Media support for the 13/14 Jazz Series provided by WRTI and City Paper. 10 | ABOUT THE ARTISTS Gary Burton (Vibraphone) Born in 1943 and raised in Indiana, Gary Burton taught himself to play the vibraphone. At the age of 17, Burton made his recording debut in Nashville with guitarists Hank Garland and Chet Atkins. Two years later, Burton left his studies at Berklee College of Music to join George Shearing and Stan Getz, with whom he worked from 1964 to 1966. As a member of Getz's quartet, Burton won Down Beat Magazine's “Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition” award in 1965. By the time he left Getz to form his own quartet in 1967, Burton had recorded three solo albums. Borrowing rhythms and sonorities from rock music, while maintaining jazz's emphasis on improvisation and harmonic complexity, Burton's first quartet attracted large audiences from both sides of the jazz-rock spectrum. Such albums as Duster and Lofty Fake Anagram established Burton and his band as progenitors of the jazz fusion phenomenon.

It refers to the process of reinterpreting, reviving and rebooting songs of the past with the energy and ideas of the present. When saxophonist -composer Joshua Redman decided to perform the music of the legendary ensemble Old and New Dreams he was upholding this culture, but there was also a compellingly personal subtext to the project. The quartet, active between the late 70s and late 80s, was jointly led by his father, saxophonist Dewey, trumpeter Don Cherry, double bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Ed Blackwell. All of the above played with Ornette Coleman, a visionary who ushered in daring new approaches to composition and improvisation. Redman, who actually played with Dewey, as well as Haden and other Coleman alumni, Billy Higgins and Pat Metheny, in the early 90s, was moved to launch his Old and New Dreams project four years ago following Haden’s death. ‘There was a memorial [for him] in January 2015 at Town Hall in New York that I was a part of,’ Redman explains. ‘I found myself, immediately after, listening to his music and a lot of music my father was a part of.

After Thad Jones left the band, Perry continued playing with Mel Lewis, Old Dominion University recording three LP’s with him, including "Live in Montreux", and "Naturally". The band, Department of Music____________ with Perry as a key member, is now known as The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and continues to tour and record. Three of their recent CDs have been nominated for Grammy awards. Presents A highlight of Perry’s career has been his association with the gifted composer and Old Dominion University arranger Maria Schneider. Man kann die halbe Mannschaft auswechseln, und bleibt dennoch das SYLVIE COURVOISIER MARK FELDMAN QUARTET. Scott Colley am Bass und Billy Mintz an den Drums sind konfrontiert und dabei doch selber auch schon aktiv beteiligt an einem Programm, in dem jedes einzelne Teilstück die Kaleidoskopik des Ganzen wiederholt. Mise en abyme wohin man blickt. Birdies for Lulu (Intakt CD 230) im Allgemeinen und 'Cards for Captaine' im Besonderen sind einem verstorbenen Freund gewidmet, dem Schweizer Indologen Yves Ramseier (1956 - 2013). Der Duktus der Musik ist jedoch alles andere als elegisch, die Kapriolen häufen sich derart, dass ich da lieber von Capriccios sprechen möchte. Das 'Cards'-Stück mischt komponiertes und aleatorisches Material, verwirft einen Teil von Letzterem, um es studiomanipulativ doch wieder an passenderer Stelle einzufügen, oder als Coda anzuhängen. Es gibt nur eine Richtschnur, Spielwitz en gros und en detail. Feldman brilliert bei 'Cards' mit schillernden Bogenkratzern über einem animierten Puls, mit stenografierten Kürzeln, mit Flötentönchen am Steg, während Courvoisier von kristallinem Gesplitter zu Staubgewedel wechselt und dann von Slideeffekten zu debussyeskem Wellengekräusel und versonnenen, pizzikatobepickten Impressionen, bis ein Paukenschlag einen schnell ins Trockene schlüpfen lässt. 'Shmear' hetzt wie ein Hund hinterm Stöckchen her, kontrastiert mit einer Kürzesthymne, wetterwendischem Gegrummel und Courvoisiers röhrenglockig läutender Linker zu violinistischen Paganinismen, das sie mit merkurialem Geperle erwidert - bis plötzlich die getragene Hymnik wiederkehrt, während der Hund immer noch sein Stöckchen jagt. Danach kann man sich yogamäßig in 'Natarajasana' versenken, sich vom Piano besänftigen, von der Violine einspinnen, vom Bass die Chakras massieren lassen.
