern dramatic framework. His commitment to this end has manifested itself particularly in his revised versions of the classical “story ballets”. For his revolutionary choreographies on symphonies by Gustav Mahler he has received particular acclaim throughout the world. His latest creations for THE HAMBURG BALLET, Le Pavillon d’Armide and Orpheus, premiered in 2009, and Purgatorio, premiered in 2011. In 1975, Neumeier created the Hamburger Ballett-Tage, the Hamburg Ballet Festival, a climax and end to each season. In 1978 he founded The School of THE HAMBURG BALLET. In 1989 the school, together with the company, moved into its own Ballettzentrum (ballet center) provided by the city of Hamburg. Its facilities include nine studios and a boarding school for over thirty students. -
